I think we getting serious gradually. It should not limited to state government but corporate bodies and individuals. |

jmoore:This logic is highly flawed. Electricity is very basic and states and businesses should be able to generate to meet their needs. Refineries are not nearly top on the list of things any state government should do. The rich states will be able to significantly improve their power supply if they're allowed to generate and distribute without impediments. E.g Lagos, Rivers, maybe Delta and some other ones too. 2 Likes |

jmoore: Building refineries are not like buying a concrete mixer, It takes time. The petroleum sector has been largely on the exclusive list for decades. It was only recently that licenses were made available and even then there was no legislative backing for private ownership till even more recently and it was only in the last year that NNPC's monopoly via the PIA was broken. But without the removal of subsidies there is still not marketplace for refined products in Nigeria. So the long road to private participation is the cause why more people have not ventured. The truth is that until subsidies go, there are no guarantees any investment will succeed. No one gambles with 15 billion.... except Dangote of course. 1 Like 1 Share |

seanfer: I doubt this very much. Except maybe to some huge industrial clusters that can take large amounts of electricty. Electricity is not like sim card you can just change your provider at any time. Even abroad where you can switch providers, its still only one distribution network everyone feeds into. 2 Likes |

elpee2015: The bill is still nor explicitly stated regarding the place where its been stated that, state will be "directly" responsible for the generation of their own electricity, or they will be responsible for transmission and distribution of electricity only. If going by what I read previously, in the assertion that we generate enough electricity, that only transmission and distribution is the problem. Then I believe that states should be responsible for the infrastructure for transmission of electricity, and also state should be handed the power to organise the distribution, by making sure more discos are set up for proper distribution, but this can only be possible, when the infrastructures are already in place. |

What would make sense is for Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti and Osun to come together under O'Odua group of companies to form a single Power generating company to deliver electricity to all the states. With 3 power plants in say Lagos, Ogun and Ondo, the electricity could feed into the main electricity receiving point for these states. That will likely be more cost effective than each state going it alone. 6 Likes 1 Share |

The thing is any state that the govr or at large, the leaders, are into Importing Generator sets, will find it very hard to make this work. Its a curse. Some Govrs need to see crazy. For now its just a seat that interest politicians and not cos they really want to help! |

daveP: I've never believed that those importing gens are stopping us from having electricity. We simply do not have electricity because we have an incompetent government and a corrupt one as well. Redemption Camp and Covenant University have some sort of turbine so i hear and they have 24hr electricity. Why did those importing gens not stop them? This is just the kind of thing we like to conjure up when we are looking for a reason as to why things do not work. 3 Likes |

How can you tell me that federal government will generate power and another private company will distribute meanwhile Discos don't have one pole. That this thread continued past the first page is the biggest surprise to me. I’ll come back in two to three years after seeing how things have improved. I planned to disappear to a developed country in the near future. If these clowns can deliver on twenty-four hour electricity for three hundred and sixty five days straight, I’ll change my mind or return if already outside. 2 Likes |

States to generate and distribute will give rise to competition, among states. It will reduce FG revenue generation and increase state revenue generation. The multiplicity of power generation and distribution will effect positively to the general public in price reduction, power availability and more power consumption. It's a welcome development. |

There are no laws stoping states from generating electricity. Thks bills is just a waste of time until I see it personally. Federal government don't stop State from generating power. |

COMPAQ:Was once like you on the SOT. Not that i say its a major reason, but that leaders that see the gain in that biz with default on providing basic electricity for their respective states. Personally, let each state handle their own generation especially if they have the hydro or etc in their domain. Then we’ll see how things change. But I’m not all that convinced. |
Re: What's Your Take On State Generating Their Electricity by gotnel: 11:41am On Mar 03, 2022 |
Parachoko: You are right. State governments will have new distribution companies in their localities. The best thing that will happen in the power generation and distribution sector is to allow states, even individuals who are buoyant enough to invest in the sector. If Nigeria can go ahead with this decision, it will be the best policy altogether in power supply services. |

COMPAQ: More like, we produce electricity and sell it at a loss plus some consumers don't pay for power at all. Meaning the sector operates at a loss.. Discos cannot charge cost reflective tarrifs which leads to stuff like them rejecting power from GENCOS |
