Dr Tobore Gbemre
Treat Applicants, New Joiners, Interns or NYSC Personnel with kindness...

Let me tell a short story that happened some years ago and is still playing out..

A new engineer was employed into an organization in the early 2000s. On joining, he had a manager who didn't like him. The manager frustrated him, criticized his work and bypassed him for training and growth opportunities. This young engineer kept being professional and delivered on his task. His quality job spoke for him and he got transferred to work directly with the MD as his Technical Assistant (TA).

That signalled his exponential growth in the organization. He was sent for training and courses, both local and overseas, sent for conferences and seminars and he enjoyed regular promotion, which made up and surpassed all what he lost.

Fast forward to year 2018, the young engineer had risen to become the Deputy MD of the organization while his former boss was now retired. During the processing of the former boss' retirement benefits, the DMD needed to sign and he saw his former boss' name. He remembered all what the former boss subjected him through. Being human, he got emotional and delayed signing..

The former boss had fallen on hard times due to the recession and the ongoing devaluation of the Naira which eroded his savings over the years, and needed his benefits for survival..

To cut the story short, it took a lot of people to pacify the DMD before he signed and released his benefits to him. When they eventually met, the old boss could not look at him in the eyes and he felt ashamed. The DMD forgave him and they made up.

Whether you're currently a Manager, General Manager or Executive, remember a day will come when you'll retire. You won't work forever!

Be kind to applicants, new joiners, Interns, NYSCs and fresh hires. In 15-20 years from today, you would have probably retired and these Interns, NYSCs and fresh hires will be the ones at the helm of affairs then. They'll be the ones to pay your pension, medical and retirement benefits. Do you get?

I'm talking to you, yes, YOU!!!

Titles and Positions are transient and ephemeral. Do not get conceited, proud or get carried away. Please, remain humble and be fair in your dealings...!

That young boy, girl, Applicant, Intern, NYSC or new joiner of today will grow and become an Industry Leader in years to come when you'll be retired, and they may be in charge of decisions that may affect you..

This is just a gentle reminder for us to treat people kindly and be transparent in our dealings.

Have you ever been picked on unfairly by a senior colleague? How did you handle it?

Also, if you were the DMD in this story, would you have forgiven your former boss?

I share real-life stories to motivate, inspire and encourage you. Share my posts and follow me for more relatable content.

SHARE YOUR STORIES OF FAILURE AND SUCCESS

In the world we live in right now, motive is everything. Two friends can engage in the same situation with different motives. Colleagues can share their promotion news with others to either be boastful about it or to motivate someone in the company.

There is a lot of story telling these days to make others feel they are not doing enough and there are stories shared to encourage other to push through. This isn't the main part of the write-up.

The main part of the write-up is to share your story of success and failure. The process and how you were able to pull through great and difficult situations. The story sharing doesn't necessarily have to be online but share to motivate someone, share for someone to avoid same error, share for someone to derive strength to pull through.

I have shared posts in the past from time to time and some months back (maybe 4months), a senior colleague I respect so much sent me a long write-up (image is a fragment) and I was excited to read those beautiful feedback. At the time I was going through the situation she wrote about, it doesn't look good and rosy for me but I picked the lessons from it.

I share with one motive in mind, I share that it would lift others. I share that folks can know if they find themselves in such situation, they can come out successfully on the other side.

P.S: This friend of mine now works as Data Analyst at Deloitte

Come on down off that high horse, honey. The stink is attracting flies.

Professional people are entire human beings with stories and pasts.

They have/had addictions.
They’ve done sex work.
They have disabilities.
They have mental health.
They have employment gaps.
They have abortions.
They have tattoos and piercings.
They aren’t all straight or cisgender.
They have different hair and hairstyles.
They aren’t all white.
They didn’t all have what others have.
They don’t all want the same things.

The game needed changing and they change it.

And they work and pay taxes and engage in trade and vote and do the same sh!t that any other stuffed shirt does.

Abandon your ego.

Threesha:

Here's the difference between a CV, Cover Letter and Resume:

Please don't confuse all these terms for the same thing

I see a lot of people confusing CV for Resume. While both serve the same purpose, they are used base on what's requested in the job application

A CV means Curriculum Vitae, which can also be referred to as an Expanded Resume.

Curriculum Vitae is a Latin word meaning "Course of Life". It is more detailed than a resume, generally ranges from 2 to 3 pages, or even longer depending on the requirements or achievements of the person.

A CV highlights every skill, degrees, professional affiliations, work experience and relevant participation the applicant has acquired, and these are arranged in chronological order.

A CV highlights the general talent of the candidate rather than specific skills for a specific position.

Now what's a Resume?

A Resume is a French word meaning "Summary". A resume includes the summary of one's education, skills and experiences. A resume doesn't list out the full details like the CV, it is only some specific skills customised to the targeted job that is highlighted. It is usually a page or maximum, two pages long, and it usually written in the third person to give it an objective and formal tone (though this is not compulsory)

And Finally,

What's a Cover Letter?

A cover letter is a brief overview of your background and the reason why you should be considered for a particular job or gig. This is where you convince your employer or Recruiter that you have what it takes to deliver this job stating your experience in it, just like a background to convince them to look at your resume and consider you for the job.

