Tinubu, Dokpesi Settle N150 Billion Libel Suit Out Of Court

THE national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has agreed to accept the apology of the Chairman of DAAR Communications, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, and settle out of court with him in a libel suit he filed against Daar Communications Plc, owners of Africa Independent Television (AIT).

Tinubu took the decision to accept Dokpesi’s apology as settlement for the libelous documentary, “Lion of Bourdilon”, aired on Television (AIT) before a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja yesterday.

Tinubu had on March 1, 2015 instituted a N150 billion suit against Daar Communications Plc, owners of AIT, for airing the said documentary, alleging that it was aimed at tarnishing his image.

At the hearing of the matter yesterday, counsel to Dokpesi, Mike Ozekhome (SAN) told the court that his client wished to embrace Alternative Dispute Resolution.

“My lord, we have come to court today to embrace ADR. Every war that is fought is always settled amicably on a roundtable. Both parties have expressed their desire to settle amicably based on the terms of settlement which My Honourable Lord has been furnished with.

“We reached the agreement to enable both parties to continue with the good relationship that they have always had. We have driven the devil away with a spiritual Koboko,” Ozekhome told the court.
   
In his response, Tinubu’s counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) told court of his client’s willingness to settle out of court.

Olanipekun said: “I align myself with the submissions and sentiments of my learned friend. I can also confirm that the terms of settlement, which was drawn up on January 29, this year, has been accepted by both parties.

“I also want to appreciate my Lord for her patience all through the duration of the suit. I also appreciate the Claimant who magnanimously agreed to settle out of court.”
 
After listening to their submissions, the presiding judge, Justice Iyabo Akinkugbe in her ruling adopted the terms of settlement and acknowledged that it has been filed before the court and duly signed by both counsel.

The terms of agreement includes a retraction of the broadcast by AIT; an apology by AIT which should be aired three times, once daily on AIT; and that the Claimant and the Defendant shall bear their respective costs in the suit.

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka has launched the book entitled “Financialism:Water from an Empty Well” in Chicago, Illinois, United States with an advice to African leaders for a rethink of economic programmes, away from the ‘orthodox assumptions and givens under which their economies have taken a severe beating”. The rethinking as the professor of literature said becomes even more urgent with the collapse of the dominating economies of Europe and America.

The book launch took place Saturday 25 August, at the Rainbow Push Headquarters in Chicago , USA with Rev. Jesse Jackson as the host. The book was co-authored by former governor of Lagos state and national leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Brian Browne, former US consul general in Nigeria.

Soyinka launches the book, Financialism
Presenting the book to an audience consisting of two Nigerian governors, former American diplomats, civil rights leaders led by Rev. Jesse Jackson, Nigerian professionals from Chicago and around America and Canada, Nigerian lawmakers, council chairmen and youths, Soyinka warned that it is dangerous for leaders who were economic illiterates to insist that they are literate and end up placing their countries on the path of economic perdition. According to Soyinka one of such leaders ruled Nigeria for about 8 years recently and only succeeded in multiplying Nigeria’s economic woes.

“ I have no qualms declaring that I am not fully economic literate, that is why I leave it to the experts to figure out. I am not in the least embarrassed or ashamed to acknowledge myself an economic illiterate. This is quite unlike a former Head of State who was thus dubbed and never forgave his perceptive analyst, even after his death. That economist was my late friend, Professor Ojetunde Aboyade,” the only specialist, Soyinka said he relied upon for his economic insights.

Soyinka acknowledged the authors as key figures in the unfolding world where the book they have both written opens a new window in our understanding of how the world’s financial system is architectured to the disadvantage of some people.

“The skewed world of economics needs to be challenged, a world where the umbilical cord between produce and tally-card was slashed when no one was looking, and the latter has come to be a thing-in-itself, empowering a parasitic class of finance controllers who place the mere tally over and above the material goods – yet succeed in making the rest of the world fall in line! The collapse of the dominating economies of Europe and America is a call for re-thinking, away from orthodox assumptions and givens, under which satellite economies in a distant continent like ours have taken a severe beating, whether or not their governments choose to admit it”.

Rev. Jesse Jackson who moderated the book launching and signing said it was time both the African and African –American perspectives fuse into one because both are challenged by similar issues. He welcomed the fact that the exposition in the book raises fundamental issues and goes further to provide answers as to why Africans and African –Americans live under a discriminatory economic system.

Asiwaju Tinubu, who spoke earlier on, stated the rationale behind the writing of the book, which he located in the injustices of the present economic system and how the contradictions eventually caught up with the players who left the low level income earner and small businesses with the short end of the stick.” Productive capitalism relies on the discipline of the market place. What now occurs is that powerful actors exploit the license the market place affords them. In doing so, they endanger the very economies from which they unduly profit. In other words, they have emptied the well yet continue to seek to take water from it. These people practice a speculative brand of economics. My co-author and I have given this mutation of capitalism the name of “financialism.” Financialism is capitalism so shorn of all restraint that it cannibalizes itself”

Tinubu decried this wiping away of the earnings of this struggling segment of the society and explained why there must be a new thinking and approach on how to deal with this problem. According to Tinubu, “–Recurrent crises show that something is profoundly wrong with the global financial system. Unless we want to suffer these damaging jolts for the foreseeable future, we need to make systemic corrections. Both developed and emergent nations have committed the similar sin of turning what should be productive economies into factories of financial speculation that generate more financial paper than they do material products that real people can use to improve their living conditions”.

