Published 3 February 2022 An elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, on Thursday, cautioned a fellow elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, against issuing threats when contributing to national discourse. Yakasai, who is in his late 90s, cautioned Clark in a statement, titled, “An appeal to the elderly Nigerians for constructive engagement in National discourse”, and made available to the Punch in Kano. He said, “I wish to comment on a statement, credited to my good friend, Chief E.K. Clark and published in the media concerning the part of the country that should produce our President in the coming presidential election in 2023. “My comment is predicated on the interview granted by one of my old friends, Chief Edwin Clark. The part of the statement that incurred my displeasure is where Chief Clark issued a veiled threat on the issue of unity and peaceful coexistence affecting different communities living together in our country.” According to the statement, Yakasai, who was a former Senior Adviser on National Assembly matters to ex-President Shehu Shagari, observed that in most of Clark’s comments on important national discourse, the elder statesman issues some kind of threats about the unity and peace in our country. Yakasai said, “Chief Clark is not the only elder statesman that issues such threats on unity and peaceful coexistence in our country. There is another elder statesman, who is also a friend of mine and who is fond of resorting to threats when discussing national issues.’ “I think at our age, we should avoid resorting to threats whenever we are discussing national issues. What is expected of people at our age is to provide leadership by way of offering advice and correcting any mistake we discovered made by younger Nigerians in the course of national discourse. “Threats are not expected from senior citizens in any country. What is expected of the senior citizens is leadership, moderation, and guidance. At the age of more than one hundred years of existence as a united country, what Nigeria needs from the leaders is maturity in any discussion, so that those of us with advancement in age would be moderation and exemplary leadership to the younger generation.” Threats, Yakasai emphasised doesn’t fall into the category expected of people, who are on their way to celebrating their centenary. He, therefore, appealed to “fellow elderly colleagues to please watch their language when contributing in an important national discourse”, stressing that will “make their contributions more positive in moving our nation forward than disuniting it”. So many illiterates commenting... ..is it no longer a democracy No-one is stopping anyone from contesting. When we lost Yaradua, the same dots threw out the gentleman agreement to allow North finish Yaradua tenure, they say it's a democracy, the VP ha e to take over, fine, and good, the North waited, and Jonah still want to contest, so they use the same Constitutional right to kick him out. Yorubas Gerrit, and align themselves with the winning team, the North have their turn, Even as the same Eebooo fought tooth, and nail to truncate it, now they want to reap where they did not sow.. ThEGodFaThEr115: Nigeria isn't a tribal Nation and it is extremely dangerous for some people to be calling for tribal President. North-East is the only zone that never produced President and if u are truly talking about equity, justice and fairness then they should be given the chance. HISTORY OF NIGERIA'S LEADERSHIP DISTRIBUTION BASED ON ETHNO-RELIGIOUS AND REGIONAL BACKGROUND Below is the data that calculated the years Nigerians are ruled under religious, ethnic and geographical location considerations. 60 years since independence, Nigeria was ruled by: 11years Obasanjo- Yoruba 9 years Yakubu Gowon-Angas 8 years IBB-Nupe 6 years GEJ-Ijawa 6yrs Nnamdi Azikwe-Igbo 5 years Abacha-Kanuri 7 years Buhari (+2yrs military regime)- Fulani 3 years Shagari-Fulani 2yrs Yaradua-Tuareg 6 months Agunyi-Ironsi-Igbo 2years Murtala, Shonekan & Abdussalam-Fulani, Yoruba & Hausa. If calculated along religious line, it can be seen that Nigeria was ruled under Christians Presidents for atleast 32years while Muslims Presidents ruled for 28 years. When calculated along geographical location, it can be seen that South ruled for almost 24yrs while North rule for almost 36yrs. Yoruba ruled for approximately 12years, Fulani ruled for less than 11yrs, Angas ruled for 9yrs, Igbos ruled for 6yrs, Ijaw had 6yrs, Kanuri had 5yrs, Nupe had 8yrs, Tuareg had 2yrs while Hausa had 1year only. North-Western presided Nigeria for about 17yrs, South-West presided for about 12yrs, North-Central enjoyed approximately 18yrs, South-South presided for 6yrs, South-East had 6yrs while North-East are still struggling to get to the apex position and still not agitating for it. |
