Today marks International Pregnancy And Infant Loss Remembrance Day as well as being the end of Baby Loss Awareness Week, held every October 9 to 15 to mark the lives of babies lost in pregnancy or soon after birth,Metro News reports. In response to the news, one person wrote: ‘A bit insensitive if you ask me. It’s baby loss and bereavement day.’ Another replied: ‘Absolutely. Prince Harry and #Meghan announce excitement at #pregnancy on Baby Loss and bereavement day. #MeghanMarklepregnant. Adele Haywood said: ‘Aww, Meghan and Harry are pregnant. Did no-one think to inform them at @KensingtonRoyal that today is Wave of Light / Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day? Announcing tomorrow wouldn’t have hurt.’ Jo Sharpen added: ‘Really thoughtful of Harry and Meghan to announce their pregnancy on baby loss awareness day. #infertilitysucks #ttc #babylossawareness #pregnancy #miscarriage #trauma.’ Ruth Bender Atik, national director of the Miscarriage Association, said: ‘I imagine they didn’t know. There was drama at the Ekiti State Government House on Sunday as outgoing Governor Ayo Fayose wept profusely while vacating the state’s number-one seat. Fayose shed tears shortly after attending a thanksgiving service to mark the end of his tenure held at the Government House chapel. The governor betrayed emotion as he made for his official vehicle on his way to catching a flight at the Akure Airport. He was believed to be on his way to Abuja in readiness for an appearance at the head office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). As the thanksgiving service ended at about 11.00 am, tears had welled up in the eyes of the governor who sauntered towards his Lexus SUV. His wife, Feyisetan, who sensed that her husband was weeping, moved closer to him and consoled him. The outgoing first lady was heard saying “please take heart, please take heart.” After being consoled by his wife, Fayose bade farewell to few aides and other admirers who were watching the drama. Fayose’s voice was laden with emotion as he addressed the congregation. The outgoing governor said he was leaving the state number-one seat a contented man. Fayose said: “I’m contented, I’m happy and I say thank you. Don’t be disparaged, don’t worry about me, I will come back. I will rise to the glory of God. I have enjoyed uncommon grace; I will never complain but thank God.” Mrs. Fayose assured that her husband would come back to Ekiti a triumphant man. She said: “We are coming back, I don’t know how but I have 200 per cent assurances.” In his sermon entitled, “Affliction shall not rise the second time,” the Chaplain of Government House, Pastor Seyi Olusola, said a man must be ready to face affliction, if he must rise. Olusola said: “Don’t allow anything to trouble your mind, always come to God.” As he left the Government House premises, Fayose displayed a wooden board with the inscription “Ekiti Kete, thank you all and good bye.” The thanksgiving service was attended by traditional rulers led by the Chairman of Ekiti State Council of Obas and Oloye of Oye-Ekiti, Oba Oluwole Ademolaju and the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe. The Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has explained that he may not honour invitation to attend the inauguration of Dr. Kayode Fayemi because of the erratic nature of politicians. The Governor added that he had promised to appear at the office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) on October 16, which he said coincided with day of the swearing in. The governor also advised that whoever emerges Speaker in the state House of Assembly should work for the progress of the state. Fayemi had on Wednesday disclosed that Fayose was specially being expected at his swearing in on Tuesday, saying he is free to attend the ceremony as Ekiti leader. Speaking at a press conference in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, Fayose said the EFCC may have the opportunity of harassing him if he reneged on his promise to appear before it next Tuesday. “Politicians are erratic people, if I should attend the programme, some politicians may use the chance to harass me even when they are not sent by Fayemi. “This will further destroy relationship. Issues between me and Fayemi is not personal. I have been cooperating with the committee set up by Fayemi on this transition “Again, I have to be in EFCC office in Abuja on Tuesday. But let me say clearly that I am ready to appear before any Panel set up by incoming government to probe my administration”, he said. Fayose stated that he has not committed Ekiti to any debt, either by way of bond or bank loans since he took over in 2014. “Contrary to what they are saying that I have committed Ekiti to a huge debt, I didn’t commit Ekiti with a dime. Whatever we do in government, history will forever remain after us”. He urged Fayemi to deploy the N327 million kept in bank by his administration to complete the new Oja Oba market for the use of Ekiti traders. The Governor added that he decided to abandon the civic centre project started by Fayemi and constructed a new market because it was not a priority to the people of the state. Fayose said the