Infertility can have several causes, including those related to genetics, anatomy, illness, and other factors. However, one's way of life may also play a role in causing infertility. Making wise, healthy lifestyle choices is essential while seeking to increase fertility for the purpose of becoming pregnant. These are typically things that people can accomplish on their own, without the need for medical assistance or reproductive treatments.

Infertility is not always treatable or preventable by changing one's lifestyle. However, for some men and women, better health and more mindful decisions about their bodies might boost fertility.

Some people or couples may discover that even after implementing the subsequent lifestyle modifications, they still struggle with infertility. Going to a fertility doctor now could help rule out any underlying health problems that could be preventing conception.

Lifestyle causes of infertility in women

Healthy weight and diet

Women who eat well and exercise tend to have a higher birthrate. Ovulation can be negatively impacted by both being overweight and underweight. Ovarian dysfunction is more common in women whose body mass index (BMI) is significantly above or below the average. This is because these issues can disrupt the body's production of essential hormones, which can lead to sterility.

The development of polycystic ovarian syndrome may also be influenced by one's diet and body mass index (PCOS). Obese women with PCOS who lose just 5 percent of their body weight have a much better chance of ovulating and becoming pregnant, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Some women will also benefit from low-carbohydrate diets.

Stop smoking

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) reports that smoking has a significant negative impact on a woman's fertility in addition to other health risks. A woman's egg supply declines and her ovaries age faster when she smokes. Smoking is associated with a higher risk of ectopic pregnancy because it damages the cervix and fallopian tubes.

Also, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) reports that pregnancy rates are lower among women who smoke or who are in relationships with smokers.

Finally, a pregnant woman who smokes increases her risk for pregnancy issues such as intrauterine growth restriction and placental infarction (loss of blood supply to the placenta).

Limit alcohol consumption

While it's generally accepted that pregnant women shouldn't drink, the effects of alcohol on fertility are less well understood. Infertility and ovulation difficulties have both been linked to heavy alcohol usage.
