@Kelokemamii tweeted; They shot a black man 5 times as he attempted to defend himself against a killer dog. the ambulance arrived to the scene, took the dog to the hospital & left his body laying there 8hrs. these officers were called to deescalate his PTSD episode. they killed him. this happened in Calgary. right here in Canada. a family lost their provider, a beautiful spirit, a father… a person, a human being. everybody, from the officers to the emergency responders, should be jailed. they murdered a black man & put a dog’s life above his. Alberta’s police watchdog says a man killed by Calgary officers was Tasered and hit with less-lethal projectiles from a launcher before two officers shot and killed him. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says Latjor Tuel was wielding a stick and a knife before charging at officers and a police dog. In less than 30 minutes after the arrival of police Saturday, a video of the shooting shared online showed Tuel, who was 41, lying motionless on the ground. Friends and family of Tuel, a Black man born in South Sudan, say he was mentally distressed, and they’ve drawn attention to systemic racism while criticizing police for what they consider an excessive use of force. Calgary police Chief Mark Neufeld says police officers responded rather than mental-health workers, because reports said Tuel had assaulted someone in the community. Calgary's Sudanese community is in mourning today after Calgary police shot and killed a Black man identified by community members as Latjor Tuel. Laying flowers close to the scene of the shooting near the area of 45th Street and 17th Avenue S.E. on Sunday afternoon, community members shared stories of Tuel. "We are saddened and heartbroken at the incident that happened yesterday," said Khor Top, president of the South Sudanese Community of Calgary. "We are here to mourn and to show the support for Latjor and the family." Members at the gathering remembered Tuel as a gentle and kind person who was a former child soldier from South Sudan. They said he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of that experience, along with other mental health issues. On Saturday, Calgary police said they had been called to the area shortly after 3:40 p.m. after hearing reports of a man believed to be in possession of weapons. Police said witnesses reported the man had assaulted a bystander and threatened others and alleged that the "man's actions led to officers discharging their service weapons." "Life-saving efforts were attempted, however, the man was pronounced deceased at the scene," police said in a release issued Saturday. The incident is now being investigated by Alberta's policing watchdog, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT). Several speakers refuted the police version of events, saying Tuel was “simply waiting for the bus” and the item police called a weapon was a retractable cane he used to help him walk due to issues with his knee. His reaction in hitting the dog, they said, was in self-defence and didn’t warrant his death. “I want to ask all of you here; (would you) stay and put your hands in your pockets when somebody’s unleashed a K-9 dog on you?” said Odame-Ankrah. “Naturally, you go into defence. It’s a natural human reaction.” Loved ones reiterated Tuel’s struggles with his mental health, referencing his PTSD and struggles in recent days. Regardless of his mental state, they say police had other options that wouldn’t have resulted in Tuel’s death.
