National Chairman of the Labour Party Dr Mike Omotoso on Thursday said the party will deliver about 16 million votes to President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 elections.

Dr Omotoso, 2015 governorship candidate of the party said this on Thursday in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital at the launch of canvassers for President Buhari’s reelection in next year presidential election.

Earlier, Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed hinted that the president’s reelection would be boosted by no less than 16 million votes through the administration’s feeding programme for school pupils.

The Labour Party chairman said the party was on discussion with the All progressives Congress (APC).

He added that the time to salvage the time from one man’s rule is now, assuring that the party would deliver workers’ votes to the president.

He added that “no man is God. This is the time to bail our people out of the political bondage.”

“However, our terms with APC must align with the ideals of the workers, as the party is that of the downtrodden and the masses,” he said.

Also speaking interim Caretaker chair of APC in the state Hon Bashir Bolarinwa urged all to sincerely queue behind Alhaji Lai Mohammed as he is the current leader of the party in the state.

He added that “with that we capture power from a hegemony that had over the years held us hostage.

“We must not allowed ourselves to be deceived by the blackmails and lies against President Muhammadu Buhari against his reelection.

Prophets are not respected in their homes. What happened in 1985 when he was overthrown must not happen in 2019.”...Read More Here

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved the immediate recommencement of the Continuous Nationwide Membership Registration exercise in all 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Yekini Nabena, APC National Publicity Secretary, said this in a statement on Wednesday.

He said the decision followed calls from members of the public interested in joining the party, “to support the Change Agenda of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration”.

“The exercise will include both fresh registrations and revalidation of existing membership for the purposes of issuance of the Party’s permanent membership cards.

“We hereby urge our teeming supporters and members to take advantage of the exercise”, the statement added.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, at the Presidential Villa, had a closed-door meeting with service chiefs.

The President proceeded to Daura, Kastina State, for Eid-el-Kabir celebration shortly afterwards.

Speaking with State House correspondents after the meeting, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Maj. Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin, said the essence of the meeting was to review the security situation in the country.

He said that the meeting focused mainly on the situation in Benue, Zamfara and Taraba States.

“We just had two and half hour meeting with the President and Commander in Chief, we reviewed the security situation across the country in all the geopolitical zones”, NAN quoted him as saying.

“We made all our comments; especially the new operations in Benue, Zamfara, Taraba, Operation Whirlstroke and Operation Saradaji.

“We gave the extent of successes in these operations and we are to continue in this line of action in these operations.

“All the operations were reviewed and all the issues concerning the operations were dealt with.

“He directed that we should continue to step up our game to ensure that the nation is safe and people go about their daily activities in a very safe manner,’’ he said.

On his part, the Minister of Defence, Dan Ali Monsur, said the meeting was a normal routine security briefing with the president.

He said it was an update on what transpired when the President was away.

“We have seen that there is a lot of improvement in the security situation in the country, especially in Zamfara and Benue States and in the Niger Delta.

“In the North-East, we are having a worrisome report; we have looked into it critically and we have taken an absolute decision,’’ he said.

Other service chiefs in attendance were Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Theophilus Buratai, Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ebok Ibas and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

Also in attendance were the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, the National Security Adviser, Rtd. Maj.-Gen. President Muhammadu Buhari has this Monday afternoon, departed FCT Abuja to celebrate this year’s Eid-el Kabir with his kinsmen in his home town.

According to a disclosure by Bashir Ahmad, the presidential adviser on new media, President Muhammadu Buhari is billed to celebrate this year’s Eid-el Kabir with his kinsmen in his home town, Daura, Katsina State on Tuesday.

Bashir revealed in a tweet on social media that the President on Monday, left Abuja for the purpose, adding that his convoy left the forecourt of the Presidential Villa, Abuja for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at about 3.06pm.

The president left the federal capital, Abuja, shortly after meeting with the nation’s security chiefs during which he directed them to step up their game in order to make the country safer.

Some top government officials including his Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari; the National Security Officer, Babagana Monguno; and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, saw Buhari off as he left for his hometown.

The President is expected back in Abuja after the Sallah break.

The Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Sunday condemned the demolition of Yinka Ayefele’s Music House which houses his Fresh FM 105.9 radio station.

A statement jointly signed by the council’s chairman, Adewunmi Faniran, and the secretary, Mr Bola Ogunlayi, said it was highly disturbed that the building was demolished when the matter was before a court of competent jurisdiction.

