I read the preface and the first chapter of the book explaining what Development is in its complexity regarding history of mankind from the stone age to the later 19th century when the book was published. The conclusion I could draw from this book is this: Walter Rodney was an adherent follower of socialism and this, he fought tooth and nail to seek support for socialism across Africa.
The whole book is a joke. I was induced to wanted to read and know how europe underdeveloped us through the catching title but instead of the author to make logical views, he was overwhelmed with his love of socialism, and using all of his academic power to construct a delusional foe where there is none.
Almost 50 years after the publication of the book and additional decades after Africa emancipation from colonialism, Africa is still stagnant, even if not on a reverse mode.
Walter Rodney failed to mention the African lands that where never colonized. What is the rate of their development if we are to compare and contrast them with examples from Europe.
Imagine Walter making a point that "capitalism has created a wastage of resources channeled for advertisement while poverty ravaged the lower class." I laughed when I read that lines, what did he expect from a manufacturer bringing new items into the market amidst high competition. I wouldn't say that submission of his was daft but will leave it to everyone to term it to whatever that their discernment refer it to be.
The book could have been better represented under any kind of title that idolize socialism. Not disguising under ideas that have no qualified basics to influence the the minds of the new generation of Africans towards a tide of no port.
In my own conclusion, this generation should just know that slavery is not the fault of the Europeans, slavery had been practiced from antiquity. Our ancestors indulge in it even before the whites explore Africa. If anything is to be remind of slavery, we should be celebrating every individual parties and governments across the world that eradicated and put final stop on slavery( especially trans Atlantic slave trade). The likes of Abraham Lincoln, Olaudah Equano among the rest.
European colonialism is not our problem, but our culture and way of life.

Keep contradicting yourself, you said Mansa Musa built one of the earliest tertiary institutions in the world in Timbuktu but here you are disparaging Africa that if not for western education we would still be in dark. Don't you think the western world copied from Africa? And if Africa has been left untouched by greedy sojourn of the whites on the continent, Africa would have gradually developed her education for the better?

You said Africans don't have their letters and figures? What an insult to the great Amharic people of Ethiopia, the ancient Egyptians scholars and the people of old eastern Nigeria who had the insibidi ideoglyph.

Let this wokeness not obfuscate you from the achievements of ancient Africans as abtly written by Walter.

The idiot thinks he is smart but as dumb as a sheep.

You talk of some one giving you logical reasons of how the European underdeveloped Africa, but you have failed to even think logically, just last year Niger republic chased the French from their land and instead of the African union to support such a bold step they all came together to put a ban on Niger, even your country blocking it's borders against them, and you still ask how the Europeans underdeveloped Africa?

Except you are too blind to see that they implant their stooges in the helms of power and force them to do their bids.

With rate at which libya was developing fast, even more than most European nations who stopped the development?......who killed the hero?.....Africans should start using their sences ABEG.

Please recommend things fall apart for him to read and understand why it was written in the first place, the writer of the acclaimed book wrote from his own perspective which is very close to the truth.

Let agreed the examples you sighted are true. Of what percentage does it carried compared to the total number of Sub-Saharan africa countries? Or should we just agreed that all African countries leaders are stooge put in power by our colonial countries?
As I had said earlier, our culture and way of life is poor, it glorify enormous money with less work to corroborate it. Was it Europe that helped Nigeria to become stagnant in growth after disbanding of regional government in Nigeria?
From history, far back to the medieval era, the stronger communities shield the weak ones who seek protection from them towards any unwanted attack from outside. The stronger communities accept the treaties base on the fact that there is something for them to gain in return. There is no free service of this kind in the world. This, we even practiced in Africa before white exploration.
African countries are now Independent. It is left for the people to elect the right minds to lead them, or send on to the power, those that will sign any treaty to loot their nation with outsiders.
