The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Thursday said legalization of consumption of cannabis will take Nigeria back to it’s dark days.

Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), the Chairman and Chief Executive of the agency, said this at an interactive session with heads of security agencies, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and heads of government agencies in Jos, Plateau as he rejected the calls for Cannabis legalization.

Some Nigerians have been advocating for the legalisation of the drug for health and economy purposes.

But Marwa said that legalising cannabis would truncate its ongoing fight against drug abuse, stressing that such a move would also take Nigeria back to its dark days.

He revealed that 10.6 Nigerians were currently consuming cannabis, adding that legalising it would further destroy the nation.

“NDLEA rejects absolutely the call for the legalisation of cannabis; it is a choice between earning money and the importance of life

“There is no research about the healing qualities of cannabis, but we all know on the other hand that it causes brain disorder, psychosis, it destroys the lungs and other key organs of the body.

” It definitely affects one’s behaviour as well.

“NDLEA will not accept that; we in NDLEA reject the move in totality,” he noted.

The NDLEA boss admonished security agencies and other stakeholders to support the agency in its bid to curb the tide of drug abuse in the nation.

Whether you legalize it or not people are still taking it. So it is better to legalize it and get the VAT off it.

In Netherlands you refer to, the people are not thinking of how to eat at least one meal a day.

In Nigeria , the guy that has smoked cannabis on empty stomach will more likely commit crime to feed to at least have a day's meal.

Buba Marwa should not head the NDLEA. There's better qualified personel

The agency, most importantly, needs someone who can think outside the box

I agree with NDLEA on this. By the way we are talking about the abuses of cannabis especially in a low developing economy plus high percentage of ignorant miseducated population shocked

Before the coming of the white man, cannabis was legal. The same white man that criminalised cannabis has legalised it in his own country, but our people are the ones now carrying the cannabis ban on their heads. God, please give us sense in this country.

angry
I Dont support the legalization of cannabis
The Nigerian youth will be completely doomed

The issue is since the government doesn't provide jobs, weed seems to be the only cheap gateway to catch some fun

Then imagine plus lack of Education, they will just consume overdose thinking it's a sign of being a big boy.

If Nigeria must legalize it, they have to create a distraction like jobs and also create massive awareness programmes

Imagine if weed dy legalize, tout for Nigeria go dy more brutal {because e Don turn to common commodity for all man}

Fat Bubba Marwa should not panic over the loss of revenue to his agency when medical marijuana is legalized in Nigeria because cigarettes and alcohol can be banned instead of cannabis, thereby creating a much more lucrative source of income for Fat Bubba and his boys.

Very soon Nigeria will join Lesotho and other enlightened African nations that are raking in dollars with the legalized production of marijuana and its derivatives. Check out this video where the price of refined cannabis oil is quoted at $18,000 PER LITER!

We're so sorry, Fat Bubba Marwa. You will soon be irrelevant.

Agreed... The problem is not even legalization of these drugs but the fact that people will abuse them and that's the fear.

Weed is a gateway drug. Show me a crack addict, and I'll show you a weed lover.

That said, most Nigerians are mentally lazy, they don't deserve to be sedated by any means. They need to feel the pain in this country and train their minds to come up with useful solutions.

Stay sharp kings, leave weed for women!

Weed is rampant... All over the country , even a five year old child can get access to it... Our celebs waste no opportunities to flaunt it in their music videos.... Just legalize it already... And start exporting it... We have one of the best marijuana strains in Africa.... And yes legalizing won't increase crime rate because it is easily accessible whether or not it is legalized ... Our leaders better keep their western religious sentiment aside and look at the economical benefit.... I don't smoke weed now and legalizing it won't make me smoke it either ....

The seeds of Marijuana can replace your petroleum.

Do your research - Google is your friend.