newly built Ministry of Finance shall be named after former Minister of National Planning, Chief Ayo Ogunlade to appreciate his contributions to the state. The governor said he decided not to name any project after himself on the basis of his belief that such was morally wrong. “The flyover, the new governor’s office, the roads, the Oja Oba market, the Funmilayo Olayinka Women development centre and other projects will speak for me even if I refuse to name projects after myself,” he said. Fayose said he won’t dabble into the crisis rocking the State Assembly, which culminated in the removal of the Speaker, Hon Kola Oluwawole and his deputy, Sina Animasaun on Thursday. Three All Progressives Congress (APC) and 11 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday removed the principal officers and installed an APC lawmaker, Hon Adeniran Alagbada, as the new Speaker. Fayose said: “I won’t dabble into what is happening in the assembly. Whether they elect Oluwawole or Alagbada, such person must believe that he was elected to serve Ekiti people. “I enjoin them to cooperate with Fayemi to move Ekiti forward. I don’t want to hear of any impeachment against Fayemi, if truly we are here to serve”, he advised. https://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/10/why-i-wont-attend-fayemis-inauguration.html

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) are at loggerheads over the just concluded primary elections in states to field candidates for 2019 general polls. The commission said there were no primary elections in Zamfara state and therefore it has barred the APC from presenting candidates in the 2019 general election for failing to conduct primaries into the office of the governor, Senatorial, House of Representatives and the State House of Assembly seats in the state. But the governing party insisted yesterday that primaries were held between 6 and 7 October at City King Hotel in Gusau where candidates were picked by consensus. In a leaked memo sent to the national chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomole, INEC said the party should not expect to send list of candidates for the office of governor, Senatorial, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly seats for Zamfara State to its headquarters. The memo noted that APC did not hold its primaries as scheduled, thus violating the provisions of Sections 87 and 31 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended). LEADERSHIP recalls that, while the commission had directed all political parties to conduct their primary elections between August 18 and October 7 2018, wrangling and infighting prevented the Zamfara State chapter of the APC from conducting their primaries. In the memo obtained by our correspondent yesterday, INEC said its officials were fully mobilised and deployed for the exercise but it did not take place. The memo signed by INEC’s acting Secretary, Okechukwu Ndeche, noted: “ Please refer to the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2019 general elections released by the commission on 9 January, 2018. You would note from the timetable that the conduct of party primaries is scheduled to take place between 18 August and 7 October 2018. “Kindly also refer to the last schedule communicated by your party to the commission on the date of party primaries nationwide, including Zamfara via your letter Ref APC/NHDQ/INEC/19/18/51 dated 3rd October 2018. “However, reports received from our office in Zamfara State show that no primaries were conducted by your party in the state, notwithstanding that our officials were fully mobilized and deployed”. According to the memo, “Consequently, based on the provisions of sections 87 and 31 of the electoral act 2010 (as amended), the commission does not expect that your party will summit names of any candidates from Zamfara State. “For clarity, our position, therefore, is that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not be fielding candidates for the governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly elections in Zamfara State for the 2019 general elections”. Confirming the authenticity of the memo sent to the national chairman of the APC, chief press secretary to INEC chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, acknowledged that the memo was sent by INEC to the APC national chairman. “It was a correspondence between the commission and the APC. It was leaked, obviously,” Oyekanmi said. We Fielded Persons For All Elective Positions, Oshiomhole Insists But hitting back at INEC, national chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, insisted that the party held governorship, National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly primaries in Zamfara State and will present candidates to the commission for the general election. Oshiomhole’s position was made known in a letter addressed to the INEC chairman, which he personally signed. In the letter, Oshiomole wondered why INEC did not write such a letter to the PDP in relation to Kano State when it was obvious that opposition party equally did not hold primaries in Kano. The letter was made public few hours after the letter from the acting secretary of INEC, Okechukwu