It is the best thing to do. Whatever negotiations will be had at this point will benefit Russia more than it would any other party involved in this situation.

They would be negotiating from a position of overwhelming strength over their adversary (Ukraine), seeing that NATO and US appear to have no appetite for kinetic involvement in the situation.

The endgame would be to install a puppet government in Kyiv, one very amenable to Russian fancies. The days ahead would be very interesting to watch.
