Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has called for strong consensus among elites, urging the implementation of a policy framework that will promote social cohesion and unity in Nigeria.

Regarding the settlers-indigenes dichotomy, the vice-president called for replacing the certificate of indigenes with a certificate of residence or birth, insisting that such a move would promote cohesion.

Mr Osinbajo also called for a stronger and more equitable justice system that will treat all Nigerians equally, regardless of tribal, religious or ethnic affiliations.

The vice-president also called on the media to de-emphasise issues that promote ethnic and religious profiling and urged them to report news that would unite Nigerians.

Mr Osinbajo made the call on Monday at the maiden ‘Policy Making and Good Governance Lecture Series’ organised by the National Institute for Policy Strategic Studies (NIPPS).

The vice-president, in his lecture, ‘Creating a Homeland for All: A Nation Building in a Diverse Democracy’, decried the rising spate of divisiveness, which according to him, was responsible for Nigeria’s backwardness.

He maintained that “our diversity ought to be a blessing and not a curse,” adding that Nigeria has the potential to be a great nation.

Mr Osinbajo, who cited examples of Singapore, Tanzania and Rwanda as nations that effectively managed their diversities, said Nigeria could take a cue from them.

”Most heterogeneous nations have been able to manage and harness their diversities for the good of all and we can also do same in Nigeria. Our diversity in Nigeria should not be a burden. In fact, it is a blessing, and so we must develop the capacity to manage this diversity for the growth of our nation,” Mr Osinbajo stated.

He added, “So, elites must come together and agree to end the ethnic and religious profiling that we are currently facing in our dear nation. We must prioritise things that bind us together and deprioritise ones that set us apart.”

Mr Osinbajo believes that “the political class and the nation’s leadership can do more in developing policies, laws and the enforcing them toward addressing the weaponisation of ethnicity and religion in our dear nation.”

Politicians and lies and deceit (5 & 6)

Even Buhari promised to change state of origin to “state of residence” in 2011 when he was running for office against GEJ. He has been president for 8 years with APC lawmakers, what stopped him?

The President should pass an executive order compelling change state of origin to state of residence?

It's a good development I don tire with tribal war.
If you are from enugu born in Info state, your state should be Info state while your tribe should be Igbo.
Like we have black Americans, they are Americans by nationality but African by root.

This policy only benefits Ibos. No ethnic group in Nigeria live outside their tribal homelands more than the Ibos. Such a policy needs to be put on hold for now

Nigerians still practice a very primitive system of identification. In western countries, you can run for office at any location you live, as long as you are a citizen. No one cares where your grand parents came from.

Don't mind the real mumu who doesn't know that citizenship is more dependent on resident than origin.

Am I supposed to be more at home in the city where my great grandfather's were born or in the city where I was born, bred and educated up until adulthood?

Politicians just sensationalise those things to keep people backward.

The regions no longer exist and besides, they only favour the 3 dominant ethnic groups in the country. Why aren't you satisfied with your state of origin? why do you want to make claims on another man's land?

You can be at home anywhere. Just don't dream of taking up a state of origin other than that of your ancestors

We are not Westerns...we always say Western countries...why not imitate Japan, UAE, and other working economies....why Africa will never move forward is allowing Babel to be created in the first place though the partitioning of Africa.

I strongly disagree with such move.. in a country of over 250 tribes where we have some ones fond of roaming about the entire country to go and settle and drag ownership rights with indigenes they meet there, this is a very terrible idea.
It will only breed chaos, ethnic clashes and violent bloodbaths.. a case study is Benue state and the many ethnic-laced killings going on there.

The VP should be campaigning for ethnic groups to go back home and develop their regions and turn them to industrial hubs using the federal allocations going to their states plus IGR.. not this 'certificate of residence' please.

Is there a rule against running for a political post you're not from? I don't believe any state has laws on the book but correct me if I'm wrong.

Mumu politician.

Why did you abandon your residential polling unit in VGC that you could not deliver for your own re-election, to suddenly go register in Ikenne-Remo Ogun State that is your origin and easy to deliver?

That you will now come out to canvass for residential identity instead of indigenous identity, shows that you are a clown who did not learn from the disgrace you suffered at your former VGC polling unit.
