The Lagos State Government has noted the hardship sparked by the Naira redesign policy, which has affected business and commercial activities.

There is no reason to reject the old notes, going by the Supreme Court judgement delivered on March 3, 2023.

The apex court declared that “no reasonable notice was given as required by Section 20(3) of the CBN Act,” noting that the public only became aware of the policy through press remarks, which cannot qualify as a notice to the public.

The court maintained that the policy has impeded the functions of State governments, pointing out that the directive that stops the use of the old notes is illegal, unconstitutional, null and void.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has, therefore, called on business owners, especially retailers, to accept the old N500 and N1,000 notes - in line with the Supreme Court judgement that the currency remains legal tender until December 31, 2023. It is illegal to reject the notes.

All agencies of the Lagos State Government are advised not to reject payments made with the old currency by the public.

Problem is Sanwo-olu will not go from market to market, bus to bus, shop to shop, hawker to hawker to force people to accept old note. People rely more on directives from Mr. President and the CBN Governor in a matter like this. If not because the country is upsidedown, the Supreme Court's pronouncement ought to be sufficient. But the Supreme Courts justices have turned themselves to skit makers making them to lose the respect. From Imo Governor to Akpabio to Lawan dey just dey play, dey play

Hmmm.....and it seems Buhari and Emefiele has left this country. Their inability to issue statement over this whole thing is something else. That's why all this cone headed governors kept on dishing out directive here and there.

i think this is the main issue, people are scared. i think what should happen is for state governors to use executive powers and mandate any bank that wants to continue doing business in their respective states to start collecting and paying the old notes, unless banks start collecting it , the ordinary people on the streets won't collect it

With Nigeria's Federalism all state governors have the power to individually execute the supreme court judgement within its territory without waiting for announcement from the central government.

It becomes a breach if central government interferes with such execution.

The governors have no power over any bank.
