Your refusal to allow them control you selfishly hurts their "oversized ego" and the next option they latch onto is to show hate towards you.

Some of them will hate you openly, while some will do it secretly.

The latter are more dangerous, pray to God to deliver you from coded haters, who smile at you but secretly plan to destroy you.
