The 'spy balloon' approached the North American mainland/hinterland from the pacific ocean direction. They had plenty oppurtunity to shoot it down over the Pacific Ocean before it flew over North American mainland. From comments I've read, I'm 100% certain a good number of Nairalanders do not know where China or the US is located on the world map.

You missed the point.
I won't debate with you on if they actually detected the 'spy balloon'. That's what they told you and that's what you'll believe.
The point is, both flying objects approached from the Pacific Ocean. If they were able to shoot this new flying object before getting to the US mainland, they should have been able to shoot down the 'spy balloon' before it got to the US mainland.
Don't mention me if you want to say nonsense. Nigerians are disappointing some times.

Why were they unable to detect and shoot this aforementioned 'spy balloon' before it got to the US mainland/hinterland but they're able to detect this new 'flying object' that approached from the same Pacific Ocean direction.
