Sh. Muhammad Bazmool حفظه الله explained (during the explanation of Sunan Ibn Majah book) the description of the prayer. When he reached the rulings related to Sajdah, he mentioned the verse:

سِيمَاهُمْ فِي وُجُوهِهِم مِّنْ أَثَرِ السُّجُودِ ۚ
"The mark of them (i.e. of their Faith) is in their faces (foreheads) from the traces of prostration (during prayers." (48/29)

He clarified that the intended meaning of the "Sajdah Mark" is not an actual physical marking that you see on some people's forehead. Instead, it is a light, brightness, calmness, and peace in their faces. This is corroborated by the Tafsir of the Salaf.

If the intent was an actual marking, then it would have said in Arabic على وجوههم meaning "on their faces", but Allah said "in their faces

في وجوههم".

Additionally, we know that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was described in detail, yet, we have no narration that describes him with this mark on his forehead.

"This is not a sign of pious people, but the sign of the pious people is the light that one has on the face, contentment in the heart, good moral conduct and so forth. As regards the mark on the face that is caused by prostrating, then this mark may appear on someone who does not pray except the obligatory prayer because of him having soft or sensitive skin, and it may not appear in the face of someone who prays so many (supererogatory) prayers and prostrates for a long time.” - Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen

That mark doesn’t really mean that one prays frequently. In fact some people even put it there artificially. If it’s by praying frequently how come people like bola tinubu, buhari, fashola and Saraki don’t have it on their foreheads?

Some people still have the marks and they are neck deep into crime. An example is the famous Yoruba actress taiwo akinwande popularly known as yetunde wumi. Despite her dark forehead she still ended up smuggling cocaine abroad.