DAILY POST reports that the building belonging to the popular musician was demolished in the early hours of Sunday by the state government for allegedly contravening its town planning laws.

Reacting, the council expressed concern over the fate of journalists and other media workers in the establishment as well as the loss suffered by the owner of the broadcast outfit.

The statement reads in part, “As the fourth estate of the realm and believer in the rule of law, the Oyo State NUJ expects that the court would have been left to take a definite decision on the issue of demolition before it was carried out.

“The state government should ensure that it comes to the aid of Fresh FM which has been a pride of Ibadan in particular and Oyo State.’’

The council urged the government to relocate the station to another site and ensure the smooth take-off of its operations.

A Nigerian man identified as for Friday Uko, has been sentenced to death by hanging for killing his pregnant wife, Patience Uko.

The Nigerian who reportedly pushed his 3-month-old pregnant wife, Patience, on the 14th August, 2014, because she took N1000 from his pocket and used it to cook food for their seven children, was handed the death sentence by an Akwa Ibom State High Court, sitting in Ikot Ekpene after Justice Ntong Ntong found him guilty of the crime.

“The accused pushed his wife down having known that she was pregnant and that he ought to know that a pregnant woman ought to be pampered and treated with love and not violence.
“The case is straightforward and that the accused had told the court through his extrajudicial statement that he caused the death of his wife by kicking her because of misunderstanding over N1,000. Anyone who unlawfully kills another is entitled to face the law,”
the judge held.

While the convict whose lawyer was not available to defend him pleaded for mercy to enable him to go home and take care of his children, the Judge held on to Uko being hanged until he his confirmed dead.

Publicist for Aretha Franklin says the Queen of Soul died Thursday at her home in Detroit, according to AP.

Aretha Franklin, the musical force who earned herself the title of Queen of Soul by belting out anthems like “Respect” and “Chain of Fools” — has died.

Franklin had dealt with undisclosed health issues that had kept her off stage in recent months. In March of 2018, she canceled a pair of scheduled concerts in due to what her management described as doctor’s orders. In subsequent months, she canceled scheduled performances in Boston and Toronto with management again saying that her doctors had told her to “stay off the road and rest completely.”

At one of her last public performances, in June 2017, she closed out a free concert in her hometown of Detroit with the message: “God bless you, God keep you, keep me in your prayers.”

Born in Memphis but raised in Detroit, Franklin began singing in church as a youngster – her father was a Baptist minister – and during her lifetime crossed multiple music lines. Known for her soul recordings, she also shone at R&B, jazz, blues and gospel music and was a songwriter and pianist as well as a singer.

Over the course of her career Franklin received multiple honors, including The National Medal of Arts and The Presidential Medal of Freedom.

In January 2009, she sang “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” at the inauguration of President Barack Obama and her much-commented-on, oversized gray bow hat subsequently made its way to the Smithsonian Museum.

Franklin was born March 25, 1942 to Rev. C. L Franklin and his wife Barbara, but her parents split shortly after moving to Detroit when she was six. Her father was a popular preacher and she grew up with gospel greats like Albertina Walker and Mahalia Jackson visiting her home.

By 14, Franklin had released her first album, “Songs of Faith” and began touring on the gospel circuit until she became a teenage mother of two sons.

By 18, she had signed with Columbia Records and moved to New York, where her talents quickly brought her fame – and a title. In 1965, during a show, the M.C. gave her a crown and declared her the “Queen of Soul.”

Switching to the Atlantic label in 1967, Franklin’s second single was “Respect,” probably her most acclaimed work (the lyric “r-e-s-p-e-c-t, find out what it means to me” reportedly began as a Franklin ad-lib).

Other hits that followed included “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “Chain of Fools,” “Call Me,” and the 1972 gospel album “Amazing Grace.”

In all, she won 18 Grammy awards, beginning with Best Rhythm and Blues Recording for “Respect” in 1968 and ending with Best Gospel-Soul Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for “Never Gonna Break My Faith” with Mary J. Blige in 2008.

Franklin was married twice, to Ted White, who became her personal manager, and to actor Glynn Turman. She also had a seven-year relationship with her road manager, Ken Cunningham.

The Delta Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Mr Joyce Overah, says that 21 out of the 25 local governments in the state are still owing their workers months of unpaid salaries.

