Nigeria is the only place you can go and borrow 100k form a friend or you visit one big man and he will give you 10k as transport. Money scarce for oyinbo land. No one has money to throw around you have to be very strategic. If you are not organized or you have longer throat, you will suffer.

As a Nigerian in Diaspora myself, one of my good friends (We both in our 30s’) who is Ghanaian is ready to go back to his country. He has been very frugal here saving over $100,000 cash/yr for the past 3 yrs. He says he has dedicated 3yrs of his life to working so he can set himself up for life. He worked as a health care support worker, taking care of the disabled and aged ppl, a job many people will consider dirty.

MY friend who was covered by his employer was rejected at the hospital because the Health insurance company wasnt remitting the money it was supposed to.
Another friend lost his even with his coverage after his wife was admitted in one ' reputable' hospital

lol brother I can break it down like that because I have lived in the abroad too plus i know many nigerian women who do that actual job and i know most of them are paid 15 dollars an hour. i was even being generous when i put the 20 dollars there. That whole abroad is utopia nonsense that these nigerians peddle is just a mirage. There are only 3 groups of nigerians enjoying abroad and anyone who does not fall within that group is suffering. thats just facts. and these 3 groups of people only constiture about 4 percent of the diaspora or even less than 4 percent meaning 96 percent are struggling. The 3 groups are

1- Nigerian children who live abroad and stay with their parents. they dont know the struggles, mummy and daddy is the one struggling. so being a child living in your parents house abroad is the ultimate enjoyment

2-Medical doctors. If you are a medical doctor in the abroad enjoyment is your middle name. Although they will kill you with CALLS meaning every other week you are expected to sleep in the hospital premises overnight and do night duty. its veryy stressful as you get older. its like doing nightshift for like 2 days straight. but the money is extremely good

3-IT GURUS. and not just any run of the mill IT guy but i mean like an IT guy who can code in almost 10 languages both frontend and backend and can handle database administration etc. JUST A TOP IT EGGHEAD. like a genius level type IT intellect. you will enjoy tire. they will even pay you 500 dollars an hour if you are that much of an IT GENIUS. and i repeat not just any regular run of the mill guy we have in nigeria who can code but not that great at it. i mean someone who they can explain a project to you and you can bang out the program for it in less than a week with no bugs

As someone who has spent 13 years of his life in the UK before relocating to Nigeria, I will say that moving back home is tough if you are not financially independent and don't have a back-up plan in case things don't work. All what the previous posters said about the cost of living in the west, lack of culture and risk of running a rat race is true. However, Nigeria is not a stable option either. The cost of living is rising and business is not booming like before. The growing insecurity in the country is not helping matters. I don't blame many people who want to leave.

In my personal opinion, the best way to enjoy the best of both worlds is if you have papers. I get that not everybody is interested in such but it is a massive advantage that a lot of people are ignoring. If life is unbearable in Nigeria, you can always relocate. Foreign citizenship gives you access to foreign health care that you may not have in Nigeria. The point is not to limit yourself to one place. Many people who did so are regretting it.

With the way the economy of the nation now is in serious depression/regression I don’t advise anyone not even my enemy to come back, except the person is well made. Do you know that 1000naira is equal to 850 cfa as of today? Cfa is now valued higher than naira! What a shame! Did you know uIn 2011/2012/ (1000 )naira was equal to 3500/3000 cfa. It’s a shame really that ordinary Cotonou is doing better than us! I have a relative that’s abroad and she used to cry and regret her stay over there saying it’s too lonely. Only her with the kids, no one to talk or party with, to cut the long story short, fast forward from 2020 the music changed, she has started thanking God for relocating her to Europe. In fact she said if she dies there, she wants to be buried there, she owns a duplex, a car, her children are going to good school over there, she’s eats anything she wants including cooking African meals there and I tell you she doesn’t spend much on cooking or shopping, she said life has never been better that with the way they watch things happening on here on TV and with the news update she’s scared of coming back and is grateful to God. So many folks that swore that they would never leave naija cos they’re feeding well and driving a car now what’s to run out. My dears make una reach US embassy and See even wealthy people that wants to jakpa! Haaa..... relocation even if it’s to Cotonou for now is better till buhari steps down or his tenure is over

Nothing beats passives income. An income you earn with little or no effort.

Not all of us have that opportunity to earn so much, but if you can earn and save that much abroad. You can set yourself up for life in Nigeria and put yourself in a position to build generational wealth.

I am not talking doing business ooo, I am talking acquiring assets that generate passive income.

Also , alot of our people go through alot just to have papers. So change courses, u will see a someone good in engineering studying to be a nurse just so he can get papers. Or marrting people they have no love for just for papers sake. That's alot of burden on mental health alone.

Continuing to stay abroad forever , may not always be the best.

My brother, all of you should return home and let's rebuild this country. You have said it all by my lovely Ghanaian friend's plans. Nigeria is ripe and succulent for the taken. Opportunities abounds and so are Threats but the kind of strengths you guys show over there can make you succeed. It is just that the beauty of the country tend to bring out the weaknesses in us more but if you are disciplined and cool headed you can re-learn fast and quietly grow without making too much noise.

Imagine if 5000 Nigerian youths from America enter Nigeria and create value that empowers themselves times 100. The multiplier effects can reach about 5 million people making the 5000 millionaires in the process.

I wish I can like this post a million times, I had to log in to respond. People just come online to spew misinformation, how can you save 100k/Y when your earnings as a caregiver is an average of 30/40k a year?

All western countries are built on capitalism, only those that have highly sought after skills like the op above mentioned earn well.

If you have a decent income stream in Nigeria you can live well but you need to be wary of leeches, especially so called 'family' or others who will try to use emotional ties to fleece you. If you can do that and take care of your physical security and health then you will be fine.

The other thing that I suggest Africans do is talk to oyinbo who have left their own countries, often for good, to get an understanding of what life is really like there. I feel as if a lot of Africans make unfathomable assumptions about what daily life is truly like for the average person in many of these western nations. If you go to Thailand or Dubai you will meet countless westerners who have left their home countries with no intention of ever returning. Speak to them, you might learn something.
