Dangote controls the major share of the market because he has invested the most (billions of $$) in building new plants and expanding existing ones. Where were you when he was building and expanding Obajana, Ibese, Benue. Where were you when the guy was investing billions in thousands of trailers for product movement? Why won't he have the dominant share when his cement is readily available in every state in Nigeria whereas the other cement firms are localized by region.

So your argument is that because he invested all these billions and others did not, so that's a right to control a huge market share? Someone please correct me if am wrong, did Dangote invest "HIS" own billion or borrowed / financed billions of other people? As we know, financing is a serious barrier to competition.

I support the move, but it is not his business. He should plead with them to cut down the prices not ordering them to do so. Why is he not even complaining or bordered about the cost of diesel and kerosene?

God help us. this president is obviously a clueless eedeot! ok, so if decrees work that well and the fundamentals of the economy just shifts because decrees are issued, why and how come he hasn't decreed electricity and good roads to be!

i mean, this eedeots utterances just keep jeopardising the dynamics of the Nigerian economy! how can strategist adequately plan to recoup investments if they will be scared the president will decree tomorrow that bread and 7up be distributed free to all almajiris in the North?

J12, are you smart or just pretending to be dense? did you just say he should plead with them to crash prices? did he plead with Citibank and the consortium of banks who loaned him money to put up his cement factories or have you heard Obama pleading with Google or Dell or Wall mart to reduce its prices on its goods? i somewhat believe you are responding from some backside of Ogidi local government. you are absolutely clueless

If sir Jonathan will liberalise the importation of cement, the price will crash in 6months to N1,200 per bag.
The Government knows what to do,but they have failed to do it because of the influence of the stakeholders( Monopolists)
If the government can liberalise the importation of cars in the auto industry, they can as well do same in the cement /construction industry.
Our government know what to do to help the masses, but they are more interested in pleasing the rich and not the poor masses that cannot afford to build a home due to high cost of materials. which civil servant in Nigerian can afford to buy cement at this present rate of N2,000.
If people cannot afford to buy what they need with their salary they, thy have no choice than to resort to accepting bribes and kickbacks to supplement their income.

ok, so after he liberalizes the cement industry, your father-in-law will then provide for all the employees who will loose their jobs because excess capacity will breed serious low prices and our dear companies will then need to lay off people ya, then the cycle of crime spikes and pple like you will come on this board to yak about higher crime rates in the country! apply just a little bit of sense and stop making comments like some drugged out communist

There was no Ibo at the meeting?

Dont we have Ibo cement manufacturers?

GEJ must not have extended invites to fake cement manufactures. . . Maybe!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA! NICE 1!
Re: Jonathan Directs Dangote, Others To Crash Cement Prices Within 30 Days by dasa: 7:31am On May 18, 2011
the changes that occured do no warant a N900 increase in cement price.

Jonathan knows the manufacturers ganged up against the consumers. They used the diistraction of the govenment during the elections to make a few billions.

If GEJ approves cement imports they'll be out of business. They better sit up.

And govt. Play ur role, power, security and infrastructure.

People talking about monopoly in Nigeria's cement industry are ignorant. Where is the monoply when cement makers in Nigeria are Lafarge Wapco, Ashaka, Unicem, Cement Company of Northern Nigeria, Dangote and rebaggers are Ibeto, Flour Mills, Eagle Cement and BUA cement. So where is the monopoly? How can an industry with 9 players be a monopoly?

What stops anyone from setting their own cement plant and selling at N500 so as to crash prices? We want to travel all the way to china to import dust when the raw materials to make that dust are abundant in our own backyard.

Hmmm, it seems I need to question a little bit of your own knowledge. What you have only done is look at things superficially by listing the different cement 'manufacturers' in Nigeria. This might seem to point to the lack of monopoly, however a more than cursory look at this companies would reveal the following as the ACTUAL owners of these companies:

Lafarge - Dangote; Ashaka - Dangote; UniCem - Dangote; Eagle Cement - Dangote; Ibeto - - Dangote; BUA Cement - Dangote; Cement Company of Nothern Nigeria (former BCC) - Dangote

Now, do you see the monopoly? That this brands continue to exist by their different names is only to mask the true identity. You can google to read up on how Dangote acquired Eagle Cement and the part government agencies played to facilitate it.

Nonsense, the boom to the construction industry from the consequent lower material costs will more than over-compensate for the losses to our indigenous cement manufacturers. There are many building projects that have ground to a halt, with resultant job losses, because of ever escalating building materials costs. The idea that Nigerians have to pay inflated costs just to protect a few local manufacturers is ridiculous.

If our manufacturers cannot compete here on price with foreign imports, it's better we import. We tried these import substitution policies before and they didn't work then and won't work now. All they do is create a few rent-seeking highly connected billionaires at the expense of the average Nigerian.