Overah disclosed this in Asaba on Wednesday while presenting the stewardship of his ministry in the last one year during a news conference.

He said that only four local government areas were not owing staff salaries.

He said that the rest were owing between one month and seven months’ of unpaid salaries.

The commissioner, however, did not mention those owing or those that were up to date in the payment of their workers’ salaries.

The commissioner said that the state government would settle the outstanding salaries of the local government workers from the next tranche of the Paris Club to be paid by the Federal Government.

He said that the state governor had also approved a committee of qualified accountants from the state Auditor-General’s office to determine the excess bank charges imposed on the council areas.

Overah said that the committee’s forensic audit would cover between 2007 and 2017.

He said that the committee was expected to submit a report which the state government would use to recover all wrongful bank charges imposed on the council areas with accrued interests.

There was panic in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital on Monday evening as another man was killed by unidentified gunmen in daylight.

The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) reports that the killing of the man, whose identity could not be immediately ascertained, came barely three days after a close ally of former Gov. Segun Oni, Mr. Bunmi Ojo was assassinated in the capital.

Witnesses said the man was shot at a junction close to the end of the newly constructed overhead bridge at the Okesa/Ojumose Area of the ancient town at about 5:30pm.

According to the witnesses, the victim, who was said to be a passenger on a commercial motorcycle, popularly called Okada, was allegedly pursued to the area where he was later killed by his assailants.

NAN learnt that the killers who also came to the scene on another Okada, ordered the operator of the commercial motorcycle conveying the victim to stop at the spot where he was killed and sped-off immediately they achieved their aim.

However, the assailants spared the operator of the Okada.

The body of the shot passenger had since been moved to an undisclosed hospital by sympathisers who felt he could still survive, as he bled profusely.

The incident led to sudden closure of many shops in and around the Bisi Market located close to the area by their owners, even as many residents who either witnessed or got wind of the killing hurriedly left for their homes .

When contacted, the police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO) for the state command, DSP Caleb Ikechukwu told NAN that the command was yet to be briefed by the Divisional Police Officer, (DPO) of the Okesa Division.

He promised to speak on the attack as soon as he got information about the incident.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, has accused the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of behaving like a militant group.

Shehu said instead of following the democratic tenets in its activities on national issues, the opposition party was behaving like a militant group.

The Presidential spokesperson, who stated this while addressing newsmen in Abuja, also noted that the victory recorded by the All Progressives Congress, APC, at the National Assembly bye-elections in Katsina, Bauchi and Kogi States at the weekend was an indication of Buhari’s acceptance by Nigerians, which will be replicated in 2019.

Noting that each of the bye-elections was considered to be epic in nature, the Presidential spokesperson said the allegation of bribery for votes and vote-buying was a serious offence and that it was the duty of citizens who have evidence of such infractions to report to the appropriate quarters.

He said, “One is to say that bribery of voters or vote-buying is an offence in this country, I think that citizens who have evidence regarding this, have a duty to report to the law enforcement agencies, this is the way to help the country.

“Secondly I think that it is not the right attitude for a political party, a so-called opposition leader to conduct their affairs like a militant organization, a political party cannot be run like a militant organization, if you have disagreement on the outcome of an election, they know the process and they know it because they abused it before, you can see this is the clear difference of the kind of democracy the APC administration is trying to put in place from what they are used to.

“(Governor) Willie Obiano of Anambra, same afternoon he won election, president Buhari said congratulations and weldone, we were happy we came second in the elections, that is the way it is.

“We lost a Senate seat in Osun, we didn’t try to bring down the roof, and this that has happened in Cross River (bye election for state assembly), did you hear Adams Oshiomhole saying he wants to shoot people, I think this is the difference we need.

There was tension at the Maiduguri international airport in Borno state some hours ago as angry soldiers are shooting indiscriminately to protest their deployment from the state capital to another local government.

The aggrieved soldiers reportedly arrived at the airport at 6pm ahead of their posting to Marte local government area. But trouble started when they regrouped and refused to board the aircraft which ought to convey them there. The soldiers who are of the special forces said after spending over four years in Maiduguri, they ought to be sent back to their families and not to be posted to face death.

An officer who witnessed the incident said superior officers, including Bulami Biu, general officer commander (GOC) of 7 division, were asked to stay off the airport or risk being shot. “The second batch of pilgrims from Borno boarded their flight amid the commotion,” the source said. “The special forces are ready for trouble. They are really angry. The superiors were asked to stay off or be killed.”

