gidgiddy:It's not necessarily the case.. Bearing Bini Surname doesn't make him Bini..Which language does he speak? Do they even understand Bini? I gave an Instance of Abdulfatai Buhari, a senator representing Oyo North Senatorial district.. Buhari is a FULANI name..Why is he bearing a FULANI name? |

Liebermantic: Yoruba is not Igbo, what obtains in Yoruba land is not always in Igbo land. In Igbo land, your first and second name can be anything, but your surname must be Igbo. Irabor is not an Igbo surname, it is an Edo surname and Lucky Irabor is from Agbor that has border with Edo His first and second names comes from the fact that he was born in an Igbo speaking area, but his last name shows that his ancestors are Edo people. No Igbo man can bear an Edo surname "Irabor". So please stop calling Lucky Irabor an Igbo just because he has two middle names that are Igbo. I have two middle English names but Im not English. My surname tells everyone I am Igbo |

gidgiddy: While I agree that Irabor is not Igbo because he himself has never identified as Igbo for once , likewise his king the Dein of Agbor and many other Agbor people, they all live in nostalgia of their Bini (slavery) days. However, your view that to be Igbo is totally dependent on having an Igbo last name is totally false. First of all, you have to know that the idea of bearing a paternal surname is alien to ancient Igbos. Because Igboland was a mainly polygamous patriarchal society, children were often identified by their mother's name and not their father's name. You hear things like, "is that not chike, "Agbonma's son? Nope that is Onyeka Ugochi's son. So in gatherings, Chike would be called Chike Agbonma, while Onyeka would be called Onyeka Ugochi. This is because in a single big polygamous compound, the wives can have children bearing similar names. As they all belonged to the same man, the names of their mothers becomes a better way to distinguish them. Furthermore, most surnames are usually first names of an ancestor in the past. If an Ika man marries an Edo woman who bears him a son and names the Son Irabor in her native language. Irabor will speak IKa(an Igboid language) and his descendants might adopt Irabor as their surname. You see lots of these non Igbo names in borderline Igbo clans. For example,in Nsukka, it's common to see many Igala surnames borne by the people, likewise Idoma sounding names in Ebonyi and parts of Enugu sharing boundaries with Idomas. I have met an Aro man with the surname Ekong. Lol! These are usually names acquired through non Igbo mothers that survives as surnames down the line and should not be a factor to determine ones ethnicity. Additionally, in olden days, people give their children names of their good friend. An Aro man with an Efik man as best friend could have easily given his Igbo son an Efik name in honour of the friend. People also arbitrary name their children after powerful public persons. Many Anioma people were giving their kids names of powerful Bini princes and Obas. Imagine that GEJ parents named him Azikwe because they admired Zik. How many Nigerians gave their children the name Clinton during the his reign as USA president? Hundreds! 8 Likes |

gidgiddy:Ika before 1967 were Igbo clan.. Whoever is found inside Ika remains IGBO.. Is Rita Dominic an English Lady? Stella Damascus should also be English according to your logic. Yorubas bearing FULANI Surames are Yoruba purely but IGBOs bearing English or Bini Surnames are Bini or English, right?..Ewu! |

Liebermantic: Stop reasoning like a fool. Lucky Irabor with an Edo surname has never told you he is an Igbo man. We are even debating about people like Rotimi Amaechi, Nyesom Wike and Sunday Oliseh that have Igbo surnames and are from Igbo speaking areas, if they are Igbo You want us to be debating about Lucky Irabor who has an Edo surname? Guy get sense |

proeast:Bros I am Ikwerre. The sentiment among us is that we prefer being a slave in an Ijaw man country to being a prince in Biafra. We have never been Igbos. We never identified with Igbos when we had everything to gain before the war let alone now we have everything to lose. You Igbo people are making a huge mistake. Ikwerre man feels very superior to anything Igbo. It has been that way right from time. He views anything Igbos as slave related. You may not blame Jim since through his doorpost most Igbos were dragged to the Atlantic and across for slavery. He still has that mentality that anything associated with Igbo has to do with slaves. Forgive me but that is the thinking of a typical Ikwerre man. If you call him Igbo what runs to his mind is that you are calling him a slave. As a prove if you have link to Amaechi or Wike or any Ikwerre man of substance just address him as an Isuoma person. If he doesn't scatter that place with you let me know what happened. Isuoma is what the Ikwerres call the Igbos. It is as disdainful as the nyamiri the Hàusa Fulanis call the Igbos. In all an Ikwerre man will never in his life accept to be Igbos. It is only in recent time the Ikwerre daughters started to get married to the Igbo men. Previously it was resented. The men can marry them but not as first wife but as an aid to the first wife You need to leave with the Ikwerres to understand this feeling. |
