We Will Obey The Law: 17 Ebonyi Lawmakers Appeal Judgement Sacking Them by Kwanza: 7:01pm On Mar 10, 2022
The 17 members of Ebonyi State House of Assembly whose seats have been declared vacant by an Abuja Federal High Court for defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) Thursday said they have appealed the judgment of the high court.

The lawmakers at a press briefing in Abakaliki also said they have filed a stay of execution on the matter.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Chief Francis Nwifuru, in company of other affected colleagues, noted that they will obey the judgment as law-abiding citizens, but urged their supporters and constituents to remain calm.

“We are law-abiding citizens so we will obey the law. We are dissatisfied with the court ruling which is why we have appealed the judgment.

“It is about two days ago we started hearing the rumour that a Federal High Court in Abuja declared our seats vacant on the ground that we defected from PDP to APC.

“I know the position of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. But I am not in a position to know how the judiciary interprets the law. I am not against that.

“We have filed an appeal and a stay of execution. Since the matter is in the court of law there is no need to say anything about it. Our position is that the law will take its position. We are begging our constituents to remain law-abiding,” he said.

I wish these rubber stamp ducks in the name of assembly members, who follow governors that defect like flies escorting a poo stained ass, can be taught a bitter lesson by the court. The judgement of the higher court(s) can help sanitize our democratic process forthwith.

I think this is a better way to handle this kind of situation. But to be honest, I don't agree with the way and manner people defect from one party to another while in office. The law should protect political parties from such. Cross carpeting while in office should be discouraged.

Understand the reason behind this. Ideally, in a sane country, no individual moves from one party to another after being elected to a position on the platform of one party.

It is the useless and nonsense party system and so called democracy that we practice caused this rubbish.

We are waiting for INEC to do the needful. I wonder how long it will take INEC to study the court judgement before withdrawing the certificates of return of those greedy men.

“ I know the position of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria…”. He knows the law. He is a law matter. In this matter he cannot circumvent it.

Everyday for the thief, one day for the owner. The constitution is very clear on the issue of defection of members of the assembly. Politicians have taken it for a joke. These ones have been caught by the law. The lesson here is that politicians must choose their parties. If they intend to jump ship while holding their positions for flimsy reasons, then they know now that their acts of illegality will cost them their seats.

No matter how much time they waste, now everyone knows the price to pay for defection.