Katsina State Government has commended the people of Katsina North Senatorial District for coming out massively to vote in the bye-election held on Saturday.

It said the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was a sign of success in the 2019 election.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s hometown, Daura is located in the Senatorial district.

The APC candidate, Ahmed Babba Kaita was declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), early on Sunday as the winner, scoring 224,607 votes, while his elder brother and a retired customs officer, Alhaji Kabir Babba-Kaita of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 59,724 votes.

Of the 855,092 registered voters, 308,500 were accredited at the 1825 voting points and 1577 polling units and 128 wards in the district, a huge turnout considering the apathy that had greeted past bye-elections in the country.

Speaking, Secretary to the Katsina State Government, Dr. Mustapha Inuwa, said the voter turnout was encouraging, especially considering the number of the accredited voters and the 294,050 people who cast their votes. He described the keenly contested election as peaceful.

Inuwa added that the result was proved that the APC was in full control of the state and added that the government appreciated the resilience and understanding exhibited by the electorate especially the party members.

The APC, Inuwa said, would emerge victorious in future elections, using the landslide victories recorded in Bauchi and Kogi states as proofs of the party’s popularity among Nigerians.

He said the APC led government under the leadership of Buhari is committed to salvaging the nation from the socio-economic and political predicament which the “moribund people’s Democratic Party (PDP)” left as legacy in its sixteen years of misrule.

A Nigerian man, Maigalisa Yohanna, and his bride, Danielle Villasana, on Saturday, August 4, 2018, surprised many of their guests after storming their wedding reception in a tricycle in Yola, Adamawa.

The duo met at the American University of Nigeria, where Danielle teaches Photography and Maigalisa is an IT expert.

The photographer, Seun who took the photos shared how it was a lovely surprise for the bride who had always wanted tiponride in a Keke Napep.

He wrote:

I have photographed quite a number of weddings but none has been this spontaneous and engaging.

The event planner @tiana_27 walked up to me just after the joining took place and said. ‘You need to be ready for a surprise that @maigalisa (Husband) has for his Bride @davillasana’. The order of photographs followed shortly after as we needed some time for @meetbobby1 to fetch the Keke (Tricycle). He made a grand entry as the bride was swept off her feet and marveled at the surprise.

Before this time, riding in a Keke had been a wish for Danielle and Maiga granted her this wish on the day they tied the knot where it all began. – –

Remains of the nine Corps members who drowned in River Salihu Dogo at Mayo Selbe in Gashaka Local Government Area of Taraba State last Sunday, were today, conveyed back to their various states for burial.

A cross section of Corps members converged at the Specialist Hospital, Jalingo to pay their last respect to the departed colleagues.

Sharing the photos today, one of the Corps member, Ezebuihe Charles, wrote:

“We came to taraba state together with the intention of going together but death took nine of you away from us. They obeyed the call to serve their fathers land not knowing that death was also calling. The news your drowning brought great shock to us. Death you have done your worst to us. Their families bid them fare well to serve their fathers land, now they are being brought home in lifeless state. To their families, may God grant you the grace to bear the lost and to our falling hero’s, may your souls find peace with God.”

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has said he gained admission into the university he attended in the United States without presenting his West African School Certificate Examination result.

Adeleke said this in Ede while reacting to the dismissal of the suit filed against his eligibility before Justice David Oladimeji of the Osun State High Court.

Adeleke, who was flanked by some of his mates at the Ede Muslim Grammar School, Ede said he was well known during his school days because he loved his schoolmates and loved sports.

The PDP candidate said he sat for a qualifying examination before he was given admission to the university.

He said, “We all went to school and we know that some results would not be released. But they may release the remaining results tomorrow. Who knows? After I sat for the exams, my mind was in the US. The university I attended did not need our qualification from here. I sat for their qualifying exam.”

He said he had been calling aspirants that contested with him for the PDP’s sole ticket and that he had held a meeting with Dr Akin Ogunbiyi in the presence of the National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus, and the national organising secretary of the party.

Adeleke said, “I chose to remain quiet since the conclusion of the governorship primary for two reasons; first it is my unchanged belief in party supremacy and utmost respect for the leadership of our great party.

“The second reason is because the issue of my qualification and eligibility as a governorship candidate has been a subject of litigation until yesterday. Now that a judicial pronouncement confirming my qualification and eligibility to contest has been made, the time is now right to speak on the matter.

