PDP Chairman & Presidential Candidate Can't Come From Same Zone-ayu Must Resign by Creatorchris(m): 8:27am On Sep 16, 2022 |
Olabode George, a former deputy national chairperson of the Peoples Democratic Party, has stated that the party's Presidential Candidate and National Chairman cannot be from the same zone, and hence Iyorchia Ayu must quit as National Chairman. George announced this during a news conference in Lagos on Thursday. He demanded Ayu's resignation, saying that the current structure of the north occupying the presidency and national chairman seats could not last. "In May of this year, we elected our presidential candidate in the form of Atiku Abubakar, leaving aside the concept of rotation as entrenched in our party's constitution in the cause of peace and unity," George remarked. Today, our National Chairman hails from the same geographical region as our presidential candidate. "Some argue that there is nothing wrong with the current setup. Some claim that this occurred under Chief Olusegun Obasanjo's presidency, when the candidate and national chairman were both from the same zone. "To be honest, there are significant contrasts between the circumstances then and now." Then there was the party's leader, who was a sitting president from the South at the time, and the candidate from the North. "In addition, the National Chairman, Dr Ahmadu Ali, was on his way out at the time." We no longer have a sitting President from our party at Aso Villa, therefore that argument no longer holds water. We must quit playing games and becoming zombies. "Permit me to summarize the origins of the current situation. "Our country has six top roles, as envisioned by our party's founding fathers: President, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and National Chairman of the party." "Because we are not now in government, we only control three of these six positions: Presidential, Vice Presidential Candidates, and National Chairman." "I recall Dr. Iyorchia Ayu stating emphatically that if the Presidential Candidate arises from the North, he will quit in order for a new National Chairman to emerge from another zone before the presidential campaign begins." "The other three slots are in the future." We will fill these posts, namely Senate President, Speaker, and Secretary of the Federal Government, only if we win the elections. "Because of the desire for inclusivity, oneness, and unity, having the Presidential Candidate and the National Chairman from the same zone makes no political sense." We now have a scenario in which some seniors say, "It doesn't matter." Can we go into the election with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Dr. Iyorchia Ayu leading our National Campaign from the same zone? "This will be an outrage, an impunity, and an insult to the electorate and Southern party members." "Dr. Ayu publicly pledged to quit before the presidential primary in May if the Presidential Candidate emerged from the North." So, why is he refusing to keep his word? Why is he breaking his promise? What is the source of his unwillingness to resign? "We are promising Nigerians that when we get to power, every tribe would have a say in government, but how can we expect Nigerians to believe us when we can't keep a basic promise?" Our National Chairman made a promise, which he has breached in such a short period of time. "Our southern party members are now openly asking the following questions: "Have we abandoned our moral compass? "How would Southern PDP leaders persuade their electorates to vote for our candidate while the Southwest lacks a significant National position?" "How can we go into the election season with this much discord and hope to win the presidential election on February 25?" "Until we come together unless we have fairness, equity, and justice in our system, the party and the country will fail." "I am not a fortune teller, but I have traveled the length and width of our country and learned so much about politics." What I have foretold above will occur unless reason triumphs and we quickly press the brake. "The same narrow-minded and disloyal logic that led to the demise of the First and Second Republics." "My intervention concerns the country's future, since what is good for the goose is good for the gander." Stop being a bystander; you can engage in political activities as well.