Ndeche, accusing the APC of not conducting primaries within the timeframe stipulated by the electoral body was leaked. Debunking the basis of INEC’s official letter that no primary held in Zamfara, Oshiomhole said, “We wish to state emphatically that nothing can be farther from the actual situation in Zamfara State”. Attaching the report of the Zamfara Electoral Committee to his memo, Oshiomhole said the primaries were held between 6 and 7 October at City King Hotel in Gusau and that the candidates were arrived at by consensus. He stated: “Please also refer to INEC’s Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2019 General Elections released by the Commission on the 9th of January, 2018. By that timetable all political parties are expected to submit a list of their candidates on or before 18th of October 2018, after exhausting all internal procedures for Appeals arising out of the congress. “As a party, we are in the process of exhausting those internal procedures before forwarding the names of our candidates to you. We are perplexed that you did not wait for us to submit the names of our candidates in Zamfara State (considering that the time within which such submission should take place has not elapsed) before raising your observation in your letter under reference. “This is more so when we received no correspondence from the commission at least to inquire from our party the true state of affairs in Zamfara State. We, however, note that the Peoples Democratic Party did not also hold primaries in Kano, but no such letter was written to the PDP in relation to Kano State. The APC national chairman continued: “It is our contention, in the circumstance, that your letter is not only preemptive, but your position seem to negate the spirit of any fair hearing and is devoid of legal basis. “Be informed that in the spirit of due compliance with the law, we affirm that we shall indeed be presenting candidates for Governorship, National Assembly and State of Assembly Elections in Zamfara State for the 2019 general elections before the deadline for submission of such names, which has been fixed by your commission on the 18th of October, 2018 and in line with section 87 96) of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended). ‘If you raise further observations after you receive our list of candidates, we shall be glad to clarify them”. PMB, APC Govs Meet To Mend Fences Meanwhile, governors elected on the platform of the APC yesterday met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa to discuss issues of reconciliation after the controversy that trailed the conduct of the party’s primaries nationwide. The governors led by the progressive forum chairman and Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, said the party is seeking reconciliation of all aggrieved members. Speaking to State House correspondents after the meeting with the president, Okorocha said the APC cannot afford to go into the general election as a divided party. He expressed optimism that most of the crisis will soon be resolved, noting that there would be no more defections from the party. The governor said, “We have also looked at issues concerning our primaries. In every democracy, expect some kind of disagreements and we have kindly requested that something be done to bring all warring factions together so we can have a united party to face the challenges ahead and we are happy that that will soon take place. “Most of the problems have been resolved except for one or two states where we have issues. Where it becomes more difficult, we asked for Mr President’s intervention in the matter. On what the governors are specifically asking for, he said, “Reconciliation. What is important to us is that we must not go into this battle a divided family and we want to make sure that all governors are intact, all National Assembly members are intact, while going into this battle. We will never speak differently; we will speak as united leaders of the party. On the crisis in Zamfara State, Okorocha said, “Zamfara is one of the issues we have raised also”. He also dismissed insinuations that the party is jittery over the emergence of former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, as the presidential candidate of the PDP. He said, “I don’t know about talking tough. We can’t be jittery. History is there to speak, history is very important. Like I said, we are not going to get involved in this verbal war with anybody. We will be talking about issues. “If you say, ‘look you are not good’, we will tell you what we can do and what we cannot do and what others cannot do. So, APC is not going to engage in that kind of talk show, but we will discuss on what our party can do for the people”. https://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/10/2019-apc-inec-at-war-over-zamfara.html

