It's still cheap.

Education isn't meant to be cheap because awolowo free education policies can't stand in our present economic reality.

Most of this student were blaming ASUU when ASUU were fighting on their behalf.

The authorities of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka(UNN) today released a new school fees structure that cuts across all levels In the university. This came after a closed door meeting of the school authorities and the SUG of both campuses yesterday. While this is a means to catch up with the current economic downturn of the country, the students have expressed their distaste and refusal to be intimidated and coersed into daylight robbery and extortion.

That's the only way the school can survive, the government has neglected education

Meanwhile, the speaker of the Students legislative arm of the SUG have advised students to stay calm as they are working to see that the new development is in the interest of students.

Below are the New School fees structure for students.

Why not say the amount? wink If accommodation is increased from its current N90 to N180,it is 100% increase yet charging N180 for one year is outrightly ridiculous

You get what you pay for, that is why there are so many unemployed unemployable graduates roaming the streets. That is why graduates are drivers, sales girls and bank tellers

Any university charging less than 1m a year is only handicapping and wasting the time of 70-80% of its graduates . Most of them will end up unemployable. The 20-30% that will make it, will do so in spite of the system not because the university gave them a sound education.

Education is not free, somebody has to pay for quality education, if the govt can’t afford it (which they can’t). Then somebody must fund it or you won’t get good education. The fact that they give you a certificate does not mean it is worth anything or has any value in the job market if your employers know the quality of the education from the university that awarded the degree is worthless .

Nigerian govt education and universities were of good quality and free in the 60s-80s because there were not many universities or students. The govt could afford to provide free quality education. Today the population of universities and students has gone up astronomicallly and the funding has dwindled. In the 1970s the total population of all Nigerian universities was less than 100k, today it is more than 2million!!!! So when you hear that students collected bursaries and free meals, it’s because there weren’t many mouths to feed. By definition you are now getting less Naira invested per student. Every parent knows if your income is fixed, it is easier to send 1 child to the best school if you are only paying school fees once, but if you have 6 children some children (if not all) are going to suffer. Either some don’t go to school or they will all have to go to lesser quality schools…all will not be able to go to the best schools. It is no different for govt and citizens.

It only stands to reason the quality of the education you are receiving in your free universities has fallen and will continue to fall unless the funding is addressed!!! If you don’t want to pay the fees commensurate with good quality education….no problem. Just remember your contemporaries, at great discomfort to their families, are finding a way to pay 200 times what you are asked to pay to get quality degrees abroad. When they return and take all the jobs and the only jobs available for you if you are lucky are Uber driver and sales girls….don’t complain!!! You refused to pay for good education and you get what you pay for!!!

Hiking fee by 100 percent is the right thing to do with how the Naira has depreciated and how the government is treating lecturers badly.

If you can't afford it, quit school and use that little you have to invest in a lucrative business.

Most graduates in Nigeria are broke, but their friends who didn't go to school but focused on business or other investments are doing well financially and at last, they finally go to school at old age if they wish to because they have all the money to pay for anything without complaining.

Planning is key.

100% increment is just too much...and it's not as if standard of living, administration or lectures is going to change.

Oga let me tell you a big secret. 90% of the lecturers in Nigerian govt universities today are low quality and we’re not the brightest of their set. They teach because they couldn’t get the best jobs when they graduated and the best graduates of their generation did not go to universities to teach which created a a vacuum they were able to fill. Same thing with the civil service.

In any event, times have changed. There was a time when all you had to do was gain admission to a foreign university and you had a govt scholarship waiting for you.

I am telling you the reality of university education. You should be grateful they are trying to increase fees because it means they are trying to increase the quality of the education you are receiving!!!!

If you like protest, you will pay the price for cheap education when you graduate!!!!

Quality education is expensive. The government has to find a means of taking care of poor students as was done in the late 70s and early 80s.

Those who are going to raise thee quality of the universities will not be attracted to the universities that cannot afford to attract the best lecturers. You attract the best lecturers by having the best infrastructure, teaching facilities, research funding and remuneration. All of these need funding. Since govt cannot provide funding, the next logical step is tuition.

It's only in Nigeria govt fund universities. Government shouldn't be doing that. They can fund research. Education is very costly. In uk, universities get money to run their everyday affair through international students. Also provisions are made for students to get loan. So also usa. Education is very expensive. We have to accept this fact one day.

True! Then students must be ready to pay the price. You can't label the union fighting for funding as bad people then when natural course of fees hike due to poor funds takes its place, we protest again.

Our lecturers and professors from 1960-1980s were some of the best in the world….people like Nobel prize winning Wole Soyinka to name just one. These were lecturers not just trained at the best universities in the world but excelled at the best universities in the world.

From the late 1980s, early 1990s onwards the brightest stopped seeing our universities as a career path and went into the private sector or went abroad. It was the “b” or “c” grade students that became university lecturers…they are the ones who have now become professors…you can see the quality of our current crop of professors when you hear the current president of ASUU speak.

The reason why the best stayed away and continue to stay away is financial. Unless you raise the finances of govt universities, even the “b” and “c” grades will not be attracted. I am not even sure Govt universities can attract a. “B” grade lecturer today. Eventually all govt universities will be able to attract are the absolute dregs of lecturers, if we aren’t already at that stage. Point is to reverse the slide, Govt universities need to start being an attractive place for good lecturers, to do so fees must be raised.
