A Catholic sister woman, based in Enugu State, sent me an interesting message. Her message motivated me to come up with this great lesson. Her message reminded me of my youthful days’ stint with a Catholic parish, situated at Creek Road in Port Harcourt. Permit me to peruse her message.

Guru, the countenance of a friend of mine changed completely when she saw the statue of Holy Mary, Mother of God, in my home. She later confided to a friend of ours that she was most uncomfortable when she came to my home. She said that she thinks that Catholic members are idol worshippers because of the abundant presence of statues of Holy Mary, paintings of the Holy Spirit, saints, etc. in their worship centres and homes.

Guru, I was told that the images of ascended divine personalities displayed in the church are not worshipped. They are only used as visual aids to assist us in worshipping the living God.

Do you think that Catholic personalities are idol worshippers? What would you say about the rosary?

The statement is bold provides an apt definition of an idol.

No, Catholics DON'T worship idols. The images and statues are there for the same reason you have the photographs of your parents and other loved ones (dead or alive) in your home. They serve as remainders of the love you had/have for them. QED

The problem with that idea is that God specifically warned His followers never to put an image between His person and the individual.

You can take an image of your parents, self, etc. All that is absolutely fine, but when it comes to God, you are expected to directly address His person through His chosen mediator, Jesus Christ, whenever you reference Him, not pretend to speak to Him through am additional medium or image of some kind.

Well, I prefer the way Jesus Christ instead put it which is that all those who refuse to live in continuous submission to and obedience of His every teachings(and commandments) , God's Truth, are not of Him and so have no place in His Heaven - John 14 vs 15 - 25. So whether you are Catholic or not, so long as you live your life by doctrines and rules that are not of Him, you have no place with God - Matthew 15 vs 1 - 14 & Mark 7 vs 1 - 13