UK chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has made the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari easier. Mr Ade Omole, leader of APC UK made the assertion in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Monday in Abuja. According to him, President Buhari remains the best candidate for the 2019 presidential election among the array of presidential candidates being paraded by other political parties. He maintained that Atiku’s candidature would not stop the victory of the APC. “The task for 2019 election has just been made easier by the leading opposition party by electing a presidential candidate who was part of the country’s problem in the 16 years of PDP rule. “Nigerians should be wise enough to know, therefore, that he has nothing new to bring to the table. “While I want Nigerians to vote wisely in 2019, I assure that as we did in 2015, we will work hard again to ensure that President Buhari is re-elected. “On behalf of Nigerians and the progressives in the Diaspora, I congratulate President Buhari for accepting his nomination to be the APC presidential candidate for 2019 election. `His election by over 14 million registered members of the party during the APC presidential primaries held across the federation speaks volumes,”Omole said. He further said that Nigerians in the Diaspora were delighted at the enormous recovery tasks undertaken by the Buhari-led administration in securing the country, growing the economy and curbing corruption within the polity. The leader of the APC UK chapter commended Buhari and his cabinet for laying the foundation for a better Nigeria. He however urged APC members across the world not to be distracted, but continue to work hard to ensure the party’s victory at all levels of government in 2019. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Buhari scored a total of 14,842,072 votes at the party’s recent direct primaries held in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to pick the APC presidential ticket. His candidacy was affirmed by 7,000 delegates from 36 states of the federation and the FCT at the APC National Presidential Convention on Saturday. Aside the statutory delegates, three delegates were drawn from 774 Local Government Area of the 36 states of the federation and the FCT, who got elected at the party’s Congresses held earlier. NAN further reports that Atiku, a former Vice President beat 11 contestants to secure the PDP ticket with 1,532 votes during the party’s presidential primaries held in Port Harcourt. A total of 3,274 delegates participated in the election, with his closest challenger, Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, having just 693 votes. Other presidential candidates seeking to upstage Buhari include, Mr Donald Duke of Social Democratic Party (SDP), Dr Oby Ezekwesili of Allied Congress Party of Nigeria among others. Forum of Chapter Leaders of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People ((MOSOP) recently embarked on a protest calling for a change in the leadership of the Movement. The Forum is alarmed that although the tenure of the present headship of MOSOP ends on December 31, 2018, the leadership has not made any move to call for elections but instead, the president, Legborsi Pyagbara, has opted to frustrate the conduct of elections in order to possibly elongate his tenure. A statement issued on Thursday by MOSOP Chapter Leaders, signed on behalf of the Forum by Chief Sunday Ndee; Comrade Bakor Bob Maxwell; Comrade Nnah Barikor; Comrade Gbenenee Friday; Comrade Doneh Dum Foster; Chief Engr. Friday S. Eedee; and Pastor Obidiah Ade-e Baah said that as demanded by the constitution, elections should be conducted to usher in a new leadership,” adding, “unfortunately this has not been done.” “Today, we embark on this very peaceful and public protest to draw attention to the precarious and unacceptable situation within the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People where the current leadership under Legborsi Saro Pyagbara has attempted to turn tyrannical and disregard the constitution of MOSOP and its democratic principles. “We as the chapter leaders of MOSOP, representing over 200 Ogoni communities and coordinators of the activities of MOSOP in all Ogoni villages, do hereby condemn this move and call for the election processes to commence immediately. “We affirm our commitment and determination to protect the constitution of MOSOP and to advance the rights of the Ogoni people as demanded in the Ogoni Bill of Rights,” the Forum noted. It warned, “If within three days from today, an electoral committee is not constituted by the Steering Committee, we will take further peaceful steps to protect our rights to choose our leaders.” “We thank you and urge you all to continue to stand by us and our people as we move to ensure that the sacrifices of our martyrs do not go in vain,” the chapter leaders declared. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/10/chapter-leaders-demand-for-new.html

