These Houses Were Built With MUD. Why Do We Waste Money On Cement? by Napata77: 2:37am On Mar 26, 2023 |
This modern mud house is smart and eco-friendly. Not one single grain of cement was used in building this house. Just clay. https://www.onmanorama.com/lifestyle/decor/2022/07/19/modern-mud-house-tvpm-eco-friendly.html Mud brick House https://www.mymudbrick.com.au/ Mud House. https://www.realestate.com.au/news/before-and-after-wheatsheaf-mud-bricks-amazing-transformation/ .... So WHY do we waste money on expensive cement? You cannot tell me cement buildings lasts longer than mud buildings. The Kano Wall is over 1,200 years old, as is the Benin wall, and they are still standing today! You have guys sitting in the village moaning that they can't afford to build a house, citing the high cost of cement. Yet they are surrounded by CLAY which they can use to erect these fabulous buildings virtually for free! What is going on with us for goodness sakes in this country? 23 Likes 5 Shares |

burp18: If you don't know how to make it, ask the elders nau! They know! They know how to reinforce the clay. It's because you've all abandoned your history and are only looking at OYINBO to show you everything. We have the ancient knowledge of building any type of clay building. Do you know Benin City had multi-storeyed buildings and monuments SINCE THE 1500s, right till it was destroyed by the British in 1897? They used mud bricks. 40 Likes 6 Shares |

burp18: The ONLY reason they are more expensive is because very few people are making them. If we set up huge clay processing plants as big as those cement factories we have, the eventual cost will be less than 20% the current cost of cement, guaranteed! 36 Likes 5 Shares |

Clays are good material for building, but must pass through some processing which aren't available due to lack of technical know how. However cement are involve during the interlocking too 1 Like |

MightyHand: Which lack of technical know-how? Abeg talk another thing. Who have you asked? Because there is no white man or white textbook around to teach you, you think you don't know. Go to BENIN and ask them how to reinforce clay for buildings.. THEY'VE DONE IT FOR OVER 1,000 YEARS, AND RETAIN THE KNOWLEDGE. Same as Kano. You have clay residential houses in Kano that have stood for several hundreds of years. And you say you have no technical knowledge of what? We had indigenous technology before colonialism. RESEARCH IT AND USE IT. Dem no take oyinbo swear for una. 20 Likes 1 Share |

Napata77:there's not much significant difference in the pricing because bricks made from clay undergo a couple of processes. Plus they are usually smaller in size when compared with the ones made from cement. 1 Like 1 Share |

Napata77:unlike the ones made from clay, bricks made from clay are baked or put in furnaces to under go some heat. This is ater it must hae been carefully sorted ad impurities removed from it. People who do it locally add grasses to it whilst mixing as it helps strengthens and hold it together 7 Likes 1 Share |

burp18: The point is that we have the red clay all around us. If we can democratize the knowledge of those processes in a way that ordinary folks can simply access the clay around them and implement the processing, it will be a radical shift, and will be seriously empowering for those who want to build. 1 Like |

burp18: Thank you very much. And yet, somebody said we don't have technical know-how. For our own clay again! If you don't have technical know-how for your own red soil, what will you have technical know-how for? We are sitting on gold with this red clay of ours, yet we're looking for cement and other nonsense. Why? 1 Like 1 Share |

The Vice-President of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), Mr Olayemi Shonubi Urges FG to Encourage Research into the Modernisation of Mud Houses in the Country. Tuesday, January 22, 2019 Shonubi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that mud could be molded into bricks for the building of modern houses. The NIQS chief suggested that brick-blocks could be designed into inter-locking shape, so that there would be no need for cement to bind the bricks. According to him, the country has enough mud and other materials that can be used in building construction, adding that such material will be sourced locally at affordable cost. He said that if government leverages on such initiative, the cost of housing in Nigeria would reduce. “Mud houses are cheaper to construct; as a result, it can be produced in large quantity because mass house production is what the country needs, to be out of the housing deficit. “There is virtually no component used in the construction of the building that cannot be sourced within the country,” he said. Shonubi said there was need to expand the capacities of the industries involved in the production of local building materials from sources like bricks, clay, concrete products, and timbers among others. According to him, houses constructed with mud and other indigenous building materials are more economical, durable, better and easier to maintain compared to the ones built with cement and imported materials. “With mud houses, there is no need for extra expenses to install air-conditioner because during heat period, mud houses are constantly cool. “While a cemented block house generates heat particularly during the dry season, a mud house is conducive all-round the year,” he said. https://www.environewsnigeria.com/quantity-surveyor-seeks-modernised-mud-houses/ 3 Likes 1 Share |

Napata77:the funny thing is, you'd be seen as weird or trying to cut cost for using clay bricks to build. Houses built from clay bricks are actually stronger and more durable than the ones made from normal bricks 3 Likes 1 Share |

burp18: Absolutely! But the thing is, if you are the type who cares what others think, and want to hide the fact that it is a mud-built house, you can simply paint it white or something after you complete the house. Nobody will know, except those that visited the site when it was under construction. But personally, when I build my mud house, I will tell everyone I used 100% CLAY. I will even use it to trend, with an exotic design for the house. |