“For the records, let me reiterate the obvious and easily verifiable fact that I attended the Ede Muslim Grammar School between 1979 and 1981, my schoolmates are everywhere, and some are even here with me. While in school, I was a lover of football, so I was very popular. I was elected the president of the alumni association of this same school until recently.”

He described those questioning his attendance at the school as “clearly being mischievous and deceptive.”

Adeleke added, “I also must express my gratitude to the judiciary for upholding the truth despite the pressure. It is now clear and proven that I did not forge any certificate or testimonial. In any case, how can I forge a testimonial that simply attests to the fact of my attendance at the school?”

Former Governor of Cross River, Donald Duke has said that there will be no peace in the Senate, until it is no longer “a retirement home for Governors”.

Duke stated this via his verified Twitter handle on Wednesday night.

“The Senate won’t find peace until former governors stop making it a retirement home,” he wrote.

His comments come hours after former Akwa Ibom Governor, Senator Godswill Akpabio, defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Akpabio said that he decided to join a party that would sweep away poverty and impunity.

“The country is at war and all the hands must be on deck to salvage the situation and not to aggravate it.

“As keepers of national emergency, everyone should put heads together. I decided to join to emancipate the people and provide succour for the people,” he said.

The General Overseer, Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, on Saturday’s night, said God had not revealed to him yet who his successor would be.

He stated this at the ongoing ministers’ conference of the mission holding at the Redemption Camp, Mowe, Ogun State. The four-day annual conference is expected to come to a close this evening while the 66th annual convention will start on Monday and last for six days.
RCCG is believed to be the biggest Pentecostal mission in Africa with branches in more than 100 countries around the world.

According to Pastor Adeboye, God has not told me about any successor at all, whether you believe it or not.

“Elijah knew before Elisha knew that he would succeed him, Moses also knew that Joshua would succeed him and likewise Eli knew before Samuel and not the other way round and therefore, God will tell me first before any other person about who will become my successor as a general overseer.

“So, those of you who are carrying rumour of who would be my successor or claiming to be the one that God had chosen should desist from such act as God had not shown me anybody yet.

”Some even said I would hand over to Bishop David Oyedepo, some said to Pastor Joe Olaiya because the two are very close to me that they do minister during our major events such as the conventions, Holy Ghost congresses and yet another quarter said one of my sons is the one succeeding me.

“But I would advice you to always check sources of your information before believing such information and also to focus on whatever you are doing rather than spreading rumour.

“So, let me say it loud and clear again that God has not told me who my successor is.

“What God had told me several years ago was that He would tell me who my successor would be at least five years before I would be called home and as at this now, He had not told me anything as regards that, which means He is not ready to call me home in the next five years.”

Pastor Adeboye, however, declared that he ‘pity’ who would eventually emerge as his successor because such a person would have to pray more than I do and has to sacrifice a lot also.

“Because I know how many hours I pray a day and I can count how many days I eat in a year too.

“So, whoever that will take over from me, such person will have to surpass me and God will have mercy on the person.”

The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), retired Col. Hameed Ali has approved the redeployment of 70 Comptrollers.

Ali announced this in a statement by the Service Public Relations Officer, Mr Joseph Attah, on Friday in Abuja.

Attah said “Among those affected were Comptrollers Abubakar Bashir, who moves from Port-Harcourt II (Onne) to Apapa; Musa Jibrin from Apapa to Human Resources Development.

“Comptroller Sa’idu Galadima who moves from Information Communication Technology (ICT) to Port-Harcourt Area II (Onne), while Comptroller, Mohammed Aliyu of Seme Command swapped positions with Comptroller Mohammed Garba of Federal Operations Unit Zone ‘A’ among others.

“The redeployment is to meet the challenges of fighting smuggling, revenue collection and trade facilitation.”

Attah said the CGC, while giving his approval for the redeployment, said the Federal Government policies on Agriculture, Economy and Security could only be successful with a strong, determined and patriotic Customs Service.

According to him, the CGC urged all affected officers to bring their experiences to bear in the new postings by fighting smugglers to standstill and collecting every collectable revenue.

“In the face of challenging security situation and increasing inclination to non-oil revenue drive, the service must step up to be counted as a necessary safety valve for national growth.

“The reshufflement is with immediate effect,” he added.