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos State chapter, has said the emergence of Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) would facilitate a seamless victory for the PDP in the 2019 governorship election in the state. Speaking to in an interview with Daily Independent newspaper, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Gani Taofik said the PDP would beat Sanwo-Olu and the APC black and blue. He added that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the APC, rejected the incumbent governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, for a second term in office because of alleged disagreement in the sharing of the state’s resources. He said: “We don’t see Sanwo-Olu as a threat at all in the forthcoming governorship election. In fact, we will beat him and the APC black and blue. Our candidate will win him hands down because we know that the only reason why he has been presented is to be used as a conduit pipe to syphon Lagos money. “It is obvious and in the public domain that the disagreement between Tinubu and Ambode is because of the sharing of Lagos resources. While one insisted that he must continue to get his percentage, the other said that it cannot continue and he wants development. “So, I think Sanwo-Olu’s emergence has made our job very easy. We will beat him black and blue.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/10/lagos-2019-well-beat-sanwo-olu-black.html

According to the spokesperson of the aspirants, Mr Audu Akange, they agreed to allow Jime fly the party’s flag in order to face Governor Samuel Ortom who emerged the PDP’s governorship candidate. Jime in his acceptance speech thanked the party members for choosing him as the consensus candidate and therefore, called for their support to help him win the election. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/10/buharis-appointee-jime-emerges-apc.html

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians that he will continue to work “tirelessly to promote, protect and preserve what really matters in Nigeria. Buhari gave the assurance during his nationwide broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 58 Independence. The President said he will work towards a “united, peaceful, prosperous and secure Nigeria, where all, irrespective of background, can aspire to succeed.” He said, “Fellow Nigerians, “Now we have in our hands technology that is a powerful tool that we can and should use for knowledge and understanding. As with other countries, we must also learn how to manage those tendencies that, instead, look to abuse new technologies to provoke passions and stir tensions. “Never before have we faced such a challenge. We must all rise to the responsibility of shutting out those disruptive and corrosive forces that hide in today ’s world of social media. We need critical minds and independent thinking, to question and question until we are satisfied we have the facts. Otherwise, all the progress we have made as a democracy since 1999 is at stake. “I have committed myself many times to ensure that elections are fully participatory, free and fair and that the Independent National Electoral Commission will be exactly INDEPENDENT and properly staffed and resourced. The ballot box is how we make our choice for the governments that rule in our name. “Fellow Nigerians, “Developing a thriving democracy is not an easy task. There can be no quick fixes or shortcuts. These are the most important lessons that we have learnt in our 58 years as an independent nation. “At the international level, we remain a responsible and respected member of the international community, playing active positive roles within ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations as well as all other regional and international organisations and institutions of which we are members. “We will continue to support initiatives aimed at addressing the challenges of our times: global and regional crises and conflicts, terrorism, trans-border crime, climate change, human rights, gender equality, development, poverty and inequality within and between nations, etc. In this context, we are working hard to achieve both the AU 2063 Agenda for socio-economic transformation of our continent; and the UN 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, which together aim at addressing these challenges “Fellow Nigerians, “As we celebrate the 58th Anniversary of our independence, we know we are on the right path. Although we have our differences, they count for far less than the values, virtues and common aspirations that unite us as a nation. We have so much for which we should be grateful, and in which we should rightly take pride. Our journey is not finished but we have come a long way. “I want to assure you that as President, I will continue to work tirelessly to promote, protect and preserve what really matters: a united, peaceful, prosperous and secure Nigeria, where all, irrespective of background, can aspire to succeed.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/10/nigeria-at-58-why-i-will-continue-to.html

