Nigerian customers of SpaceX’s Starlink service will pay only US$99 for their starter kit, only a sixth of the $599 that US customers have to pay.

The Ecofin news agency in Africa says that Starlink will start services to Nigeria in August, but does not yet give a monthly subscription rate. Americans pay $110 a month for Starlink, which is delivered by the company’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites.

Starlink’s service map quotes Q3 of 2022 for start of service in Nigeria, well ahead of other countries in Africa, including neighbouring Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Ghana, Mali and Niger, all of which indicate 2023 – without identifying a quarter – as the start date.

The early start in Nigeria follows an agreement with the regulator revealed in late May.

According to the news agency, Starlink started prospecting the Nigerian telecoms market in May 2021, in the framework of its African expansion plan, amid growing demand for high-speed connectivity. It also targeted South Africa and Zimbabwe, both also labelled as 2023 for start of service, among other markets.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has awarded licences to Starlink, including a 10-year international gateway licence and a five-year internet service provider (ISP).

Starlink’s satellite fleet passed 2,500 in May this year. The company aims to launch 4,400 in its current generation, orbiting at heights from 335km to 550km, but eventually plans as many as 42,000.

The government of Nigeria hopes that Starlink will contribute to its goal of covering 90% of the country with broadband by 2025 as part of its digital transformation plan.

A report from Ookla last year said US customers were getting a median download speed of 97.23Mbps and a median upload speed of 13.89Mbps.

Including MTN and Airtel.

The 3 major service providers go surely lose some or majority of their heavy subscribers before December 2022.

Data price is so expensive in Nigeria with there terrible network.

Airtel, Mtn, Glo, it's time to buga you all.
For those who can afford the starlink network though.

Wanted to mention 9 mobile but I'm not seeing them as competitor.

not every Nigerian can pay $99 (btw the range of NGN64,000 - NGN64,400) for internet in a month, hope u knw?

most Nigerians will still choose to pay Airtel and co less than NGN5K (btw the range of $11 - $12) for a month for internet connection...

Starlink will be useful to few who can afford it. Airtel and co might be cheating us with expensive data but they are kind off offering to us what we can afford. While on the other hand, Starlink is providing to us what we deserve but not all of us will be able to afford it...

Hope u get my point

Dem never ready. undecided

With the high cost of living in naija now then imagine paying almost an $100 for just internet service...
I would rather stick to my local network provider pls.
This comment is not for those few ones whom don't have problem affording their service.

Bro, StarLink offers unlike others, average of 100Mbps.
With this you need not dstv subscription etc.

The only better Internet service you get is Fibre Optic service but most of them in Nigeria are not reliable.

Granted, the price is not cheap but trust me I spend more monthly with MTN hynetflex still no unlimited Internet.

You guys are very funny in Nigeria and thats why oyibo dey use una mop ground.

Swift offers super unlimited internet at 25k a month. Same with Smile and Spectranet. But una penchant for anything oyibo dey kill una.

Pray tell me, what do you intend to do with a speed of 100MBPs? Are you streaming data from heaven?

I do hope you know that at 99$ a month and you have like only 1000,000 subcribers... Thats 99 million dollars leaving that country monthly? Una wan die?

$99 sounds like the setup equipment not the monthly sub. In developed countries it cost $599 to get same setup equipment while their monthly cost is $110. Our monthly subscription fee may be $50 or thereabouts.

Swift doesn't offer unlimited Internet service.
The unlimited service is only available at night time and weekends and I have read very horrible reviews about their services. Besides, Swift is not available to my location.

Smile is a huge pile of trash. Hardly get 3mpbs in my location, let's not even talk about the 'unlimited' stuff with them. I purchased their router and Internet plans and can authoritatively tell you they are a huge pile of shit. Maybe my location.

I also use vsat Internet, Konnect Africa. They offer Internet services similar to Swift and can be good at times but I currently cannot understand their free night unlimited in their plans.

Mtn hynetflex is by far the fastest but they are not unlimited.
I have over 5 different routers and can tell you Internet services are piece of trash in Nigeria.

What I do with 100Mbps?
I currently get an average of 90mbps with mtn in my location and I do stream a lot in 4k resolution on Netflix and other services and sometimes 8k on YouTube.

I've use swift, smile and Spectranet before, I had to abandon them for MTN Hynetflex.

In terms of speed and reliability, MTN is still the best for now, base on my experience.

The problem with Swift, Smile and Spectranet is coverage. They are only in the major cities.

I think the $99 price is just for starter kits like receivers, antennas etc. Even in the US, according to the news, their monthly subscription fees is around $110...

They too need competitors to compete this market with them or they will end up like Almighty MTN in 2003/2004 selling their sim card for N35,000 back then.

MTN, ya fada!, Baba buroobanka!

The best option is for them to sell it off to competent people/company

They can sell it to Orange.
