At such a young age, she’s the preeminent spokesperson for female education. Some adherents, though not as extreme as Malala’s would-be executioner, are more regressive than others. Some even see no contradiction in shooting a child in the name of their religious traditions. Tradition can be more powerful than scripture and even directly overrule it.

Does Islam forbid the education of women? For far too many Muslims, the traditional (not scriptural) answer is yes.