The Nigeria Police Force have explained why their personnel restricted some voters from accessing the polling units where Thursday’s Osun governorship rerun election took place. Ali Janga, a Commissioner of Police, who is superintending over the force operations in Orolu Local Government Area of the state, told newsmen that voters prevented from polling units were those whose polling units were not involved in the rerun election. “We check people for their voters’ cards and ensure that they are registered to vote in any of the three polling units in Orolu LGA before we let them pass. The polling unit has been written on the card. “If your unit is not in any of these places we will ask you to go back ,” he said. Janga also debunked reports that police officers arrested observers and journalists, noting that the circulation of such information was the handiwork of politicians. “Nobody was arrested by the police. People are feeding out false information sponsored by politicians”, the Police Commissioner added. INEC had earlier said it would address all issues concerning the purported arrest and harassment of observers with the security agencies. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/09/osun-rerun-why-some-voters-were-blocked.html

Popular singer, David Adeleke, also known as Davido, has reacted to the announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declaring the just-concluded governorship election in Osun State inconclusive. Davido’s uncle, Ademola Adeleke is the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate in the election. INEC said Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, polled about 254,698 ahead of Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who garnered 254,345 votes. This decision followed cancellation of votes in Orolu Local Government, Ife South LG, Ife North LG and Osogbo LG resulting. However, reacting, Davido who had earlier raised the alarm that INEC planned to declare the election as inconclusive because there were cancellations and violence in some polling units, assured that there would be victory at last. “Remove justice, and what are kingdoms but gangs of criminals on a large scale” – St Augustine of Hippo Curiously, even though the Nigerian ‘kingdom’ never existed in the times of St Augustine of Hippo and many other philosophers of his period, the above timeless expression of the great philosopher appears to vividly describe the experiences in the Nigerian political landscape over the years but more obtrusively , in recent years as we traverse the journey of nationhood. Today, except for a few, I say a few political gladiators in the past and currently whose contributions to national development could be classified as modest, the Nigerian political space since its creation deliberately as a mere ‘geographical expression’ by the British warlords has been dominated by charlatans and gangs of criminals whose main pre-occupation is the appropriation of the collective commonwealth to satisfy their egocentric interests while the citizenry wallow in poverty of monumental dimensions. If anybody doubts this ‘subjective’ perception about the realities of the Nigerian project, then such a person should either take a mental appraisal of the social-economic state of the system or take a round-trip journey across the country and assess, dispassionately, the level of suffering in the land. As the journey towards the 2019 elections continues to take shape, the ‘hawks’ are at it again, mobilizing all the lethal resources at their disposal to hack down real and imagined enemies that might want to debar them from consolidating on their past ‘loots’ and by implication, perpetuating the servile or beggarly livelihoods of the people. As we speak now, the victims are already falling as the vicious battles of survival of the fittest in the battlefield of political anomie become more ferocious and life-snuffing. These battles are usually between a few conscionable leaders who desire transformational changes in the polity for better lives for the citizenry and the majority parasitic leaders who, over the years, have represented the locusts of the political ‘farmland’ and who, as Karl Marx has observed, symbolize the exploiters of the masses. On the list of these few soldiers of conscience, whose interests are in the improvement of the lots of the people are the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and now the Emir of Kano, His Imperial Majesty, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, a former Minister of Education, Dr. Obi Ezekwezili, a former Minister of Finance and quintessential technocrat, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and the immediate past Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun. Others may exist but these few symbolize the best models anyone could point to when it comes to visionary leadership and agents of socio-economic transformation in a nation bleeding from the heartless exploitation of its resources by very few but politically dominant unconscionable leaders spread across the geo-political zones. As experiences have shown over the years, the ferocity of the war for political gains that have characterized the Nigerian landscape for decades has always been that those who genuinely desire to serve are always ‘consumed,’ leaving them in most cases, worse emotionally and psychologically than before they offer themselves for national service. If anyone is in doubt, then engage the Sanusis, Okonjo-Iwealas and now, Mrs. Adeosun to recount their political service experiences. Now let us talk about the Adeosun saga. Oluwakemi Adeosun, a few days ago had thrown in her letter of resignation in a hurry as months of vitriolic attacks on her personality for an excusable ‘offence’ of possessing a forged NYSC exemption certificate