I am a Software Engineer, and I have been one for more than 10 years. I studied Communications Engineering. I am giving these initial detail because I think you don't need to drop out of school if you are considering going into IT. Your mom is correct in some way, Electrical Engineering is broad and you can specialize in many similar fields later. You can get books and online resources to grow your IT skills. I learned how to code in school during my undergraduate degree, you can do that too. I don't think you should drop out. There are many courses in undergraduate Electrical engineering classes that you can apply in real-life. E.g Statistics, Linear Algebra, Calculus, Digital Electronics, Information theory, etc. I have applied the knowledge that I learned from these classes in my day job at some point. 3 Likes |

You are in your third year already. Don't drop out brother. While in school, I knew people that were studying other courses and learnt programming and other IT related courses. Finish Electrical but enrol for IT courses either online or offline. At the end, you'll have both your degree and a professional certification in IT. Also have in mind that dropping out and enrolling for computer science does not mean that you will be really good at any IT skill. Most of the syllabus in our schools are outdated. 1 Like |

Waooooo what an irony of life the same ELECT/ELECT which i love, studied and currently practicing with passion in the area of Building services with so many opportunities. My only candid advise for you is don't ever contemplate of dropping out because it is not an option at all it too late for that in my own opinion. Try and finish with your Elect/Elect even if you have to crawl try to. When you graduate you can switch to study IT or any other computer science or programming language of your choice as course of study in school is not a barrier to pursuing your dream and passion for the IT world. On the hand of switching to another course you Love, well it a good idea but will you will have to double up to catch up although I don't really have much to say on this |

Bros please finish the Elect-Elect course. Organizations are available to train you on ICT courses for free (intern) with an Elect-Elect degree. The degree could open doors for you in other fields. Please be open minded and grab opportunities as they come. 1 Like 1 Share |

Village people on the beat! U wan change course for Naija university with all these ASUU wahala? Just graduate from this course, a good industrial training (IT) placement alone can make you fall in love with this course that you despise. I don't want to believe that you hate all the courses offered within the programme. Those ones you like should at least be your motivation to finish it. After graduating, you can become a politician, open a fish farm, learn coding or press lappy as a "graduate" 2 Likes |

Kibbs: This is quite sad to read. I don't think it's too late to do what you want to do. Even if you graduate and get a job that has to do with Elect Eng, you will hate the job as well. What is the essence of life if you aren't happy in it. Do what makes you happy. Go for the IT you love, now that you still have the time. I have an aunt who changed career at age 45. You still have time on your hands, trust me. 1 Like |

EE is one of the best courses you can do. Complete it and do IT masters or MBA. If you still want to be a writer or do a humanities course, you can. Finish what you started first. Thank your mum and principal later. |

I will be turning 50 in a few months time, I worked in Financial Services for almost 2 decades, rising to Regional Management Position, I studied Engineering and had an Msc and MBA!! None of these were my true callings nor aligned to the talents God imbued me with. I was in your circumstances in Secondary School; English and History were my standout subjects and I excelled in them, making an A2 and A1 respectively. But as a very 'intelligent' student I was encouraged or rather compelled to do sciences. I can't say I have regrets about the path I took in life because I have made a huge success out of it, but I always knew I could have done better in a vocation that was my true calling and could harness the talents God imbued in me, and I am today moving in that direction in seeking for self actualization. So, you are still young!! You can move in the direction your heart and head directs you, but be sure you are not running away from challenges!! 7 Likes |

Try find intersections between Elect and IT that you are interested in the do a deeper reflection to see what piques your interest among the various intersections and focus on it. If none, then change your course of study into that which you love. 2 Likes |

Kibbs: DON'T DROP OUT NOR CHANGE YOUR COURSE! It doesn't really matter whether you have passion for it or not, you can focus on being a graduate while at the same time learn what you have passion for by the side. Nigerian certificate is just a box you need to check, that's all. |
Re: Should I Drop Out Or Not? by Nobody: 5:02pm On Jun 01, 2022 |
Kibbs: Stay in school for the degree. Computer science is no better than the engineering you're being taught. You'll feel the same way you feel now and will be totally disappointed, and that's if you get admission easily. Instead, go online to learn the IT skills you like. That's how most programmers and IT guys in Nigeria got to where they are today. Many didn't even go to uni and only a small fraction of those that did, learned computer science. 2 Likes |

Whatever it is. Please don't drop out! What exactly is your passion? Answer this and you hVe solved half of the problem. Then, does your passion needs you to be in UNIVERSITY? If yes, you could consider a change of course If NO, finish your current course . Just 2 years remaining. While you follow the route of your passion. One thing I can never take away from school is the socials, the connections, the people you meet, The like minds and the inspirations you get from them. You hVe friends ? Yeah? Make una move together to enlighten , help , educate each other. You will kneed these knowledge later on. Please whatever it is. Don't drop out. 1 Like |

Start your computer science journey here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5nskjZ_GoI&list=PL8dPuuaLjXtNlUrzyH5r6jN9ulIgZBpdo&index=1 You can drop out of school if you don't like, plus school stuff is a giant waste of time these days. Waste of money, time, energy plus useless certs. You're better off learning on your own. Join like minded groups on Telegram and be happy. While your mate are still waiting for the government till 2023, you already learn the basics. By the time they're in NYSC, you're steadily making money. Thank me 200 years later. |

Kibbs:Don't drop my course, well apart from it being an interesting branch of engineering, it gives you a wide range of opportunities in the labour market. You are almost through, why don't you complete it and go for your second degree |
Re: Should I Drop Out Or Not? by Ogungbl: 5:12pm On Jun 01, 2022 |
Just do it any how and get that certificate. Nigeria is a country where the only thing that is certain is what has happened. You see that, yet to happen is still a mirage. Do everything within your capacity to ensure you finish the course even if you you are going to keep the certificate. You can cross to wherever you want after first degree. You never can tell. |

My advice: Do not drop out. You are halfway done. In Nigeria, or even to get out of Nigeria, your degree is extremely important. Take Google Certification courses if you can. UX research & design, project management, web design, etc. See if you can get into the pipelines for work from home jobs from the US in Nigeria. Try to finish your degree with a 2,2 at worst. Good luck. |