Tinubu gave an advice to Nigerian leaders: “Nigeria needs to be put to work. We have a lot of catching up to do. Asian governments support the industrialization of their economies. Wise European nations are starting to retool their industrial base. Nigeria cannot hope to achieve prosperity simply by exporting exhaustible natural resources. We must follow the historic route that all large nations have followed in reaching national prosperity. We must make, create and export what we make and create”.

Brian Browne, the co-author in his remarks argued that recession has put Black America into a structural recession. “The financial system has become over inflated to the point of killing the productive sector”.

Ambassador Howard Jeter who reviewed the book stated that the two perspectives from Africa and the United States offer an invaluable insight into the global financial structure and offers practical solutions and challenges what we know as impositions.

Governors Rauf Aregbesola and Abiola Ajimobi of Osun and Oyo states also lent their voices to the call for a more equitable global financial order.

We Have No Record Of Crime Against Tinubu – US Declares

LAGOS – The United States government has said, the All Progressive Congress (APC) Presidential candidate in the coming General elections in Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was neither involved nor convicted for criminal drug dealing in the US, falsifying reports amplified by his political opponents who are recycling an unsuccessful suit in which the former Lagos Governor was cleared of all charges.

The US offered the clarification while responding to a petition filed sometime, seeking details about the failed suit brought against Tinubu over unsubstantiated allegations of drug dealing and purported questionable financial transactions in the country.

In its response signed by Micheal H. Bonner, the Legal Officer of the Consulate Office in Nigeria, the US said “a records check of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) National Crime Information Centre (NCIC) was conducted” and “the results of the checks were negative for any criminal arrest records, wants, or warrants for Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

The response, which re-emphasized the acquittal of Tinubu of all charges by the court, poured cold water on the propagandist efforts of his political opponents who are portraying old court papers, which merely detailed the unfounded and never substantiated allegations, as new and recent facts.

According to a legal expert who described the situation as “a misleading attempt to bend the facts of a simple legal matter in order to gain a political advantage.

“Tinubu has committed no crime. He is not guilty of anything. That is the position of the law and the verdict of the court and other investigative bodies after examining the allegations.

“The suit papers some are bandying around are irrelevant because they said things that were never proven. It is nothing but an attempt to exploit the public’s ignorance of legal matters and dent the image of a political opponent”, he said.

It would be recalled that individuals and social media accounts re-circulating the dated and already publicly available documents of the suit bearing the unsubstantiated allegations revealed that they were all surrogates of the opposition parties challenging what many perceive to be Tinubu’s procession to the presidency based on his established popularity and broad acceptance.

Former Governor of Lagos State and national leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was yesterday given an award by the the National Conference of Black Mayors in America. The association held its 38th annual convention recently in Atlanta, Georgia.

He was presented with the association’s highest award, the President’s Award.

Vanessa Williams, the Executive Director of the National Conference of Black Mayors in America while presenting the award to him in Lagos said the choice of Tinubu was based on merit.

“We searched for Africans leaders who have made great impact in linking African-Americans with Africans towards positive development and you emerged as one of such”.

Venessa Williams, the daughter of the first black speaker of the state of Nevada revealed that the association had followed the stewardship of Asiwaju Tinubu in the areas of support for people in the Diaspora and African –American causes. “You have linked your international experience with national experience to chart a path for development for your people. You fit our bill of leaders who think locally, but act globally and we thank you”. Miss Williams made special mention of Asiwaju Tinubu’s knack for finding, developing and empowering a new generation of leaders at all levels of government.

Asiwaju Tinubu while receiving the President’s Award thanked the National Conference of Black Mayors of America for the recognition awarded him. “African-Americans and Nigerians are the same in their crusade to achieve freedom and liberty. We must work together to elevate our people. We share a common aspiration in the struggle to eradicate poverty and give hope to our people.”

Tinubu further added that Martin Luther King, a crusader extraordinary has shown us the way. He told Venessa Williams that he did not go into politics for want of anything except to give hope and elevate the standard of living of the people.

Identifying selfless leadership as a major pre-requisite for development, Tinubu said a new crop of leaders will be needed to bring about change. “In Lagos, we have a model for change and good governance. Massive infrastructural development that is being sustained and a rejenuvated Judiciary where women judges now play prominent roles. Lagos as had four successive State Chief Judges”. Tinubu revealed that he has gone beyond Nigeria to invest in the development and growth of other countries such as Ghana, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Gambia.

This is more of that. Arisetv is invoking a campaign of calmunies of him. They are acting like an opposition party, even more than that.

Not supporting someone is different, but trying very visible and seriously hard to bring the person down is another thing. And what goes around always end up coming back around.

Is Arisetv the only tv station? Why always them against Tinubu all the time. this is more personal than even beyond just journalism.


I think the treatment of AIT awaits them. They should study more about how irrelevant and useless AIT has been since they antagonised Buhari's election bid in 2015.