were taking too much and appear so asphyxiating as to snuff life out of her. So much has been chronicled in recent days about the NYSC exemption certificate forgery saga on the pages of newspapers and other media of communication, particularly the social media, and as to why it should be a basis for why the minister should disembark from the 2019 electioneering campaign locomotive, despite the fact that her ‘boarding ticket’ remains valid to get to the political destination by May 2019, the end of the tenure for the President Muhammadu Buhari-led four years administration. As a dispassionate observer of the travails of Mrs. Adeosun over the past weeks and based on the contents of her letter of resignation made public by the Presidency, one could not but be emotionally and psychologically sympathetic to her cause, despite her failings to understand how the Nigerian project is being ‘executed’ by those that have mortgaged the future of the country in their exploitative, uncompromising and predatory holds on power for decades. As expected in a country that has been turned to a spectre of crippling socio-economic anarchy and a reigning culture of impunity, weeks before her departure had seen Mrs. Adeosun vilified, criticized and even condemned by some ‘analysts’, who are ostensibly acting the scripts of some political hirers, through distorted, myopic, warped and blind viewpoints that lack all elements of logical, moral, or even legal reasoning. Agreed, Mrs. Adeosun made a big mistake by trusting some ‘associates’ to help her process her application at the NYSC headquarters. But what is certain is that based on her upbringing and over 30 years of orientation in an environment that is run purely on transparency, accountability, justice and forthright virtues, the former minister could not have intentionally, genuinely and deliberately elect to take the ignoble course of procuring a fake document. Now, stretching this opinionated argument further one feels that having trusted her ‘associates’ so much to help her process the NYSC exemption certificate, she could not have upon collection of the certificate from the NYSC office begin to verify whether the signature on the certificate was genuine or fake. Let me illustrate here. To many who are chanting ‘crucify’ her, I doubt if any of them could not have fallen into the pit of betrayal as Oluwakemi did. The experiences at all levels of public governance in Nigeria show clearly that as applicants, the moment approvals are granted to our requests or certificates issued to us by any public institution in Nigeria, nobody gets pre-occupied with verifying that who actually signed the document is the genuine person. For God sake, how can any applicant be concerned with the signature of who signed a document become the pre-occupation of an applicant who has gone through weeks or months of harrowing experiences to get any document? Let us be fair and just in our views on the Adeosun saga. To me, she is primarily a victim of the ‘Nigerian factor’ which, for decades, has made Nigeria a big nation with clueless political leaders, who after travelling and seeing what obtains in saner climes, have failed to imbibe the culture of good governance and selfless service to their fatherland.. For instance, if the former minister were to apply for the same certificate in the UK or U.S, she can complete all the processes electronically and appear for collection personally only when the certificate is ready. That is where institutions and structures are put in place to drive public governance and accountability in leadership. A cursory appraisal of Mrs. Adeosun’s brief sojourn in the nation’s landscape with a view to assessing how she fared reflected a woman who gave all and sacrificed so much to reserve the seething decay in the nation’s public finance system. In the short span of her tenure, Mrs. Adeosun has demonstrated an uncanny sense of patriotism, like her immediate predecessor, sense of discipline, and professional competences in the discharge her responsibilities. She has, within the context of the political settings, consolidated on the achievements recorded by Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, in all facets of the nation’s fiscal and monetary policy regimes and by so doing, opened the economy up for improved private sector investments. This is even when the nation’s revenue earnings from the oil sector remained at the lowest ebb ever. Remarkably, some of the minister’s achievements which no political bad blood and hatred can rubbish in a hurry include the establishment of an Efficiency Unit (E-Unit) to monitor the Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government (MDAs) for the purposes of checking leakages in the public finance system, the introduction of a Whistleblower Policy, the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS). – Abubakar sent in this piece from Zaria, Kaduna State Others include, the insistence that all MDAs and revenue collecting agencies comply with the Treasury Single Account (TSA) rules, the financial bail-outs for states, initiative on continuous audit of MDAs, Payment of Inherited Pension Arrears, establishment of the Development