Depends on the industry. For a consultant in say a big4, he wont say much from that money. I have been there and I can tell you cutting too much corners to "save" will cost him his career in some industries.

Good thing is he can make 2-3x that amount in a few years if he invests in himself
Interesting

Please how can i get into any of these big4?

I think the problem is saving what's left after spending. The right order is spending what's left after saving. Assign a percentage to save every month, and you'll find that you can actually survive on what's left.

Bros, where in Lagos you go see average looking 2-bedroom flat for 250k? You'll need to budget at least 400k, and you'll probably be living in the outskirts of Lagos. So imagine the person works on the island, how will such a person cope commuting to & fro?

To be honest, the guy spends recklessly. He should move to a cheaper accommodation, and cut some costs. If care is not taken, even when he earns 1m, he no go still see anything save. Make him forget big boy forming O. If dem sack am for that job now, he go be like say the whole world is crashing on him, cuz there is no way he will be able to cope. The best thing is to invest. Just look at the whole expenses listed there!

If I were earning ₦400k, I'd relocate to a flat where I can pay at maximum, ₦250k yearly (and that's because I want to have a family). A two bedroom flat is okay for a start.

I'd use my first monthly to pay it off, doing a little refurbishment too. I like to buy foodstuff in bulk so I am definitely going to spend up to ₦80k for it. If I don't have a freezer, I wouldn't bother buying goods that are too perishable. I would save for a freezer and a generator together.

For one person.

This person is living a large life.

A family of two feeds on 50k per month conveniently.

His feeding bill is off the roof.

He needs to cut down on data and airtime usage.

He needs to get an inverter, with 250k, he can get one that will serve him well for a long period of time. I've used mine for over a year without servicing, I only replaced the water.

He needs to cut down on his hangout expenses.

If he's a commuter that goes from work to house, his fueling bill will reduce.

What inverter system are you using? Does it power your refrigerator?
I need to cut down on my generator costs too.

The Rent is very expensive. I know some stupid friends who can do such a thing. If you're not earning above half a million a month, then your rent should not be up to 1m annually. In my own opinion, his rent should not be more than 500-650k
thorpido:
N1m rent per annum is much for a salary of N400k per month.
If he doesn't cook, he can still cut down on feeding.Bread and tea/coffee sometimes, make noodles etc. He could also get a cook to make meals weekly and he stores in the freezer and microwaves.
There are other places he can cut expenses.

Honestly, I don’t think the breakdown is outrageous but the person is definitely living above their means. They need to cut down on less important things to them and save more.

Their annual rent is justifiable to me. 3 months of your hard work to put a roof over your head is not that crazy.
Re: Is N400,000 A Bad Salary In Today's Nigeria? Is He Doing Something Wrong by mroyato(m): 12:30am On Sep 21, 2021
I have looked at this budget for almost 10 hours before making this post, and to be honest, there's absolutely nothing extravagant about it. As a matter of fact, all I see is a young man trying to live a very modest life.

He didn't even have a plan for vacation, gadget upgrade, or a car upgrade plan in his budget.

To shed some light, I will make a justification for some of the items on the budget.

1. Housing: I want to assume that this young man is resident in Lagos. For those who do not know, getting a decent apartment in lagos is costly. For a professional like him, it is equally important to live in areas where he can easily connect to the highland or mainland. Or would you rather him reside in egbeda, ikorodu or some funny neighbourhood where he will spend half of his life in traffic because he wants to save some money off his yearly rent?

2. DSTV: Would you rather have the young man go to the viewing center to watch a late champions league game at 8.45pm? Then on his way back home at 11.30pm, he gets harassed by the police who can decide to act funny with his destiny? I would rather him pay 9500 for DSTV so that he can watch his favorite teams whenever he chooses to.

3. Laundry: It's obvious that some people don't understand how tedious washing and ironing can be. For someone who's job requires him to work during weekends, he has no choice but to patronise a Laundry, and 2k for laundry every week is not out of proportion if you ask me. In some organisations, you could get sacked for simple issues like wearing rough and unironed clothes to work.

4. Feeding: 2500 per day at 800 naira per meal is a very modest budget. For those who are a strong advocate of home made meals, kindly quantify the time, energy, and resources required to convert your foodstuff into palatable food. When you are done with this, you will realise that you didn't make any significant saving by cooking yourself. For people who also leave home very early and arrive late at night, eating out is apparently the best option during the week. During the weekend, when you are not working, you may try to cook at home. It won't cost less either ways.

On a last note, do not forget that a budget is only an estimated cost of expenditure. It does not necessarily mean that all the money will be consumed as planned. There will always be some unspent funds in some of the itinerary which can go into some other itinerary or end up as savings as the case may be.

I can assure you, and I am 100% convinced that, this guy will still not save up to 10k monthly, if his salary is suddenly increased to 850k let’s say, by next month.
