That is almost true. He could also be engaged. That's if the wedding date has been set.

What if he has a girlfriend? What my friend was implying was that if someone is only in a relationship that anything is fair game lol. I couldn't do that. Once I hear a guy has a girlfriend, I avoid him like he has Avian Flu.

It sounds pretty messed up, but my aunt has said the same thing to me, lol. She doesn't take my relationships seriously and is always trying to hook me up with other people she thinks will be a better fit longterm.

I don't think this saying should be taken as a licence to cheat. Just more that people are still "on the market" until they get engaged/married.

If he has a girlfriend, and they are not engaged, then it just means you can't boink him until he breaks up with her.  But you can talk, hang-out, get to know each other. If they were no longer looking, they would be married or about to wed.  That's what marriage is all about.

I know most men here (local and foreignor unless if they are a playboy) would say he is in a relationship if he is having a gf and if he is engage, he would say he has a fiance and if married, than he has a wife. But if they say they are single, meaning they dont have a gf/fiance/wife and is available for dating

well, i think it depends and as one poster rightly said, there are lots of gray areas with the term *single*.

Then issues like single and searching and single but not searching comes into play.

If a man is not married then he is either single or attached. . . . . It's really that simple

The expression "single" originated in the era when a "relationship" between a man and woman was a secret affair. Except a man is courting a woman for marriage, then he cannot as much as kiss her openly. Like so many words in English language the expression "single" has evolved to mean when a person is not in a "relationship"

IMO once anyone has a bf/gf then s/he isn't single.

It may not say dating, but I've seen quite a few saying "long-term partner" or "live-in partner" recently. I suppose it depends on the kind of form or application being filled lol.
