There's nothing wrong with 5 -10 years taking on swimming lessons.

The problem here is the school were negligent.

It is ridiculous that someone that went for swimming training drowned. Were they been trained in Atlantic Ocean? It's gotta be in a swimming pool and why was there no adult and or lifeguard watching the kids at all times? This is the problem!

Am telling u.. kids where training and there was no ACTIVE lifeguard ...even adult that is learning swimming need lifeguard talk more or less a kid cool The school and even d lifeguard on duty must be punished seriously for such a negligence act .... Kai

Why do 5-10 years need swimming practice sessions for heaven's sakes?

It' high time school owners vet non-schooling engagements they expose their students to. See, now, such good will and years of efforts will flush through the drain over some non-sensical activity that would have been suggested by a fool

Most of these schools, private schools especially are trying to outdo each other on non essentials.

The useless teachers just want to use the opportunity to swim. Why take toddlers to adult section when you even adults easily get drowned if they are not good swimmers?
Such a painful but avoidable death. He should sue the school for their recklessness.

why expose to a 5yrs child to swimming is not the problem.
the problem here is the tutors or the teachers where busy gossiping not knowing what is happening behind them.

if a 5yrs can swim properly is a plus am over 30 and i cannot swim.

I’m deeply saddened and heartbroken. Don’t want to imagine the tortuous moments of both the late child and his broken parents. May the soul of Chidera Rest In Peace. Only the Lord can console his family

Such a terrible way to die. Trying to paint a picture of how the little boy was struggling down there, sends shiver down my spine.
They should sue the School authorities and Ivory Health Club.
Sadly, no amount of pecuniary compensation can ever bring the child back to life.

It is very very good exercise.

All the people I have known who were regular swimmers have well toned bodies.

Well toned body is good but there is the need to factor in the perculiarity of our environment.

Must our schools practice everything we see in schools in the western world, imagine taking pupils to adult swimming pool site to learn swimming, what a nonsense, what a carelessness from the school.
The school should be completely closed and somebody must be jailed for this.

I teach in a secondary school. But I was asked to escort the primary school section to the museum on one occasion. My brother, some children no easy to hold one place. As you are chasing after one to come back to the group, others will disappear. You need to constantly count them to make sure they are complete. It can be difficult especially if you don't know all the children in the class. Only one day with the nursery and primary section, I was mentally exhausted and drained. I understand with the caregivers, children can be very mischievous. But I still blame them for such risky extra curricular activity and lack of proper planning. I mean, why no floating jackets?? And from the story, you will notice that the school didn't get enough hands to watch over the students. This is bad. My condolences with the family.

Dear Parents , dont take your kids to any swimming lesson organized by school. Those people can be careless about safety especially Nigerian teachers.

Negligence by everyone concerned.

Negligence by the health club for not having a lifeguard on site.

Negligence by the school management for organising swimming lessons for kids at the adult section of the pool and without inflatable kits.

Negligence by the teachers for not keeping a constant eye on the little kids.

So many poor decisions led to the death of this boy.

Even a neglect by his peers who raised alarm about another kid but not about him.
Even a neglect by those who were supposed to be monitoring CCTV

It is high time the FG and the ministry of Education looked into the activities of all these so called private schools. The PTA should be involved in the school's activities and the strength of their personnel. This is highly unacceptable!! Parents should also not see these schools as a dumping ground for their children rather play their roles too because the school authorities have taken advantage of that and have resorted to employing unqualified academic and non-academic staff. RIP to the young boy!!!

This kid died owing to carelessness and lack of awareness by the teacher who took the children out for swimming. Her level of ineptness is second to none. How on earth did she fail to do regular checks on such a small number to discover the missing boy among his peer group. Would she have not noticed in case her son or daughter was among the kids but was not around for sometime? This is very sad. May God give the parents the fortitude to bear the loss.
