Bola Tinubu has claimed real estate inheritance as the source of his stupendous wealth in the latest version of his ever-changing narratives regarding how he came about the billions of dollars he is believed to be sitting on.

The All Progressives Congress presidential candidate for 2023 said he inherited a substantial real estate that grew even bigger following shrewd investing decisions, a claim that contradicted his previous interviews in which he cited bonuses from earnings as a mid-level official at Deloitte.

Mr Tinubu has also previously claimed he became wealthy following his retirement outlays as a senior treasurer with oil giant Mobil in the late 1980s.

But in an interview with the BBC that went live online Wednesday, the former Lagos governor said someone left him a vast real estate upon which he built an investment portfolio. He did not say who left the money. Mr Tinubu’s father was never known, and his foster mother, Abibatu Mogaji, only passed on in July 2013 at a modest house gifted to her by Mr Tinubu after he became governor in 1999.

“I inherited great real estate. I turned the value around. I’m not denying my wealth,” Mr Tinubu said in the interview posted on BBC Africa’s Facebook page.

Mr Tinubu, 70, slammed his critics as enemies of wealth for wondering how he was about to build a multibillion-dollar empire despite lacking any background as an industrialist or business executive.

“Are they enemies of wealth? If they are not enemies of wealth, investments do yield,” Mr Tinubu said.

The controversial presidential candidate has faced corruption allegations from Nigerians, and anti-graft agencies have been reluctant to look into his finances for fear of political backlash from a man close to incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari.

In 2020, Peoples Gazette published a series of financial documents that showed how Mr Tinubu was stealing to enrich himself via questionable tax administration in Lagos.

The newspaper also uncovered how Mr Tinubu, through tax consultants Alpha Beta, siphoned billions to shell companies and his known businesses like TVC and Lagos rapid transit schemes.

Mr Tinubu’s previous ties to drug trafficking businesses from the 1990s recently made headlines across Nigeria. The politician has continued to deny all wrongdoing, including charges of drugs and looting of Lagos’ treasury.

Next February, Mr Tinubu will square up against former vice president Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party’s presidential flagbearer Peter Obi, African Action Congress’s Omoyele Sowore and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP for Africa’s most populous country’s top job.

So many things contribute to give a man Wealth. At each occasion you won’t be mentioning all of them. You can only mention the ones you could remember at a given time.

We are not going to say that he inherited estates from his mother Habibat is a lie! And we are not going to say he didn’t make money while he was working at Deloitte and Mobil oil.

We will also not say he didn’t invest. It is evident in his way of turning Lagos fortune around within 8 years of his rule. All all things being equal

Lmao I laugh in different languages

1) As a senior treasurer at Mobil, what type of salary will make you a billionaire after retirement?

2) Tinubu's father is unknown, his foster mother (not his real mother) was gifted a modest home in 1999 by Tinubu when he was Governor of Lagos State, and she lived there till she died in 2013, that means she was very poor before Tinubu became the governor, so who did he inherit the so called real estate from?

This is one thing with liars, they will have to keep lying to defend the previous lies they lied, thereby making a fool of themselves, Tinubu is a perfect example of a chronic consistent daft liar.

When you tell a lie, you may have to tell a billion lies to cover that one lie.

This is Tinubu's case of telling lies

Every politician is corrupt. Effectively "stealing" why not in office is a mad strategy that should be studied.

Tinubu & Lagos state.
Between 1999 to 2007, the star governors then were Donald Duke of Cross River, Chimaroke Nnamani of Enugu, even though Ibori would be later jailed, he had more projects to himself than the so called Jagaban.

Ibori practically changed the face of his own town like what Oshiomhole and Ambode did to Iyahmo and Epe respectively. Then, Yaradua of Katsina and Markafi of Kaduna, although he struggled because of sharia and the Kaduna crisis which left a major dent on his administration.

Lagos was never celebrated in governance until Fashola became governor in 2007. I remember clearly the fight Tinubu had with Obasanjo about local government creation, that was the major reason Lagos was on the news then, apart for obvious reasons as Nigeria’s economic capital, there was nothing spectacular in Lagos governance then apart from the filths and dirts that littered the former pride of the nation.

There was nothing exciting about Tinubu’s leadership except his meticulous politics. He was a last man standing of the AD governors of the Southwest region then because Igbos helped him.

We still remember how Tinubu was changing his deputies like sidechicks. There was one Bucknor then and another Femi Pedro, they all fell out with Tinubu.

We remember clearly how Tinubu almost never wanted Fashola to complete his term but Fashola being a system man, managed to, unlike Ambode who, although being very good as a leader didn’t know how to manage power.

Tinubu, typical of most governors in his sets; 1999-2007, was mediocre like Lucky Igbinedion, Alams, Dariye etc. It is sad how people want to re-write history before our eyes.

How would someone attribute the Lagos success story to Tinubu, it is very painful to read that sometimes. Lagos was already Lagos before Tinubu was born. You can go and verify this.

You guys should show a mega project attributed to Tinubu. One he started and completed.

I belive the part he said he inherited vast real estate. The name Tinubu reigned supreme in d old Oyo empire in the 18th and 19th century.
He's also be known to be from the lineage of Efunroye Tinubu, the great slave merchant of d Lagos colony in d 19th century.

Most of lekki areas,I learned belong to Tinubu through inheritance. Now imagine inheriting the whole lekki. How will u not be wealthy?

Just like the Okeowos Inherited the ikoyi section of lagos.
