Sorry shes going through this, however like a lot of people have told you, please get a second opinion in a better hospital. They might have to try opening up the occlusion and possible stenting. If that fails then amputation might happen, I don't understand why they jumped straight to amp.

So much misinformation on Nairaland and that's why you shouldn't seek help medical help from general forums.

Reperfusing the leg would only work if the tissue was alive not necrotizing. And even then success rates are low.
The onset of gangrene is a tell take marker that necrosis has already occured/is occurring.
so what’s the misinformation there? Just gave a general opinion

I'm a Type 1 Diabetic for 11 years now. It's no joke.

Don't be in a hurry to amputate the leg I have seen something like this before where the man involved later walked..

I feel same too.

Have you considered using acupuncture approach??

And some naturopaths??

You could try reaching out on these professionals too for their opinions as well.

Personally I don't always conclude just based on what one or two medical doctors profer as solutions....(they may not be so right you know), I always dig deep and look for more solution to avoid regrets.

Don't take too long to make a decision, what you described is gangerene and it spreads. If you know you have the money fly her out, if not listen to doctors here. It spreads fast.

Lol. Even in the Queen's palace gangrenous diabetic foot secondary to diabetic neuropathy will be amputated.

Either they do what I'm assuming to be an above the knee amputation now or they'll come back much later for a full limb amputation.

But you are not God you know.
Like amputation would be that easy on the amputee and the family?

Encourage OP to atleast seek more other solution albeit asap before finally settling for the last option which ofcos you yourself it will never be a mean task on them.

Some Nigeria medical practictioner and whack
diagnoses are like 5&6, so don't lol yet.

I almost fell victim of "cutting my son open" in the name of surgery for one stomach thing....long story anyways, but thank God I stayed calm to think despite the doctors pressure on me to make deposit so they could carry out the operation.

I left there, went to another hospital with my child....hmmm! This second doctor just told me in conclusion, madam you are just lucky you didn't fall for that.
More than how many years now and we are still doing very very fine.( Every glory and praise to God Almighty).

Op like I opined earlier, please I beg you, seek for second sound opinion but please be fast , if after all that ,you see amputation is the last call, then you know you tried.
Peace!

Somethings in medicine are kinda set in stone. It's just like someone with HIV asking if they should commence HAART.

Funnily enough. I've seen OPs mom in person. Her gangrene was already transforming into the wet type meaning an infection was already in the works.

I understand where you're coming from and true, sometimes second opinions are priceless. But OP is not seeking the opinion of professionals. He's here on Nairaland with chalartans who're recommending everything from 'stem cells, ' to dry fasting and massage therapy.

From his response, He might fall for one of this and whatever alternative therapy he chooses will only complicate his mom's problem. You don't play with gangrene in adults. More so when it's gangrene from diabetes.

I already highlighted the misinformation. You don't reperfuse dead tissue. Once necrosis has set in so called 'peemanent' tissues of which skeletal muscles and nerves are, you debride (or this case where it's extensive) amputate. More so when the offending issue is diabetes.

Hello NL.
I'm going to keep this brief.

It started three weeks ago. my mum, who was walking normal with no problem suddenly could not walk. Her left leg began paining her severely that day. My mum was all in tears... She was rushed to the hospital where it was discovered that her sugar level was on the high side. The hospital gave drugs which stabilised it, at that point my mum was very weak, couldn't eat, each time she eat she throws up and also had some pain in the leg still. After a week in the hospital, we were then referred to a teaching hospital after a test showed that creatinine in her kidney was high.

The teaching hospital tried their best and I can say my mum is now okay. Except for the left leg. She can't still walk on it, the leg feels cold to touch with a little discolouration above the foot.

Doppler test showed that blood isn't really flowing through the leg. And they said they will need to amputate the leg to prevent the infection from growing to the other parts of the body.

Please I want to know if you know anyone who had similar condition and amputation was recommended but was later healed without need for amputation.

Please share your recommendations. I need my mum now more than before in my life. We are confused on whether to allow them to go on with the amputation or seek other alternatives.

Thank you very much.

Pls note that as at now, her sugar level, creatinine and other things are normal.

About the Diabetes i have seen yoruba tradomedical in Ogun state heal Diabetes... not regulate but heal it... i dont know the exact place but two people got healed and about the leg i dont know if thats something they can heal or not...
prosthetic leg fitting in Nigeria is 200k to 300k or 500k depending on quality

If the amputation hasn't been done, can you wait a few more days, say like 3days. If you can then do this. Look for alot of limes, cut it into two and get all the waters out. Look for Mango leaves (the fresh ones) alot of it as well then use the lime juice to wash the Mango leaves, such then you will sieve out the lime juice and the Mango leaves. Let your mom drink it at least 2shots, 3times a day for 3days. Then ask the doctor to test her sugar level again. I had to register to comment when I read your story! All the best.

Sorry about your situation must b really tuff for you.
However, from your explanation if this whole episode just started about 3 weeks ago which I believe is still early maybe blood vessel surgery could allow blood to flow to this/these cells/tissues.
Second or third option wont hurt as long as its a trusted hospital or even traditional option (yes our tradition medicine has been badly abandoned). But you av to move fast as obviously her case stems from the diabetes and hopefully the bacteria infection slow down all.
We are all praying for you and your mom will be fine. We all always need true motherly love

I know of an old woman (serrialoan) who stays in umuahia, Abia State.
She's very very good with herbs and have healed so many people facing amputation issue which non of their body parts was gone.
E.g : my friend got involved in a fight which 1 of her finger was almost bitten off. She went to gwagwalada specialist hospital and the only option was to amputate the finger because it has affected the veins. She cried and cried.
When she came to visit me, I couldn't bear awful odour coming out of the finger.
To cut the long story short, it was the herbs the serrialoanian woman applied on the finger that drained all the purses that was accumulating in that finger out.
Glory be to God! The finger is healed.

As already spoken by above OP, amputation is the only solution. I have a family member who had a similar case. We took her to about 5 different hospitals also applying a few trado medicine, but alas, it was still amputated at the long run. After which the patient felt so relieved and we all regretted all the time wasted seeking alternative solution.

I know it could be draining emotionally, psychologically and even financially but please let her go ahead with the amputation. Afterwards you get her the prothestic leg.

Time heals all! Good luck

You can Google some herbal medicine that can help transport blood to the various vein/bone. Example. Garlic, ginger bitter cola, bitter leaf etc. Mix it for let her be drinking it. I hope I make Sense.

Please seek for expert opinion by going to a specialist hospital. The situation is dicey, and if nothing is done on time your mom might lose her life.

Last week we buried an uncle who died from Diabetic complications. Earlier on he was told to amputate his legs, but the family wanted to go traditional. In the end, it was damn late. What started as a small sore took his whole life.
