Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, may embark on ‘no pay, no work’ policy if the Federal Government continues to insist on not paying them their withheld eight months salaries, the National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, has said.

Speaking in a chat with Vanguard on Wednesday, he said the union might embark on the policy which means another round of strike, since the FG has refused to pay their salaries.

Reminded that the National Industrial Court of Nigeria sitting in Abuja had in October ordered the union to go back to work before it could continue to entertain the matter before it, Osodeke retorted that the FG did not also wait for the final judgment of the court on the matter before deciding not to pay his members their withheld salaries.

“Yes, the matter still continues before the National Industrial Court of Nigeria in Abuja. The court has not given a final judgement on it. Remember that we were not the ones who dragged the government to court. It was the government that took us to court. The order that the court gave was that we should go back to our duty posts while the matter is being heard.

“As law abiding people, we obeyed the order of the court. Unfortunately, the FG that initiated the matter did not wait for the final decision of the court before starting the ‘no work, no pay’ issue. Even to a layman, when the court said go back and maintain the status quo, did it say that the government should be the judge on the matter? He said.

On the series of protests by members in branches over the half salary paid them in Octiber, the ASUU boss expressed satisfaction with the response of members.

We are going to hold our National Executive Council meeting to appraise the situation and look at reports from the branches. It was the NEC that mandated the branches to embark on the protests. Whatever is going to be the next line of action, we are going to decide at the NEC meeting, ” he stated.

Recall that ASUU called off its eight months strike on October 14 following the order of the NICN and when the month ended, the FG paid the lecturers 18-day salary which drew outrage from the union.

The union had thought the government would pay them full salary and also begin to pay the areears in tranches.

However, the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu and the Labour and Employment Minister, Senator Chris Ngige, said at different fora that the government did not do anything wrong by what it paid the lecturers.

They also noted that the government would stick to the ‘no work, no pay’ policy.

Moves by some concerned people to let the government pay the lecturers some palliatives or part of the eight months salaries are being frustrated by some people who feel that the punishment should serve as a deterrent to other unions.

Meanwhile, non-teaching staff in the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Allied Institutions, NASU, are also not yet paid five months’ withheld salaries.

They went on strike from March to August this year too.

Meanwhile, lecturers in federal universities were on Wednesday paid their November 2022 salaries in full, contrary to what happened the previous month when they got half salary.

However, the withheld eight months salaries were not paid by the government.

The action of the government is in line with its policy of not paying the workers for work not done.

ASUU should know they have lost public sympathy and public good will.

Masses hate them for going on 8-10 months strike every two years and demanding for salaries.

Buhari is their march. Pls strike again, your next salary will be used to fund 2023 elections.

Greedy idiots

I don’t recognise ASUU again

We should be hearing from CONUA, they are the progressives.

Junior lecturers should shun ASUU strikes and register with CONUA cos it is evident ASUU will waste more salaries.

Another Strike?. is that really wise?. Will the larger part of their union subscribe to it?. Well, all fingers crossed:

-First of all, ASUU and FG are irredeemable idiots

-But why is ASUU acting like they still have the dice.

- Who felt the miserable hand of the last and just concluded strike the most if not the students.

-Does the FG care that much about the masses, students to feel threatening by another strike since it is not affecting them, considering the last and just concluded fruitless strike

But It is surprising that ASUU still think they can intimidate their employer.

- You are not paaid for the months you went on strike and you think going for another strike will make them pay u. Isn't this shit contradictory.

-Well, ASUU agitation can be likened to when a house gecko is suddenly smashed with a stick but its body and the amputated tail went different ways. Whilst the body is dead, the tail is still shaking, moving and unrest, thinking it's still part of the living body. But we all know that it's already gone and the shaking is nothing but..... Justìmí

At the moment, ASUU is a house gecko. And their present gragra of threatening and turbulence won't solve anything.

To the ASUU extreme apologist that might quote or mention me, don't even bother because I won't answer you because I know most of you are dogmatic in reasoning. And guess what, your reasoning does not change or deduce the fact.
Justìmí.

For what exactly? Pay them for 8 months that they didn't work? Would you pay your worker if he didn't come to work for just 2 weeks?
