Precisely! The problem is mostly that of laziness on the part of the poor.

From my experience of this particular sac farming, Nature does 80% of the real work, and anybody with youtube can set it up

Even when nature doesn't do à lot of it, there is no hard work in waking up to water or weed a small capacity farm or garden. The average Nigerian home ought to have a garden that continously and I mean year round supplies the kitchen with food essentials but that still isn't the case and the only reason is laziness. undecided

Nigerians, particularly the poor, need to change abeg. Go a poor home and you see big yard space but bare. Why? undecided

So I harvested today... Harvest wasn't so good and I think I know why.
1. The soil I planted with, didn't support Potato planted by someone else the previous season
2. My staking wasn't so good
3. fertilizer application wasn't good too
4. No seed treatment before planting
5. Negligence on my part during the course of the season
Fantastic

A plot takes over a thousand sacs

orogodoganyin:

if they do well, it means I don't have to worry about having acres of land to plant yam... A plot might take 500 or more seedlings, and in the comfort of my surroundings

That's even more economical than allotting a remote acre somewhere for the same job. undecided

Consider composting as way of improving soil quality since you are planting in bags. And maybe work on ensuring crops are well watered. That's my experience with bag planting. In case that regular watering is out of the question, then employ mulching which is a great way to reduce watering need.. undecided

The solution is apparently costly so I'm just leaving it be.

The fungi infection came from the yam setts I used. They were already infected so i guess it carried on to the plant eventually. They should've been treated before planting

How can the yam be treated before planting

How do you do that... I would be planting next year

The insecticide actually did a good job on the insects but it also affected the plants. Maybe the concentration was high...
But then new shoots and leaves came out and it's all good now.
I've applied a second doze of fertilizer and a third is due already.
Don't forget I've been applying in bits n not the usual amount.

At what stage (week) should this be done?

I tell you. Most are scared of hard work.
Great weather, land etc but hungrier!
No creativity or innovation. If there are large numbers of people like this OP in each state in Nigeria, things would be better.
They all want to go to university - yet parents can't afford to pay.
They can't feed yet have 4 children plus side children.

Well... At least, I know what to do against next season

Use cow manure instead of inorganic fertilizers .

You can bag the manures now and mulch it to prevent weed growth until when you are ready to start planting.

Your yield was poor for using the wrong fertilizer and also the bags might be too small for growing large tubers.

Consider larger backs and opt for cow dung instead. You can get the dung from your local cow market.
