The Benin kingdom killed some white men and the kingdom was punished. This does not prove that the Benin kingdom was the most civilised in Nigeria, though it was civilised and organised.

They prolly wishing cheesy

Do you know why the Benin did what they did then....this is Fienberg review of Ryders work Benin and the Europeans 1485-1897 grin

You don't have to dethrone to water down, all you need to elevate others and govt give them relevance

In Yorubaland there were very few Obas before. I think it was 60s or 70s that even Ibadan throne and others were elevated to full Obas. To reduce the influence of Alaafin who was supposed to be the biggest king

Traditionally Ooni was not a king, he was like a priest until someone decided to cut the influence of Alaafin because of the then Alaafin issue with Bode Thomas an Action Group member they elevated the Ooni throne under Adesoji Aderemi who was Governor General of the western region

That’s why I said it is disengagious to compare the Benin situation with what obtains in other parts of the country . Most communities in Nigeria have more than one ruling house .

The Binis have just one ruling house . How will a governor create multiple ruling houses ?

He doesn't need to create others, he will simply elevate existing chiefs and give them more power, reduce funding to Oba and share with others too

I told you i was living Benin City when it happened, i witness the drama live. That screenshot was just to buttress my initial point that the Military Governor apologised to the Oba after body don tell am ofcourse, if others are struggling to deduce the message you shouldn't be.

How does that now make the Oba not remaining as the Oba ? How does that make the next Oba come from another family and not the family of the Oba he just dethroned ?

Post the letter again for BlueRayDick to see

This was the same Ajimobi template in Ibadan. Elevate other chiefs

It's like instead of Arsenal have Odegaard as sole captain , now say Harvetz is captain of attack, Gabriel is captain of defence, Declan is captain of DM, Raya captain of goalkeeping

You have ended watering down Odegaard influence and power

grin

......to whom and whoever it may concern. LOL!

Here is a journal published in 1908 long before Awo...and it's disagree with you claim that Oni was a mere priest.

Oba will still be Oba but with less power and influence and what's an Oba without the power?

There will be Oba of Bini, Theflint1 of Ikpoba(a part under the Oba rule but taken away from him), Segedinho of GRA etc until the power of Oba is greatly reduced

Why do you think BTC wrote against it? That's because they know that na from clap dance dey start

The Old Oyo Empire was the most powerful and organised, with a system of government close to the modern system of government.

"The Oyo Empire’s government comprised a supreme king (Alaafin) and a council of seven elders (Oyo Mesi) which was led by the Bashorun. Thus, the Alaafin’s ruling powers were not absolute as he still had to answer to the Oyo Mesi—even the Oyo Mesi were subject to checks and balances by a judicial and religious cult called the Ogboni.

The Oyo Mesi essentially acted as a parliament, representing the voice of the people and protecting their interests. The Bashorun served as the commander in chief of Oyo’s army and organized several religious festivals, giving him some military and religious sway over the Alaafin. For instance, the Bashorun was in charge of managing the important Orun festival, during which the Alaafin was unable to leave the palace due to ritual restrictions."

This has always been my position in this matter .

Every other thing is a matter of subjectivity and perception . It is subject to how individuals perceive it.

The people of the town/kingdom know whom their loyalty lies with. Politicians will always be politicians

This is not true.

The Oba would still be the main Oba, but his influence and power would be watered down.

We could even argue that the Oba would no longer be Oba because the Oba with that level of power would not exist again.

You should think about why the Oba of Benin is trying his best to resist the creation of more traditional councils.

Then you'll now ask what is Oba without power, when his influence is restricted

When Oba can say this and the other elevated chief can say another with govt backing them

Soon they'll have their own palace, escort, Prado jeeps

Let’s wait tilll that happens . Let’s wait till till the elevated chiefs start usurping the traditional jurisdiction of the Oba .

Till that happens , every other thing is wishful thinking .

Did any of the chiefs elevated by Ajimobi usurp the jurisdiction of the late Olubadan ?

Politicians can choose to give money prado and what have you to anybody they so desire due to the executive powers they have at their disposal . But when it comes to traditional rulers , it is the people that decide who they actually owe their loyalty .

Straight on...👍

Which invasion pass this one undecided

When they arrived, the British didn't just annex.

They pillaged.

They destroyed.

One historian wrote that the British "scorched the earth with rockets, fire and mines."

They killed civilian men, women, and children.

With so much death, Benin City "reeked of human blood."

British forces & the maxim gun in action illustrated London News March 1897.

The Maxim gun was invented in 1884. It was not only the first fully automatic machine gun in the world but was an ultra modern weapon at the time....it was unleashed on Africans & Asians. It was used on Africans/Asians even before many Europeans knew of such a weapon.

Stop running around man, you claimed Europeans were in Benin in the 14 century which is false...now you are giving me an article from the Guardian that references claims from multiple sources with no concrete evidence only hearsay, hearsay cheesy I can also give you articles that say Eredo Sungbo is the world's largest man-made structure which is even more verified than the so-called 16 thousand km wall with no traces grin

And know that the Great Wall of China is 21 thousand km plus so your article is the total combination of falsehood. grin
