Buhari to be in Lagos on Thursday for Bisi Akande’s book launch

December 08, 2021
10:47

President Muhammadu Buhari will, on Thursday, attend the public presentation of ‘My Participations’, the autobiography of Bisi Akande, former interim chairman of the APC.

The event will take place at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos state.

According to a statement by Tunde Rahman, media aide of Bola Tinubu, Buhari is the special guest of honour at the event; Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, is the chief host, while Tinubu, national leader of APC, is the guest of honour.

In his foreword on the book, Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate, described the autobiography as “a national gift that could not have been more instructively timed”.

“There are books whose very handling must be done with heavily insulated gloves since, virtually every page sizzles with contradictions between attestable reality and impudent claims, attempts to cover past crimes and dodge responsibilities,” Soyinka said.

Trained as an accountant, Akande was employed in his younger days as an executive of British Petroleum, a multinational oil and gas company.

He started his involvement in politics as a councilor in Ila-Orangun, Osun state, before he was elected into the constituent assembly in 1977. In 1979, Akande was appointed as the secretary to the state government of Oyo by Bola Ige, the then governor of the state. He later became the deputy governor in 1983.

Akande was one of the politicians that was detained by the military following the collapse of the Second Republic in 1983. After regaining his freedom in 1985, he reportedly vowed never to participate in politics again.

However, he went on to join other activists in opposing the military and emerged as the Osun state leader of Afenifere, Yoruba socio-political group.

In 1999, he became the governor of Osun state on the platform of the now-defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD).

Buhari to inaugurate made-in-Nigeria defence boat in December

October 31, 2021
22:38

President Buhari will inaugurate a made-in-Nigeria seaward defence boat in December 2021.

Awwal Gambo, chief of naval staff, said his visit to the presidential villa, on Sunday, was to officially invite the president to launch the indigenously built boat.

The boat is one of three being built by the Nigerian navy dockyard staff in Lagos.

The naval chief said the boat “will add to the set of vessels that we have for the protection of the Nigerian maritime territory against piracy, sea robbery, illegal bunkering and all other maritime crimes”.

Responding, President Buhari said completing the boat is an achievement the nation should be proud of.

“It prides us as a nation that we can build something from the scratch to finish, by our own shipyard. So, it is a thing of pride to us,” the president said.

Gambo who declined to mention the cost of building the boat said it is cost-effective.

“It is unlike when you get foreign vendors to build or to supply the ship. It’s saving a lot for the country and going forward, we are looking at doing more of that within the shortest possible time,” he said

The naval chief said other countries have indicated interest to partner with Nigeria in building and maintaining ships.

“We have the Democratic Republic of Congo, they are ready and willing to partner with us in shipbuilding and maintenance,” he said.

“We have Badagry shipyard that wants to build a shipyard in Badagry. They are also ready to partner with us in maintenance and construction and most of the countries in the West Coast are definitely going to patronise us.”

It's the third made in Nigeria seaward defence boat that was built by the Navy.

I've had to go down Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island at least once a month in the past 4 years and I have been shocked at the condition of the road. It was riddled with potholes and I was surprised that such an important road, which leads to Eko Atlantic City, the NTA, Silverbird Galleria, Naval Dockyard and other important facilities, could be left to deteriorate in such a shocking manner.

The Federal Ministry of Works moved to the site in 2019 and they have completely reconstructed the road from the Eko Hotel junction all the way to Marina. I believe that President Buhari will commission it during his visit.

The Lagos State Government.

LASG ANNOUNCES EMERGENCY TRAFFIC DIVERSION ON AHMADU BELLO WAY

The Lagos State Government will divert traffic on Ahmadu Bello Way from Adeola Odeku Intersection inwards Adetokunbo Ademola Roundabout (Eko Hotel) from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm on Thursday, 9th December, 2021.

A release signed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, said the road will be temporarily unavailable to motorists for the stated period, assuring that alternative routes have been mapped out to ease traffic flow within and around the designated route.

He explained that motorists will be diverted to Adeola Odeku via Akin Adesola, adding that road users will also be diverted to Oyin Jolayemi, Oko-Awo and Sanusi Fafunwa Streets as Akin Adesola connecting Ahmadu Bello Way by IBM will be closed to vehicular movement.

Oladeinde noted that Ozumba Mbadiwe will serve as alternative access for motorists to link their destinations as traffic from the road inbound Adetokunbo Ademola will be diverted to Ajose Adeogun and Sanusi Fafunwa Streets or redirected back to Civic Events Centre axis

The Commissioner reiterated that all feeder roads leading to Ahmadu Bello Way from Adeola Odeku intersection as well as those leading to Eko Hotel from Adetokunbo Ademola Roundabout will be temporarily closed to traffic from early hours of the day.

While assuring motorists that signage will be mounted along the routes to guide movements, Oladeinde affirmed that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), will be available to manage any inconvenience in order to reduce travel time for motorists.

The State Government appealed to the citizenry, especially those who reside and do business along the aforementioned routes to cooperate with officers assigned to manage movement within and around Victoria Island, stressing that the traffic diversion is for a short period.

The road will be closed from at least 8am till 2pm.

Baba Akande, one of the most frugal and disciplined public administrators Nigeria has.

I remember his first few days as Osun state Governor and he saw the budget for food for the Governor's House, he screamed and asked who are the people eating the meals that cost millions? He said they should bring out how his meal of two wraps of Pounded yam, efo riro and palm wine everyday could add up to millions, they couldn't answer him so he demanded that it should be scrapped and since it's just him and his family, he will feed them from his salary.

He is a thoroughbred accountant , highly disciplined, full of wisdom and like late Chief Bola Ige, has ready made scathing words for anyone who misbehaves. He has been in public service since 1977 yet still relevant till today without any stain on his credibility. He is one of the political fathers of Asiwaju Tinubu.
Happy birthday to you Pa Akande. May God bless your new age.

O ga o, it's this kind of question that makes Mr Femi Adeshina always mock some of you in his writings. It makes a mockery of what opposition should be. We can demand more but not suggest that we don't know what we are doing in Lagos after overwhelmingly voting for him twice.

Are you really from Lagos? If you are not truly from Lagos, I can excuse you ,you won't ask" of what use has his Presidency done for Lagos " or what APC at FG has done for Lagos. Is it the airport or the train or the Oshodi Apapa expressway or the Abeokuta expressway from Oshodi to Ikeja downwards or the blue rail CBN just released N45billion out of N60 billion to fund so that the project won't be an abandoned project or is it the positioning of Lagos to be the next state to produce the President?

These are the many reasons why Lagosians keep voting APC despite all attempts by the PDP.
