Lagos - first a Portuguese trading post for slave, invaded by the British abolitionist military who sacked the native chief to establish a thriving trading outpost in 1892. Eventually, by 1897 - Lagos became the most important trading center in Africa and more profitable for the British than India. Hence, the origin of Lagos has always been about trading and taxes.
