Update from SIGGY .ng

Bayero University Kano, graduate identified as Mathew, a first class degree holder of information media Studies, was shot dead by unknown Gunmen while travelling to Anambra with other passengers in a car, Siggy reports.

The fresh graduate, Mr Mathew, studied Information and Media Studies, graduated with first class from the Faculty of Communication, Bayero University Kano, (BUK).

According to reports, Mr Mathew was killed alongside other passengers at Ekwulobia, one of the largest cities in Anambra State after Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi.

His remains were reportedly deposited at the General Hospital Ekwulobia.

A course mate of Mr Mathew who also interned with him at PRNigeria, Salis Manager, said Mr Mathew was billed to participate in the forthcoming orientation programme of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.

“Mathew was among the first set of students to intern with PRNigeria Centre in Kano in 2019. He lost his father in June, few months to his final examination, and graduated as the overall best student of our Department in August 2021 and was due to enroll for mandatory NYSC programme next week,” Mr Salis said.

“He was on a 6-month non-residential fellowship program that trains, and mentors young citizen activists to push for democratic reforms – Gidan Yanci. He was on his way to Anambra from Abuja when the gunmen attacked their vehicle” a tear-filled Gambo Ibrahim, a bosom friend of Mr Mathew, who had been living with him right from their Diploma days narrated.

His sister, Jemila Mathew disclosed that Mr Mathew travelled with his boss along with other passengers including the driver in a private vehicle.

“After waylaying them, the gunmen opened fire on them, killing all of them except the driver who escaped. So, when we couldn’t reach him and hear of the incidence, we sent Sule’s picture to the mortuary to confirm if he was among those killed and we got feedback that he was identified among those killed,” she narrated.

“Prior to this sad news, I kept calling him on phone but couldn’t reach him then suddenly we heard this sad news. I am so shocked,” Binta Musawa, Mr Sule’s coursemate stated.

Mr Mathew hails from Ayangaba Kogi State. He was co-founder of hostutors.com a Nigeria social enterprise that focuses on making learning in formal and vocational education accessible and affordable for everyone by connecting all categories of learners with best-fit tutors.

His body is yet to be released at the time of this report from the mortuary at Ekwulobia.

This is just so sad. After all the struggles in the university, the young champ couldn't reap the fruits of his labourangry

I must reap the fruits of my labour, no gunmen, unknown gunmen, bandits, or any force be it spiritual or physical can stop it.

R. I. P. to him.

But first-class-graduate is not relevant in this post. Even a barrow pusher is equally a human. A bus conductor is not less human than a first class graduate. Let us learn to avoid sentiments when addressing critical issues. Every life matters. Nobody is more human than others. After all, first-class does not guarantee first-class benefits to society. A non graduate or a third-class graduate can treat society better than a first-class graduate. What matters here is that we have sadly lost a life, being a first-class graduate makes no difference here.

Other passengers died with him. Will you use first-class or third class to report their deaths? Using fir-class to report this one implies he is more important than those who died with him, and it is very wrong. Praise the person's academic excellence during his graduation and job promotions. Not when reporting his death, considering the fact that other people also died in the same incident. The post says many passengers were killed by the same killers and in the same vehicle. You are reporting this one as if other people that died with him are less important. Among the passengers killed, you do not know who might have become richer and more philanthropic in society. Therefore, mentioning first class here is just a sentiment to imply this guy's life worths more than other lives wasted by the gunmen.

I have been saying it for ages that SE & SS are the most dangerous regions in Nigeria. As for Maiduguri, if you live there your least worry is security. Can you say that of Ph, Onitsha, owerri etc? When Nnamdi Kanu started this senseless criminality, they kept mute. Now the violence is consuming them except those who are hiding in other regions.

Are the pictures below also from the South South region of Nigeria?

I hate to do this, but you trying to paint another region where insecurity is nothing close to that of the northern region where you are from is insane. In fact, you have been telling lies for ages.

Thats how Nigerians like to make others feel less important at the slightest opportunity. His first class didn't keep him from dying.
Just like some of our leaders forget that their wealth won't save them when death calls.
This life is so strange.
We keep segregating and labelling others based on their academic, social and economic status and then in death, we all become equals.
A first class dying at the same time with people who may not have gone to primary school. Death didn't look at his intelligence or smartness.
May their souls find peace in the afterlife.
