wills: SCM/LOGISTICS

Hello People, I will like to use this tread to bring folks interested, or already practicing professional in the Area of Logistics and supply chain management, also professionals in allied functions like shipping, materials handling, inventory/stock management and Transportation planning, should please feel free to join us and share their expertise with us.

My Profile:
Currently I work in the(sales and receivables section) with a Major Logistics service company In the south of Nigeria and have  one year 3 months experiance, i have learnt and seen  how major firms, oil and gas, manufacturing etc  outsource their logistics Functions , control and operate their supply chain operations, both Locally  (Support base services) and Internationally (Terminal /port).

With a Higher National Diploma in Production Engr and a PGD in Transport Mgt and planning in View, I Now want to really build a career in Logistics and SCM and move from my present function into the main aspects of logistics and SCM.

Since Logistics and SCM is an emerging function in most Organizations and without Formal undergraduate or postgraduate courses run in these areas by local tertiary institutions, it’s hard to get training locally.
My search so far has only come up with some firms offering Training and short course in this area, ultimix Export Academy in Lagos ,The upcoming Phillips consulting LOD program in Principals of SCM, coming up I think some time in July 2006, DPSS, CIPS exam tutoring in october 2006 and The Nigeria Institute of transport technology/ultimix PGD programm in logistics and scmI am making serious search for the best place and at a reasonable cost where one can take short courses, training or postgraduate studies in logistics and SCM, my search so far shows that South Africa seems to be the likely destination for this training,, due to the relatively reduced cost to pursue this program there as compared to doing it in Europe, especially the UK and Netherlands. If any one has a better idea of where one can Build Up his career in Logistics and SCM locally or abroad, please share.

Another important aspect in the logistics and SCM business, is having a working knowledge of the most comely used ERP application software’s for Example SAP
(Logistics) and SCM, Modules. The Cost of learning this application here in Nigeria is over the roof top, that’s if u are an individual like myself yarning to take this courses. SAP training school in Nigeria is located in Abuja and Lagos

Currently I have working experience with Navision attain ERP and ARIBA spend mgt E-procurement application (Buyer interface).

I will also want to suggest that if anyone out there has an idea of where one can learn, JD Edward (inventory software) and other Hot ERP applications commonly used by big firms. To please lets us in on it.

I hope we can share ideas and build a very interesting and informative discuss on this and even much more.

I think project management works the same in SCM like other fields. More like start a project and see it to completion on an individual basis. Especially if the project is bigger than what a particular company is used to. It is usual to see a term called Project Logistics. This is more like using project management philosophies to execute the sourcing, transportation, warehousing and payment of a specific company assignment that has a limited time to execute.

That just my way of conceiving the relationship between the two

thanks for the response.
I am already pursuing a certification in project management (prince 2)
So I just wanted to know if they are intertwined.
I don't wanna end up acquiring a double certification. Where one would have been okay
But I certainly know that they are related, cos the knowledge gained from one could help in the other.
So is it advisable to go for both courses or just get certified in project management and study about the other just for the knowledge.
Thanks.

Just a pointer, either a university calls it purchasing and Supply Chain Management or Logistics and Supply Chain Management or Operations and Supply Chain Management, I want you to know Supply Chain Management is Supply Chain Management. All you need to worry about is the modules these various universities offer on the course. For instance, I studied international supply chain & logistics management, had finance as one of my core modules, but I enjoyed it because I have an accounting background. on the contrary, a lot of guys with engineering background struggled and had to change their courses to IT for supply chain management which was more inclined to what they did for BSc. Besides it was easy for them to change their course because we all did the same modules except for one or two. Don't get me wrong, the best guy in finance in my class was actually an engineer with BAE systems. Its all about understanding your capabilities so that you can come out tops. I did not have operations management as my course title, yet we ran two distinct operation management modules. In short, the modules is all that matters.

The modules I did were as follows:

Operations management, Strategic operations management, supply chain management, managing people & Organisation, Information management (quantitative data analysis & information systems), Logistics, strategic outsourcing, International logistics and finance for SCM.

these are my options,

I have just checked the modules are pretty much the same, and they both offer the SAP option i wanted i might be able to get away with doing more; if my previous module in undergraduate level [BEng Engineering and Business Management] can be considered, Accounting for Engineers

the fees for the exam is 14000 naira for early bird registration
for late entries its 15500 naira, membership for africans is 11500 naira.
so there you go

as for your second question, having the two certs is not a bad idea, project management and supply chain management are quite related , even in purchasing and supply certification offerred by CIPS there is module in level 6 that is called advance project management, at the end of the day both course talks about cost effective way to bring value to the customer in the form of product , service or process.

give it a shot, there is mad competition out there!!

