I'm not in the cyber security space so I don't have direct references. But in my vertical, I've found a lot of good communities on Reddit. Maybe you can also be lucky there.

Regarding lower hanging fruits, compare webdev and cyber security. To start developing a website you probably just need notepad. I remember briefly dabbling into cyber security with Kali. You'd need a sufficiently powerful computer to virtualize Kali for example. Let's not talk about needing a capable wifi card to attempt to do Wi-Fi sniffing. I stumbled across Maltego a few days ago and deployed it to get my hands dirty with OSINT. The learning curve is a bit high and returns are not immediate. Contrast that with a webdev were a learner can immediately see whatever web page they have developed

Maltego (and if you add info from other means) will give you enough info to carry out a social engineering attack. Which from experience is madly effective

Maltego is mad though. Been playing with it mostly for fun and learning and it's crazy the insights you get. Maltego and Michael Bazzel's book and podcast have been my "play things" lately

I downloaded the 8th edition of Bazzel’s book last year, still haven’t gotten around to reading it. I will check out Maltego and see what it has to offer.

I used to SE for fun, but man no really too get time for fun again.