Bank of Nigeria, the launching of the Asset Tracking and Management Project (ATM Project), establishment of the Road Trust Fund (RTF), introduction of the Fiscal Sustainability Plans and Budget Support Facility for States of the Federation, amongst others. Whao! What these initiatives show is that Mrs. Adeosun, despite her relatively young age and reticence, exhibited the technocratic, professional skills required to deliver on her mandate. Some have said that Nigeria borrowed so much to keep the government running under her watch. The question is: Could the government have done otherwise in the face of dwindling resources and irrepressible desire to transform lives? The truth is that even the blind can feel the infrastructure projects of the government across geo-political zones as the war against graft in public sector garners traction and predators of the economy now groan helplessly in subdued tones. Rather than joining the crowd calling for Mrs. Adeosun’s head and prosecution over an error of judgment that even Socrates could have made in the same debased political system, I elect to stand on the side of the few that feel she deserves commendations for sacrificing all she had to contribute to the nation’s development agenda. She has done exceedingly well under the President Buhari-led administration by serving diligently her fatherland in the last few years, and because she has not mortgaged her conscience in the midst of the raging anomie that has characterized the political landscape in recent months, Mrs. Adeosun deserves to be celebrated and not prosecuted! As a commentator has observed, the point is that the former Minister could not have avoided stepping on some ‘powerful’ toes in her crusade to transform the public finance system. The truth about the latest experiences of Mrs. Adeosun before she finally ‘took a bow’ and resigned her appointment a few days ago and which all of us should learn from is that in the on Nigerian political system, no matter how conscientious you may be as a political leader or public servant, there will always be people who are seeking your downfall. As Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala made it clear in her recent book ‘Fighting Corruption is Dangerous: The Story Behind the Headlines’ which reflect her experiences in political leadership as two-time minister in the country, the Adeosun’s saga has validated, once again, her predecessor’s position that it is dangerous to fight corruption in Nigeria. In fact, it is deadly! Let me say as I end this piece that Mrs. Adeosun left with many of us, who could interpret fairly the language of the polity, holding her in high esteem for leaving ‘a comfort zone’ to serve a fatherland that hardly rewards its genuine labourers. On a final note, I think it is also appropriate for me to make it clear also that all through her tenure in office or before then, I have neither met Mrs. Adeosun in person in life nor benefitted either in cash on in kind from all her initiatives. Abubakar sent in this piece from Zaria, Kaduna State – Usmanu write from Bauchi http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/09/adeosun-deserves-commendation-not.html

When Ciara released ‘Freak Me’, her Tekno-assisted single, all hell broke loose on Nigerian social media over alleged song theft and unapproved sampling of Tiwa Savage’s ‘Before Nko’. But addressing the matter plainly for the first time, the Nigerian superstar says she had foreknowledge of the sampling. Savage said her representatives spoke to Ciara’s camp, inferring that they reached an understanding on the usage of the song. In an interview with Capital Xtra’s Tim Westwood, Savage described ‘Freak Me’ as a pleasant surprise. She said: “It’s amazing. It’s an honour. I knew she was going to sample the record. “Her people had spoken to my people but I didn’t hear the final product until it came out but it was a pleasant surprise. Big shout out to her.” Savage also spoke about her upcoming collaboration with Coldplay, and how it came to be. She said: “They have a record with Stargate and it kinda has like an Afrobeat influence in it and I already worked with Stargate on a couple of records, so they wanted a female vocal on it, so here I am. “When I was in the studio with Chris Martin, he was so cool. I was so nervous. He made it so easy.” The singer said her collaboration with Duncan Mighty, ‘Lova Lova’, is currently her favourite song, adding that “I knew it was a big record when I recorded it”. The Afrobeats star also touched on the inequality suffered by women in the music industry, noting that it is not limited to Nigeria. “I think it’s all over the world actually. I have heard other female acts from America, the UK talk about how hard it is,” Savage said. She said songs by male artistes find quick acceptance on the radio as opposed to those recorded by female singers. “I think it’s a lot easier to accept male artist’s songs,” the ‘All Over’ singer said. “On radio, it gets played quicker. Sometimes, I feel like some records when I have male artistes on it, is accepted a lot quicker.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/09/tiwa-savage-shuts-down-song-theft-talk.html
