You committed no crime. The security operatives especially the Police took advantage of your gullibility. How can you part with 40k just like that. My candid advise is for you to take up the matter. Particularly the 40k.
Guy's should learn to stand their ground whenever they start their wickedness.
it is better u pay those devils than let them waste your life, time, and even set u up

Whenever a Police officer is intimidating/harassing you just Google the Police Public Relation Officers phone number for that state command, if your call go through, I assure you (No Joke) table don turn against those officers.
I've tried that in several states and it worked for me.
But be civil when you engage rogue officers and make that call out of site.
I will advise you to search for the phone number of the PPRO Edo command and complain.

“My first experience picking up a car from Tincan Port Lagos to Port Harcourt”

The day started off with me picking up the car from Lagos Port. Thereafter, I proceeded to register it to avoid unnecessary interception from security personnels on the road ensuring all necessary documents were in check.

Knowing how the system functions, I was advised to keep some cash handy for some security personnels I’ll meet at various checkpoints. What I encountered on the road didn’t seem like extortions . In fact! One can say the police, army and every other security officers that are suppose to protect lives and properties of our dear country are the people robbing us.

How did we get here?
Nigeria security services have destroyed this country!
There were about 23 check points all filled with police ,army and customs on the high way. Each had a particular amount stipulated to be paid.
I met like 9 custom officers checking for duty papers. Each asked for a “1k non-negotiable fee” as that was a standard for them. Then the army took 200 naira at each check point.

The police are the worst!
These guys are hardened criminals disguised in uniforms to operate legally on the road. They have no mercy. I spent 2-5k each at checkpoints.
I ran out of luck as I approached Benin where the bigger problem started.

I got to a checkpoint and was told my car is tinted and the registered plate number didn’t reflect on their system. I was taken to their station and asked to pay the sum of 100k. I looked at heaven, left and right for help but none came. I started negotiating the extortion, and we ended up at 40k. After paying I was allowed to leave and so I continued my journey hoping this time the extortions were over.

As God answered my prayers, I didn’t meet any Custom officer from Benin to Port Harcourt just police check points.
In total, I spent 98k on extortions and it saddens me. The questions that still lingers in my head is “why Port Harcourt and Warri Ports are still not functioning till date”?
Why do our Politicians Politicize everything in this country?
If not politics, tell me why the Ports in the South are not operating?
There are lots of readjustments to be made especially where citizens in my country have accepted extortion as norm.
We need to do better!

God bless!!
oga you're JJC I normally carry my motor from Ibadan to Enugu the highest I paid is 5k yes, police are smart the moment them see fear for your face they will extol you, keep calm if u are driving on the highway.u don't need to pay custom if your paper is complete.

I admire your courage but the bolded part is what I still find hard to believe among we Nigerians, how difficult is it for you to share your knowledge on how someone else could benefit/go about it next time without going through those thieves in uniform again ,was what I expect you share with the public.

As long as your papers are complete, be bold and u dont need to settle every check point.
Its tinted permit police is using now to chop especially if not factory tinted and even with medical report.
The rogues in uniform extort more especially if the car is unregistered.
So next time be bold, more confident and learn to stand your ground.
Remember your not caught with a gun or contraband and remember is your tax money that pay these rogues.

I keep saying that the real problem of Nigerian are ordinary. Nigerians themselves. Imagine what Nigeria will be if ordinary Nigerians in uniform and those in other profession chose to do what is right and not fall for greed.

What is frsc doing about their number plate database? Or is it intensional?

Police are cheating people because of this. My car will be two years in December and my number is yet to appear on their website. It kept saying number is valid but yet to be assigned.

All I see is inexperience.
Lagos to Benin road has the most notorious police Checkpoints in Nigeria and if you're not smart, you will lose your life on that road in the hands of men in uniform. I ply that road almost every week. I drive a pretty decent car so their eyes are always up when they see me but they can't do me nothing cuz they have tried many times. Rule number 1 of police men is, never be in a hurry to leave.
Tell them to give you bed, that you want to sleep. Na dem go dey beg you to go.

As for the tinted glass issue, pls try and know your right sometimes. I know these people don't respect people's rights but tell them categorically that the tinted glass rules states that cars that are factory tinted has a grace period of 6 months for the user to change the windows.
Tell them to call their IG and ask or they should transfer you to Abuja. cheesy
But I have a warning for you, before you start trouble with them, stand in front of them and call your family, make sure the police men can hear you telling your family members where you are and why they are holding you. If you can, mention one of them or describe how he looks. If not, they will just kill you and sell your car to someone going to Cotonu

Next time, go with like two soldiers who have a bit of rank. If you pay them each 20k, that will ease your movement. Left 9ja years ago, so I am not sure how that works now. Pele.