It really gives me joy to find a tread like this on nairaland. Before now, I nurtured the feelings that I was alone (OYO) as I believed that my type of chosen career is such that is not known to many.
Firstly, let me start by saying that we now have institutions in Nigeria that now offer this progrm @ undergraduate level. LAUTECH as a matter of fact happen to be the first skool in naija to be offering this. Although not as Logistics Management or SCM but TMT. If u ask me, these 3 con note almost the same thing. Transportation is key in LM or SCM. As a graduate of TMT here in Nig, u automatically become a student member of CILT. & going for ur IAD in order to become a CMILT, u'll be given an exemption; meaning dat u'll only write IAD which I think is around 150k now.
I currently work with a logistics and procurement firm too. In fact, my firm represent one of the biggest freight forwarding firms in the world here in Nig. We are procurement expert. I'm seriously enjoying it just that they pay here isn't encouraging. I luv LM.

wills: Mike its Nice to see your reply and once more I must say it’s another Eye opener still, for me.
I Chose CIPS simply because I believe its certification will be a bit more acceptable in Nigeria as at Now, and what’s more the Body has reorganized the Need to change from The traditional functions within company’s, to conventional practice in SCM as a discipline and Modern sourcing function, starting from last month, CIPS has commenced a process to change in certification process, I believe all this is in a bid to become more relevant in the ever Dynamic profession of SCM.

APCIS (America based) certification in SCM, is not bad at all, but as at Now i don’t think they have a local arm of this body here in Nigeria and do conduct their professional exams here in Nigeria, that’s amongst the reason i had to settle for CIPS, since we now have CIPS approved Tutoring centers in Nigeria where one can study then take their Exams afterwards.
I still intend to find other bodies which will help one acquire knowledge and best practice, in all part of the supply chain. I am currently making enquiries at The Professional Society for Supply Chain Management South Africa, which i think is affiliated to (APCIS).

Thanks for the Link, I hope more people will join us to share their knowledge and information on how and where is best to keep developing once self in SCM and logistics.
Hi,
I'll like to write CIPS. I have B.Tech in Transport Mgt. Can u pls tell me all that it requires to be a chartered member. Thnks!

wills: You are most welcome Sir,

To share ideas, inspire each other and develop our knowledge, share information and more is what this tread is all about.

To your question since you are starting your studies for a first degree in International Business, I suggest you start at the Level 2 introductory certificate levels and build your way up the ladder, however since you are in the UK, there’s an alternative route to full membership, find out if the course of study you are about to undertake is an accredited degree, N/SVQ level 4 in Procurement or SCM.

Level 2 award?
It is designed to provide an overview for anyone who is interested in developing their knowledge of purchasing; those who are new to the purchasing function and those whose job role requires them to make limited purchasing decisions. It is likely that they will have little formal knowledge of or training in purchasing processes.

Level 2 is the first award on the CIPS ladder of qualifications so someone new to purchasing may use it as the first step on the ladder and continue upwards to the other Levels. However it can equally be a stand-alone qualification. Upon successful completion of the Level 2 Introductory Certificate, you will be awarded the grade of Certificate Member
Membership types to meet your educational and professional needs
Membership structure caters for different educational and professional needs, both of those working directly in purchasing and supply chain management and its associated disciplines, students and of those with an interest in the area.

The seven types of membership provide a clear structure that allows entry at an appropriate level, accurately reflecting your academic standards, vocational skill, experience and contribution to the profession.

CIPS Membership Grades --------Grade on completion

Level 7 Executive Diploma --------MCIPS
Level 6 Graduate Diploma(+3 years’ experience)-Full Member MCIPS
Level 5 Advanced Diploma ----------Associate Member
Level 4 Foundation Diploma ----------Diploma Member
International Advanced Certificate ---------Certificate Member
Level 3 Certificate ---------Certificate Member
International Certificate ---------Certificate Member
Level 2 Introductory Certificate ----------Certificate Member
Affiliate ----------Affiliate Member

1. Fellow (FCIPS) – awarded to existing Members (MCIPS) with a record of outstanding achievement and competence in purchasing and supply chain management.

2. Full Member (MCIPS) – Full Members are recognized internationally for their professional accomplishment. Most Members achieve MCIPS by completing the CIPS Graduate Diploma. However, alternative routes include the successful completion of an accredited degree, N/SVQ level 4 in Procurement or SCM, CIPS Corporate Award, or a CIPS Personal Development Plan.