For example, if you are to mention in your cover letter that you've been working as a Content Marketer for the past 3 years and have a professional qualification in digital marketing, your CV and Resume which is attached to the mail is where the full details is being highlighted

So sometimes, backing up your job application with a Cover letter helps or propels the recruiter or employer to go through your CV or Resume because it's not every CV or Resume that's being checked these days.

I hope this content explains better the difference between CV, Resume and Cover Letter

Kindly share to reach more people out there

You should also follow threesha ✍ for more valuable contents

Enjoy the rest of your day

Thanks for the knowledge.

It's value point 6 today on "Before You Prepare Your CV."

Yesterday, I wrote on the four ways employers perceive your CV: precise, standard, allowable, and unacceptable. A precise CV is the CV with the highest chance of getting a yes-response.

The pointer today is on when (or when not) to put your job title under your name in your CV.

If you are still trying to figure out your work path, there's no need using titles under your name. I read the CV of a man, working for one of the top oil firms, who wanted to help me get a job after my master's degree. He used a particular title on his CV because he is established in that role and he is known in the industry. He chose that path and grew in it. He is a "project controls manager." He is established in project controls, and emphasized the "control" to show that he is a project manager with experience in the "monitoring and control" process group in project management. That emphasis also distinguishes him from others who would generally use "project managers" as their titles for a project control role. Going through his CV, I discovered he prepared for over 10 years before he got established in that role. He had the confidence to use that title.

Specialists can use title under their names as emphasis for quick reference.
If a hospital calls for consultants in different areas of medicine, a medical doctor who is a "consultant paediatrician" can use this title. The title here makes it easier for recruiters to sort CVs and put them in respective categories.

You can also use titles under your name if you have chosen a career path you know you will do the next 10 to 20 years or even more. Like if you have chosen to be a food analyst in agro-food industry, you are most likely going to be applying for jobs strictly related to this role.

If you are an accountant, and you are submitting your CV to an accounting firm, you don't need to use a title under your name but if it's a competitive role, you can use "Chartered Accountant." The "Chartered" could make the difference between you and others. However, if the employer stated in the eligibility requirement that they want only chartered accountants to apply, it's not necessary to put this as a title under your name since it's also going to be in the section for qualifications.

So there are questions to answer before you use a title under your name in your CV:

1. Are you established in your role?
2. Are you a specialist?
3. Are you on a definite career path?
4. Does your title communicate a valued difference?

A title under your name in your CV is easy to notice, that's why people put it there but ensure it communicates something meaningful.

Some bosses get it wrong, being a boss does not guarantee that you are the wisest person in the room, You don’t need to be right all the time, those people’s ideas you despise might be the key to prosperity in your organization.
A good leader is the one who;

Creates an inspiring vision of the future.
Motivates and inspires people to engage with that vision.
Manages delivery of the vision.
Coaches and builds a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision.

Someone did us dirty some years ago..

I've had some funny experiences with recruiters in the past. Let me share one now and I'll share the other some other time..

Immediately after MBA, we were job searching. There was one guy who was working in one reputable organization and needed to revamp his CV for an international application for himself. He hadn't applied for a job in a long time and wasn't sure of the latest way of writing his CV.

Do you know what he did?

He advertised that he was recruiting for a position and that people should apply. A lot of people applied including yours truly (me), he got a lot of CVs, went through and revamped his CV with the ones he liked and did his application..

We didn't hear from him. We sent reminder emails, no response and we moved on. It was later one of his colleagues we were friendly with blew the lid and told us there was no opening, that he was just looking for the latest CV to rejig his own with.

Dishonest, isn't it?

People can exploit the vulnerability of other people's situations for their selfish benefit.

After that experience, I stuck to 3 rules:

1. If the recruiter's email address is not linked to an organization and is a free one (eg. @yahoo, gmail, etc.), I do not bother.

2. Request for the Job Description (JD). Such hurriedly made-up jobs may not have any JD.

3. Do not include personal identifying information in your CV. You can just include your name, mobile number and email address. Take out age, home address, etc. Be security conscious.

Your CV might end up anywhere ~ in a dustbin, with a Suya or Akara seller. Protect yourself by limiting the personal identifying information you put in there!

Be discerning as you go about your job search so you're not exploited or you don't give away your personal information to dubious individuals. Desperation will kick in at some point, try to keep your emotions under check.

I share real-life stories to motivate, inspire and encourage you. Share my posts and follow me for more relatable content.

Let people earn their way into your inner court.

Don't meet someone today and the next minute, you are pulling them into the inner chambers of your life

Let people pass your test before you grant them access; because access equals vulnerability.

And vulnerability is risky.

Vulnerability can be deadly.

The one you bring closer is the one whose stab would hurt you the most. Read that sentence again.

Don't give people access to your sanctuary by the mere fact that you know them or that they are nice.

Let them know that access is a highly priced asset that must be "paid for" before it is given to them.

Listen, not many people have the maturity to handle the sensitivity of certain proximity and disclosures.

Not many people have the composure to see you in your unclothedness and still hold you in high respect.

Let people earn the right to hear your secret.

I am not saying you shouldn't trust people. But learn to verify everyone you let into your Holy of Holies.

If they want access, then they must be tested
