GeneralPula: The military cannot rule, because they're not trained to rule nations. They don't know how to govern, how to implement policies, how to cater to the masses. All they know how to do is direct regiments, prepare and prosecute conflicts...that's it. The military are their own problem. The last leader was disposed due to incompetence, which was predictable, given he was a former solider. And now you have another solider in office, who, in no time, will be disposed for the same reason. This problem will go on and on until one of two situations occurs, a civilian ruler comes in that is able to stabilise the country, or, like in the case of Nigeria, the country reaches the brink of total economic collapse. 1 Like 1 Share |

msrcusgarvey6: LOL The same issues and problems we have in our education , we had all of them under army rule. Free education, but you still had to buy your books and stuff? Schools that were government run were a mess...to the point that my parents had to do side hustle to send me to the better private school? ASUU was going on strike like several times ? Universites that were in a bad and awful state. Pensions? That my relative who retired then did not get paid regularly, and that people were still protesting for under army rule? That were even still very bad then? Intact transport system? That wrecked the railways that in 1964 constructed an extension of nearly 80 km all by itself, no foreign contractors...to a misreable wreck in 19992? Nigeria airways that crashed to pieces by 1999 under army rule. Salaries that were so poor, that ASUU was even joking by 1988 that their salaries could not take them home? Please, don't make me laugh. I lived under millitary rule. IT. DID. NOT. WORK. I lived under it. OIIf you like, be offended. I know what I saw.... 1 Like |

Any time an anti-western regime gets overthrown it is almost invariably sponsored by the West. Just watch and see what the new regime does next , my bet is that it would soon re-establish friendly relations with France, EU and US. |

] Realguyman1: I just used him as an example. In 1995, Saro wiwa, who called for nothing other than justice...was murdered by the millitary. Note, the guy did not call for secession or anything close to that. Then back to the topic. Bro I don't see anything different between the military government and the civilian government. I rather prefer the military to be ruling us, so that we will know that it is goverment ruling us against our own wishes than for we to use our own hand to elect one nonsense fellow to be ruling us anyhow and will even go as far as using the police, military and the dss to oppress us. That means you don't want development. You don;t want better government. You just want the army in charge because your side did not win elections. Face the truth. Me, I can say that civillan rule is awful, and I am just as angry as you are. But army rule was worse in many ways you won;t like. At least I can blast government here on this site. It won't have been possible under army rule. If they could close down newspapers arbitrialy for anti-government sedition ie plain criticism of government, why not this site? Work hard on your democracy. All those countries you admire....like UK, US, France...were all as backward and even corrupt (UP TO buying elections and suchforth) as Nigeria once upon a time. They worked hard and still work on their democracy...and that;s a big part of why they are developed. You were able to highlight out some point like how the military government met dollar at about #2 and lef it in about #90, but u forgot to highlight the point where the nonsense civilian government of now who met it at #90 have now make it close to about #1000. So we should bring back army because the naira depreciated ....at a slower rate.? Okay.. If you want the Naira to stop depreciating, then stop believeing that 2m barrels of oil a day can sustain a nation of 200 million people...then we can talk. By the way, dollar was nothing closed to #90 when the civilian government took over power in 1999. Dollar was between the range of #20 to #25 when the nonsense civilian government took over power then. So u see how the civilian government have dragged us back within just the space of 23years?[/quote] Official market. Parallel market...it was N85=90. And it may have been higher. And the two tier system was brought in to facilitate round tripping and looting. Also, our forex needs have balloned since the army left in part because of our growing population, and our need for more consumer electorinics, and imported fuel (thanks to army imposed subsides, we are importing fuel by the ton...because the subsides wrecked our refineries and added corruption and mess ). ...so the more forex we send out to import stuff...the worse our naira gets. |

benardtotti: Nigeria has never had a good leader; no one in the calibre of Peter Obi, that's for sure. So I disagree, I don't think people will turn on him. As long as he's working for the betterment of the country, people will back him. That's more than we can say for Buhari, who spends most of his time abroad, and when he is in the country, it's like he's in hiding. He's been in office for nearly 8 years, but hasn't implemented any new policies or programs to stimulate economic growth. The country has barely grown in the year's he's been in office. Poverty has increased, with more than 20+ million more people living below the poverty line. Nigeria now has more extreme poor than any other country on earth, that includes both India and China, two nations with a billion plus populations. Pulling people out of poverty isn't rocket science, China did it in no time. The difference is, they had actual seasoned politicians in power to do it. Nigeria on the other hand, has never had anyone in office that had the preparation, education and mental capacity to lift the nation forward....if Peter Obi comes to power, he'll be the first. |

benardtotti: Indeed....the subsidy removal is a big poisoned chalice...but it has to go. (Infact if GEJ had not removed subsides on kerosene, and diesel, by now we would have been paying a sum larger than our budget for subsides on those two things and petrol.). And let's be honest, if Obi wins, and in 4 years 'we are still suffering'...Nigerians will turn on him. That's because we think that we need a 'hero' as leader. No we don't. Government is people working hard to ensure that the right and realistic things are done at all levels. 1 Like |