3. Associate Member – Associate Member is the grade for people who are developing their careers, those who achieved the Level 5 Advanced Diploma or a CIPS Corporate Award Stage 1, or working towards MCIPS through the Personal Development Plan (PDP). Please note that although successful completion of a PDP awards Full Member status, it does not award the Graduate Diploma.

4. Diploma Members - Diploma Members have successfully completed the Level 4 Foundation Diploma or the International Advanced Certificate.

5. Student – Certificate Member Student memberships is the entry level for new practitioners at the earliest stage of their professional development and are undertaking CIPS qualifications or their equivalent. Students have full access to CIPS benefits at a reduced subscription rate during their course of study, Level 3 certificate
Level 2 introductory certificate, International certificate

6. Affiliates – this grade is designed for individuals who do not wish to become professionally qualified but have a strong interest in purchasing and supply. There are no entry qualifications for affiliate membership.

NOTE
To join any of the qualification programmes offered by CIPS you must first register as a member. A registration fee is payable together with an annual subscription to maintain your registration and to give you access to the examinations.

Hope this information helps, leave a post on the tread is you need further clearifications.

I have B Tech in Transport Mgt. from LAUTECH and av been with this procurement and logistics firm for over 2yrs. Kindly advice where I'm like to start from and also advice the costing for the respective stage e.g registration, annual subscription and even exam fees. Thnks.

@Okey/ All else,

I'm currently studying Purchasing and Supply Chain Management at the Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen and My first degree was in Geology. During an International Recruitment event held on the campus, I met the HR representatives of Transocean and they said they particularly came here to recruit Nigerian graduates looking to come back and work in Nigeria. She mentioned something about ART(Accelerated Rig Trainee) program for 3 yrs if one is successful with their recruitment process.

My question is how is the Career progression like after the ART program? Is there a clear path forward? Also is it worth it? I have been trying to get like insider info on how Transocean is in Nigeria and if it is worth pursuing full throttle.I just want to make sure I am not in anyway selling myself short with a decision to work for transocean because I heard some work may not require college degrees and all that...

Donxavier: @Okey/ All else,

I'm currently studying Purchasing and Supply Chain Management at the Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen and My first degree was in Geology. During an International Recruitment event held on the campus, I met the HR representatives of Transocean and they said they particularly came here to recruit Nigerian graduates looking to come back and work in Nigeria. She mentioned something about ART(Accelerated Rig Trainee) program for 3 yrs if one is successful with their recruitment process.

My question is how is the Career progression like after the ART program? Is there a clear path forward? Also is it worth it? guy na wa for you sha, you met the hr ONE ON ONE , YOU would have ask him/her all these question , the HR is in a better position to give you concise straight to the point answers, go to transocean's website and read about them, they are the second largest drilling company in the world, with over 200+ rigs scattered all over the world, dem no dey look for work, na where to spend money dem dey look for,you should consider yourself lucky, grab the job offer with both hands before, they blink twice, here in Nigeria the ART program is a rigorious and stressful ordeal of doing series of test and interviews just to screen of some candidates off!, but abroad , i doubt if applicants will be made to write test, because most foreigners will not come to naija waters to get kidnapped by angry militants/oil bunkerers, sending a nigerian graduate from abroad to nigeria is cost effective for them , you are going back home to your country, no work permit , no relocation expenses,so make up your mind.

Hmmn thanks, I was thinking of asking her oh, I just thought it would make me look stupid and appear unprepared and unfit as a potential candidate. I also thought asking those questions may expose my ignorance of the company plus I didn't think asking about salary and all that was very nice. Guess I fluffed that chance. It was particularly interesting, cause she said she flew here basically for that purpose....Anyway thanks very much.... Na to hold am well with Fasting and Prayer grin grin grin...Thanks again

Hi Yall,
This is an interesting thread. I'm currently pursuing a MS in Supply Chain & Logistics Technology in the US. Its nice that we can share ideas on how to improve logistics in Nigeria irrespective of lack of adequate infrastructure.

Am just too happy seeing this topic been discussed with mature mind people with great professional techniques. Am an HND holder in Purchasing and Supply and also a Member of chartered Institute of purchasing and supply Management of Nigeria (CIPSMN). We have Alhaji Mohammed J. Aliyu as the Institute president, infact I was so honoured when I heard about the way the Man has been able to transform the Institute in recent years in line with procurement Act.

The Institute is now been participated by the Military, Nigerian Army of Logistics, (NACOL), Nigerian port Authority just to let u know the value of procurement functions.. So with my own little knowledge, I advice anyone in management field or any other relevant field to attache this professional course to His/Her belt cos it will go a long way. Thank you

Why does your MS have Technology? How is it different if it were Supply Chain Management or Engineering?

Would you want to enlighten me?
