For someone at such meeting where the consensus was reached, that remark leaves much to be desired and the "but the President that he knows is a democrat and those who do not share the view may of course contest." just muddled it all.

He is talking tongue in cheek and if he was not physically present at that meeting, perhaps it could make sense.

Right now, the verdict of the media is right and this press release seems like an reluctant afterthought he needs to avoid a confrontation with the President.

You're the one reading and writing through pains.
The question asked him was about democracy and imposition of candidates in relation to their forthcoming convention. Do you expect him to say he supports "consensus" by the President of even confirm the president has a candidate he's willing to impose on the party?

He said the right thing and it's only pained people that are misrepresenting his thoughts. The President is within his democratic right to have a candidate and back him. If others do not agree, they have to right to run against the president's candidate. The president will abide by the result of such contest. That's simply what he said.
