a typical example of taking from Peter and giving to Paul, why not fine offenders?

The cars were auctioned after not being retrieved by the owners owing to not paying the fines levied and accrued demurrages.

Nigeria: Impunity, lawlessness and the warped justice system.

Quite on the contrary. This is accountability as opposed to impunity, and the rule of law as opposed to lawlessness.

Lagos needs to devise a method that

the Vehicle being Auctioned off are not

the only means of Survival of the owners

Lagos Govt needs to remember that in the West where Vehicles are Auctioned the owners can easily buy another Car after collecting his monthly Salary

Nigeria is not like that and Working Nigerians are not that rich

They may be unable to buy another car for 5 years

You can see how silent he was on whether anyone can escape punishment.

All this due process has only one bus stop. Na Prison.

Once you’re caught you’re going to jail and forfeiting your vehicle regardless of the presence of traffic signs or not. This draconian law needs to be amended especially for small roads without signs that one can mistakenly enter.

Lagos traffic law is designed to generate revenue. Law shouid have human face. Auctioning of vehicles have financial implications on the families of offenders . Economy is already in bad shape. Appropriate fines and community services are ok for all sort of traffic offences. No point in congesting already congested prisons. Hit and run is a criminal offense not a traffic offence. One way driving is a major traffic offence. Offenders shouid pay fine about of 30% of value of the vehicles with 3 months community services and admission in psychiatric hospital.

No problems but LASG should erect traffic signs boldly and clearly all over Lagos. Replace them when some unscrupulous police officers deliberately remove them to extort from innocent citizens. The idea should be to achieve road safety rather than to punish.

I believe the ruthless auction at this critical political time is a bold move. I hope motorists would learn from it and drive properly against every temptations to break the traffic laws. Believe me, the temptation can be strong sometimes due various reasons such as time management issues, condition of vehicle, etc
traffic sign on the express way, for example come to berger this days and see how soke vehicles are plying one way just because of traffic on d other side of the road due to road construction

You don’t drive (at least in Lagos) that’s why you’re talking rubbish.

Go to adams str in oworo. Half of the street is one way. You must either turn left or right at the last junction along the street else, you will be driving one way. And there is NO sign. A street starts as two way then ends up as one way and there’s no bloody sign to warn you.

Same thing Adeola Hopewell in VI, when you turn into the street from Sanusi Fafunwa. Suddenly you’d find yourself in one way situation. No warning. Then in Oworo also, there’s Oba Oloruntoyin way. No sign at the junction where Onabanjo streets branches off. You would have entered the street before knowing what’s up. Same with some streets in Lagos Island. You can never know cos no sign.

Why should a person go to jail and still forfeit his vehicle for that? When it’s not like he drove one way on the express.