Personally, i don't think there are policies that control how many nos of trailer an individual money-bag can buy.
One questions that beg for an answer is ''has Dangote or his allies( as he said') ever paid the families of those who died as a result of brake failure of one of those trailers. May be someday i mean one day if such trailer ran into the convoy of a sitting senator, Governor, and their cronies, then such policy will be reviewed.

i don't see any solution in the purchase of another 5000 trailer by Dangote, but if such money can be pumped into d Nigerian railway line project, and dangote can partnered some of other money bag, to ensure a public-private partnership railway line, then NIGERIA WILL BE A BETTER PLACE AND OUR ROADS WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME

[i]Agreed. A reliable rail network is what we need to move goods and ensure sanity on our roads. Just last week it was a harrowing experience travelling from Lagos to Ilorin and back. Trailer accidents, roadside parking and their slow movement with little chance of you overtaking in a long while. Eventually slept over in Ibadan when we couldnt get to the toll gate by 9pm tho we arrived Ibadan at 6.45pm cos a trailer toppled over and blocked the road! Now to think of another 5000, are we making progress or dying off slowly? Better rail service is the choice anyday.

Government should not shy away from their responsibilities of providing adequate infrastructure. If the price of diesel can be allowed to be decided by market forces at a pump price of N160, also LPFO and gas then cement too should go the same way. The truth be told is that there is an inadequate road network in Nigeria and a non existent power supply.

After listening to Mr David Iweta on channels this morning I think there's something wrong with our policies if he's right. He claimed that cement cost N400 per bag in China and that the cost of frieght is abot N400. add 35% duties and levies and N300 for transportation and you get the cost. but his argument was that why should locally produced cement cost the same as imported cement when all these levies do not apply to locally produced cement? He also claimed that cement factories all over the world generate their own power because of the high power requirements and so power(PHCN) is not the issue cos you are not expected to rely on PHCN.

. . . . .its suprising however that when the rest of the world have graduated to using more environmentally friendly but durable materials to build houses we are still stuck with using an average of 1 ton of pure concrete on building which is apalling.
i fail to understand why we use concrete and blocks even for internal dividing walls in a hot climate

@ edoyad (m)The day when armed robbers visit you, you go know why .

@ edoyad whether you build your house with bricks, mortar, raw clay, cement, or concrete when real armed robbers come, nor be person wey owb house dey open door for them, if they request so, cos if you let them force themselves in blood shed go dey ooo

I don't pray a visit by Armed Robbers on anyone. May God in his infinite mercies continue to protect us from them AMEN

NB: I only just used the analogy to buttress my point that do we really need to build 90% with cement in a climate like ours.

The instruction should have just been "Guys you have made enough to recoup campaign donations you made, go back to status quo ante" lol

How can you direct the crashing of price if you don't know how much is the landing cost of such commodity, is government going to reduce its own tax and duties charges on that product. What about the price of diesel and kerosene at N160 per liter?

Cement price may drop as NNPC increases diesel supply to producers

UDEME AKPAN 20/05/2011 03:24:00

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has boosted the supply of diesel to support commercial production and distribution of cement in the country. The effort is directed at achieving the price reduction target handed down to cement manufacturers by President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, who made this known yesterday at an interactive session with journalists in Lagos said the Kaduna, Warri and Port Harcourt refineries are presently processing commercial quantity of diesel. Cement producers had blamed increased production and transportation cost on the high price of cement which had reached N2,500 per 50 kilogramme bag, up from N1,600 a year ago, citing rising diesel price which had climbed from N120 per litre to N175 per litre. Alison-Madueke, who confirmed the availability of commercial stocks in the country, said: “Today, all the refineries are producing diesel as we are only importing a little.

We have a 22-day storage capacity, which is good.” She, however, said the inability of the government to control the entire process was a major constraint. According to her, “The problem is the retail end of it. We need to be able to control it. What we can control is the bulk outputs as we give it out at N40 per a litre for kerosene, but they are selling at more than N100 per litre.

AGO is fully deregulated. You have the right to make profit but you do not need to profiteer”. The minister, however, said that necessary directive had been issued to the NNPC and the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to sanitise the situation as soon as possible. She noted that though the country operates a free market economy, the Federal Government could not watch and fold its arms while innocent Nigerians go through hardship in accessing the vital cooking fuel due to the profiteering activities of some “middlemen”.

Allison-Madueke pointed out that: “Checks at the NNPC and its subsidiary, the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), indicate that we have enough in terms of product sufficiency. Our investigation shows that kerosene has however, become scarce and selling at high price due to distribution problems caused by middlemen who have made it their vocation to profiteer from the product.” As a way out, the minister charged the managements of the NNPC and the DPR to bring to an end the ugly situation within the next few days.

Under the arrangement, the NNPC through its subsidiary PPMC will ensure that products are loaded out from the three refineries and the coastal jetties to all the nooks and crannies of the country while DPR has the mandate to activate compliance measures and all necessary control strategies to squelch the incidents of arbitrary pricing and sharp practices. Already, the NNPC has swung into action by increasing the volume of kerosene allocation from 10 million litres to record 12 million litres per day to guarantee that the country has enough kerosene. The 12 million is in excess of the estimated national consumption level of about 10 million litres per day.
