Morality and doing the right thing is a universal concept for which you do not need a religious foundation to justify its need to exist. Nor do you need to model your creator in your own image and ascribe or project to this deity your own psychological and physiological propensities for materialism.

The woman in the story was complaining about her tithes and all the things she gave the church. Those are material things.
