Childhood dream career: Electrical Engineer

Presently: CEO of an electrical company.

I build and install inverters and solar panels.
I also build electrical panels that can do the following;

1. Auto change over that can turn off your generator when power is restored
2. Automatic phase selector that allows you to change phase automatically as long as power is in any of the three phases
3. Automatic three phase change over that scrutinizes voltage levels before been triggered in order to protect your house from high voltages and low voltages
4. Panels that allows you control your home appliances over your mobile phone via WiFi.

I also conduct trainings for all of the above for nysc members.
I do bonus tutorials on building microcontroller based battery chargers and inverters.

I love electrical engineering.

What childhood dream did you have but unfortunately Nigeria happened to you?

I wanted to be a doctor but ended up a teacher, what about you?

My dream career before JS 3 was to go to space, so I guess astronaut. But once the educational system decided I was an arts student, that dream began to die.

Before SS 1,If was talking with a friend I’d say advertising (I used to wonder how those ads were made, then I went to secondary school with a course mate, whose grand dad was The first indigenous managing director and chairman of Nigeria’s pioneer advertising agency, Lowe Lintas Limited and He used to tell us advertising stories) so maybe that influenced me

But if you were an authority figure - like teacher or uncle- and you asked me, I would say “Lawyer”. I can’t say it’s because my Dad, who was already an accountant , also read Law and was called to Bar in my JS1. Otherwise, why didn’t I say accountant? Maybe cos I was not the most comfortable with Maths??

Anyway, by the time I was about to enter Uni, I wasn’t sure what I wanted. At some point if you asked me, I’d say sociology, I guess I made sense of it cos that’s what Unilag offered me. I ended up not going there.

I even ended up reading English in LASU cos the school I applied to had been closed for over a year due to student activism and I was tired of waiting.

But guess what? right in the middle of my second semester in LASU, on a day that I had been chosen to lead a class group assignment, I learnt I had to depart almost a thousand kilometers northward to zaria.

I ended up getting an LL.B from ABU Zaria, and a BL from the Nigerian Law School.

And many years after, Yes, I am a Lawyer, but it’s only about 10% of what I do, and what brings in the dough. At some point in my career , I even worked in a top advertising firm too smiley Law was a very good foundation though.

P.S.

Nigeria did not happen to you. All over the world there are people not doing what they dreamt to do. It is not only a Nigerian reality, it is wholly a Human reality.

Life never truly follows a straight line. As a wiseman once said; “Life is lived forward but understood backwards” . You are right where you need to be, you just need clarity, to truly see.

Where you are coming from, will always be a foundation. Where you are going to is more about the journey than the destination. Your life is still going on; there’s still room for growth and innovation. Selah.

Smiling while writing this, First, in my primary school days, I wanted to be a truck driver, I mean articulated trucks with a minimum of 22 tires

Fast forward to secondary school days, junior secondary school days, it was soldier, I really wanted to be a soldier.

Discovered Physics in my Senior class and my dream changed to be a great and renowned Physics like Albert Einstein, after writing my

SSCE, I went back to being a soldier again, after countless applications to NDA and I could not make the cut, then I was way above the

entry age, I dejectedly try the university, entered Physics as my course of study, and made it on 2nd attempt. Then FUTO now came with no

combining of results, and I had to go for another course (This was a blessing in disguise).

Today, as they say, the rest is history, currently practising what I read in Uni and really enjoying it.

Normally it also skyrocketed just like the price of other commodities na. Around 2013 it was bn sold for around #300,#320 per kilo, wen i started learning the trade in 2019, a kilo of cocoa was sold for #580, #600 per kilo, by 2020 main crop, it was selling for
1040 per kilo before it dropped to 850 per kilo by the turn of 2021, main crop for 2021 was selling for 1200 per kilo till around February this year before it dropped down to #950, #1000 this present moment.

Cocoa harvest season is really from around October, peaking in November/December.
harvest season for cocoa is two tyms in a year, the main crop (September to December) and the light crop (April to july)

Oh great. Thanks. Are there now good modern cocoa breeds that start fruiting earlier than in the past?

Does the govt or co-operatives still provide fungicides and other chemicals to prevent cocoa diseases? We need to be producing more cocoa like in the 1950 to the 1980s. It's like oil palm and plantain plantations overtook cocoa production in recent years.
