The Academic Staff Union of Universities has again blamed the Federal Government for the ongoing strike in public universities.

The union’s National President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, stated in an interview with our correspondent that the government “went to sleep” for eight months after it completed negotiations with the union in May 2021.

According to him, ASUU waited for actions from the government to no avail.

Sunday PUNCH reports that ASUU had on Monday, March 14, 2022 announced an eight-week rollover of its four-week warning strike, which ended a day earlier.

Speaking with Sunday PUNCH, Osodeke explained that the union embarked on the eight-week rolling strike to give the Federal Government “more time.”

He said, “The initial idea was that the government would have met all the demands within the four weeks. But since the government said they could not meet up with our demands in four weeks, we said let us give them eight weeks. We just don’t want to declare an indefinite strike. Let us hope that in eight weeks, they meet up so that schools can return to normal and there will be an improvement in the system.

“All they have done is to make promises like they had done in the past. For our members, if you have made promises in the past that you did not fulfil, why should we believe you again? If the government was serious about these problems, within four weeks the problems would have been solved.

“We say release the white paper, release the revitalisation fund for universities and sign the agreement, these things should not have taken four weeks if they were serious.

“In 2021, ASUU did not go on strike and I’m sure you are aware of that. We completed negotiations in 2021, did we go on strike? Between May 2021 and February 2022, that is eight months, for them to go and look at what we discussed; did we go on strike during this period? No, but the government went to sleep.

“For eight months, the government went to sleep and when ASUU went on strike, they came up.”

When asked for his reaction to claims by the Federal Government that there were no funds to meet the demands of the union, Osodeke said, “The government said there is no money but they have money for elections. Between education and election, which one is much more important? They constructed a railway from Kaduna to Niger Republic, is that more important than education?

“They claim there is no money, but the President increased the duty tour allowance and you see them travelling from one country to another. Does that prove that there is no money? Who are the ones benefiting from the DTA? Aren’t they political office holders? But the one that concerns the ordinary Nigerians, they claim they don’t have money. It is not correct; it is just the issue of priority”.

The only way Nigerian educational system can improve is when we start having teachers who teach for the love of passing knowledge and this holds for all grades and level of educational institution, both from the primary to university level. These sets of lecturers we have now are so greedy that they can do anything to make money, even going as far as compromising their integrity and stooping so low as to collect bribes from student to pass them. I do not trust their motive as i have seen Prof Oorimogunje and Prof Ogunkoya of OAU Geography dept gone on to have very fulfilling careers and these two Profs you can tell are into it for the love of it. Since the advent of yahoo boys with cars on campus these lecturers have taken to persistent strike actions in a bid to force government to meet their demands and i can't help but wonder if they are trying to compete with these yahoo boys? If these lecturers think at all, they will know the country is in shambles right now economically and government meeting their demands at once will further plunge the country into untold hardship with the current increment in nearly all commodities by greedy Nigerians. ASUU should just call of it's strike action and dialogue with federal gov't as they can't bully Buhari into meeting their senseless demands. Before you criticize me go to any institution seek out 10 lecturers and ask them how they truly feel about the strike and you will find out at least 1 doesn't support the strike because they miss teaching. The students are the ones affected here not Federal Government.

I like Buhari's government because the hardship and suffering cut across everybody, I am very sure no APC member is buying diesel for #280 or #300 grin grin, even the rich are crying now.
Why would someone with complete brain and sense still open his or her mouth in support of this fail government and the failures warming up for 2023?

Your president is in UK hospital undergoing medical checkup, their party chairman is in UK hospital undergoing medical checkup as well, and his citizens are suffering, no good health care, no light, no fuel, no diesel, no good road, no running water, with wanton corruption here and there. Nothing is working, and you see nothing wrong with that? That's wow!!

I have come to realize that the problem of Nigeria is not majorly lack of education but mental illness and slavery. we have majority of supposed educated people still speaking big big English that cannot buy then fuel in filling station, opening their mouths and chanting sai Baba, vote Tinubu, vote Atiku.

Nigeria is afflicted with majority of foolish people unfortunately.

If you say you won't have sense, na suffering go kill you las las.

If you like, vote Tinubu and Atiku again, your suffering just started, they've all been in politics before majority of you were born, the problems they couldn't solved in over 20years, they're coming to tell you now that they will solve it and you start chanting like canary.

Suffering go reset your brain.

Interesting fact indeed! The fight and agitation for Better governance is collective one by all citizens who are not in government.

Imagine NANS, NLC, NBA, NMA, and other unions in total support with ASUU on this agitation? And vice versa when it affects others, then, only then will the brain of our so-called leaders be formatted

Nigerians probably deserve this man, because they voted him in even though they knew he was dull and wicked. Now a worst version of him is coming and they are stupidly supporting that one. Lol hand must reach everybody.

ASUU seems to be d only body dt fights &stands. Labour unions have failed; every other should just stay focused once&for all. If not, we'd only be pushing forward d evil days cos Nigeria will eventually shut down, even if it's for a while.

I don't know how we managed to mix up with these Niger/Chad people. Most of these people parading themselves as Northern Nigeria are immigrants from Niger/Chad(maybe Buhari included), thats why they don't and will never see southern Nigeria as one with them. Instead of Buhari to do something for South, he will prefer to do it for Niger/Chad. I have been to both Bornu and Yobe, our borders are too porous that little kids can just stroll in.. what a country!