Quite unfortunate, I brought mine (Lagos to Enugu) spending N100. Jusst after Ore, my papers where being checked and the Police man checking my papers was rebuked by his colleague telling him that he would not see any fault with that paper. Collected the papers and returned to me and said; Oga I know Say na new motor, find us something. That was when I parted with N100.

Oga you are part of the problem of the common man.. I am so angry at your actions. 2-5k at every police check point for what exactly.
Didn't you do your papers. You even paid 40k. Now they will be looking out for same amount from other road users.
Definitely you must part with some money when you meet the custom guys but this outrageous sums you are typing out here.

haaaaaaaa 98k chia when your vehicle delivery makanaki dey here. Its all good,
we thank God you got to your destination safely aside the mental stress and torture. An issue happened yday to someone a Nairalander introduced me to last week, I was suppose to help them buy & deliver a foreign used 2018 MB GLE350 which was registered on Monday but i suggested to the owner that if he can let me deliver it this weekend thats after they didn't buy from me which he declined that he wanted it in owerri yday so unfortunately and fortunately for me I lost the job. I was in a warehouse hustling yday afternoon when I checked my phone and saw 8 missed calls haba wetin happen, I called the man back and was told federal customs (FOU) at Ore have seized the beast and they were begging them with 100k but they declined. there were about leaving Ore to Lagos because the car has been seized and imagine this said vehicle was bought from a reputable auto dealer(name withheld for now) in Naija. They refused to buy from me because I am still in the lower tier (if not the lowest self) of the auto business and didn't want to risk their money entering voicemail.Luckily we convinced them to take 100k b4 they could release the vehicle to us and told the man to return the car to lagos that I will deliver it myself on a later day which i didn't disclose to the customs because they go wait for me if they know when I go wan pass. even the said customs at Ore informed me that if that vehicle miraculously gets its way to ofosu-okada in benin. its outright seizure except by luck which is 1 out of a million chance. So let's check our custom paper very well before we purchase cars most especially those expensive ones, its easy for me to deliver a 05 corolla with low duty than delivering a 2018 Lexus RX350 Fsport with 60% duty paid. 4get you are buying from the top auto dealers na them dey bypass custom duty pass. God no go make our hard earned money just kpoof for our eyes oooooooooo.

It's so unfortunate that extortion by men in uniform has become the order of the day that we sadly gave to live with.

On the eastern ports, I'd rather ask why importers prefer Lagos as their port of call instead of calling at the ports closest to them. Cos the last time I checked, Rivers state has 2 functional ports (Port harcourt and Onne port).

Do your research and find out why the foreign foolanis who run the customs, NPA, NIWA etc will never let Eastern ports work. The joke is you bloody one nigeria mugus.

Sir, it's a game and moreso they are all being foolish..

It's all a play to see Lagos remaining the hub or center of business..

Otherwise I still don't understand why someone would have to drive several miles to do something that can be easily fixed near by..

Believe it or not, we have lazy governor's...

By now there's nothing stopping ports to be established in several other states in Nigeria but instead of doing this, The government would rather prefer building a railway line to a far away country Niger...Stupid pple.

@Naija8240 I am waiting for the day Wike will take up that last part of the point you raised. How can a country of 200m depend on the port in Lagos whereas there are ports in Onne, Calabar and Warri? It seems the South South governors left their fights to Wike alone.

boss it would cost at least 60k depending on the car if its an expensive ride I might charge up to 200k self if not more so someone will buy a car of let's say 25m con give me 50k to deliver to PH what jagbanas make he/she deliver am or betterstill use a flatbed and saying you didn't spend a dime to PH is strange even with you carrying police or soldias escort and you pass Benin bypass hmmmmm yes I have passed there over 70 times and I can tell you I only escaped twice without paying the 2nd time I said I won't ever try it and had to sleep along the way because customs pursued me from 1st bypass going towards the 2nd bypass and I didn't want to risk the ones at oghara thats close to sapele because they fit don give them info that night say incase this particular car pass detain am there for us and on the delay you never jam the one wey go delay you for 2hrs and yes those PSC guys are the ones paying their salaries and also incharge of firing and hiring them so they no go wan Bleep up grin
