I totally agree with that working 24/7, an idle hand is the devils workshop. When boredom strikes and lack of something to do, the mind will wander.

But if they cut off financial support, I think it might make him more susceptible to trying to make ends meet through fast means I.e Gambling. Like, if I play safe with 1k, I will make 1,500 profit. And if the 1k is gone, he will want to win his money back n leave. We know how that story ends.
