Please, it's not a "Christian" thing at all... It's more of a cultural and personal thing.

I have attended Christian burials that were so low budget and simple in every way.

Most Nigerians just like to show off whether burial, weddings, birthdays, etc... No need dragging religion into this. The Christian Faith actually encourages and promotes moderation in all things.
