Correction: not a cursor scale, they are elevations above the relative sea level

yes you are correct. it is height of the location above sea level. but is has nothing to do with scale. the picture is still the same scale. the calculation of the area is got from the scale. even if the height are the same. the picture would not change. the scale is use to measure the distant.
